Apparently Sony not content with just dropping Backwards Compatibility is now dropping Linux support with todays update.

Source: http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/playstation-3-updates-will-drop-linux-capability/
Playstation blog: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/

The update is claimed to be optional but if you do not update your PS3 you will not be able to access the PSN, playing newer Bluray movies or play games online OR play games that require the updatewhich kind of makes it mandatory in my eyes. The Playstation store recently has gotten quite good and Sony happens to have some incredible titles out there so yes I'd say this update is mandatory if you want to keep playing games on it.

Now I'm not a linux user but the option was neat, I have it on my PS3 and used it here and there early on when I had PC trouble. And it really did make the PS3 more than just a console, you could do a lot more with it. Now as I gather I have to back up all my data, and then format my system, also I have to install ALL those games I had installed which WILL take hours to do. Which is of course my problem because I let my friend install linux on my system.

They apparently are removing the feature to increase security on the PS3, but this is also stripping down yet another feature on a console they say "Does everything". While I do love my PS3 games, I hate what Sony is doing to a console that I spent 600 dollars on when it came out. If this console fails (as in breaks) I'll be stuck plugging in my PSOne and PS2 and hope they last enough since they have disc drives and they fail unlike a cartridge slot. But maybe this will help security, and truly help sony, but this is will merely delay them and we all know it, if a pirate wants to crack something, they WILL get it eventually. I hope they'll retract this idea because honestly the PS3 is a very capable system that does a lot and should be allowed to do so.

What are your thoughts Escapists on the another feature stripped off the PS3?

Edit:
1- No this isn't an April Fools day thing, I of course thought of this as I recalled what day it was.
2- No I don't use the Linux feature (anymore) but it's annoying to lose a feature that some may use, no?
3- Because everyone seems to be taking EVERYDAY far too literally, I changed the title.

Added bit:
While this feature doesn't remove something that many people used or is necessary to enjoy your PS3 it is a bit disappointing to see another function taken out. This apparently is something many don't care about I'm just being a pessimist and hoping it doesn't lead to more being removed to take away from my, and others enjoyment of the PS3. In either case my only worry personally comes down to if my system dies/breaks what choices I'll have when it comes down to replacing it.

===============================
Important: If you have linux installed you might want to read this:

The PS3 update will not delete the linux install, only shut off the partition so effectively you'll lose the space linux is taking up so you'll have to back up your system and format it so you can erase linux.

To back it up you'll need a FAT32 formatted drive (as NTFS is a Microsoft thing) and if you don't you'll have to figure something else out to do. So if you care about the space it takes up (I forget how much mine even takes up) You'll have to go through the ropes.

Use this if you only want to back up your game saves:

Honestly I don't think anyone took advantage or cared what OS was on their PS3. I surely don't care.

I know that the people who do use this feature like it a LOT. Sure, not many people use it (I don't) but I still am slightly disappointed.

But...the OP says they had Linux on their PS3, so obviously at least one person took advantage of it and cared what was on their PS3.

Did you even read the OP?

I never used it and I don't really give a shit?

You're acting as if they took a vital part of your console away, which they didn't.
I'm unhappy they are stripping features from the PS3 one by one, I haven't used linux in ages but if I have to back up all my data to remove the OS and then put it back onto my console that will take a long time and I have better things to do with my PS3, like play God of War 3

I don't care about the Linux feature, I care that it's yet another feature they're removing. And honestly I think you should too, not about Linux again, but the feature removal. First it was backwards compatiblity a feature A LOT of people used, and now it's this? I wonder if we'll be able to watch Bluray movies still if someone finds a hack that lets you play copied games via playing Spiderman 3?

My point is Piracy will always find a way, so stripping a feature that people may have used a lot for something you can only delay is a bit unfair to people who bought the unit.

They removed that feature from NEWER units, if your system did it, it still does it now.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I'm hoping Sony bring back the first gen PS3s, the ones with everything.

Why would they take away backwards compatability? It's like making a new GPU then making it compatable only for the games that were designed with it specifically.

As far as i'm aware it won't be mandatory to still go online. I think whoever wrote the linked article has assumed that since earlier updates were required to go online this one will be too.

If it has been stated that it's optional, it must well be because all anouncements concerning firmware updates in the past have pretty much said that they were required. Besides the firmware updates are how they get the new features on the console in the first place. I could be wrong of course.

As for PS2 compatibility that was only available on the original 60GB consoles

EDIT: Losing features every day? REALLY? 2 in 3 years? Or is there over a thousand I missed?

EDIT2: Also the SD card readers & 2 USB's. Again they were only on the 60's but I'd still like you to list the thousand I've missed

If you want to be rude and hypocrite about what you're saying then here a full list of things they pulled out of the PS3

Card Readers
2 USB ports
Backwards Compatibility
Choice to decide on a model that has Backwards Compatibility
Linux

Yes I think they are stripping out a lot of features and for a console that's a lot of things they removed.

Do you even read what's in the topic? Or what you post? Or know how rude you are? I said I don't care about the removal Linux but that they're stripping features off the PS3. So read that and honk honk find another topic to be rude to :)

It is, it's written on the official playstation Blog apparently.

PlayStation Network, play online games, and access media servers. Additionally, videos, games, and Blu-rays that require the new update will be rendered unplayable to users of other operating systems.

Yup I was wrong. I don't see it as a big deal though, it has been said that hardly anyone uses it which you also admitted to. Also before you respond check the edits to my first post

Or maybe you could just stop being such a cry baby?

They took out Linux, something they put in for FREE as an update years ago, and you're getting all pissy about it, even though you never used it?

The features they have "stripped off everyday" aren't vital ones. You don't need to play Ps2 games on a PS3, you don't need 4 USB ports and you don't need Linux.

Do any of those features keep you from playing your PS3 games? No, so get over it. And try coming up with actual responses instead of flaming others.
Again, It's a discussion. I don't like that they're removing features, and if you don't care then that's fan-dabby-tastic for you because that's your right. However if you're not going to discuss anything then why are you here? I've flamed no one and have given geniune information and you're just blatently calling me an idiot for my opinion. I dislike they're removing features from PS3, if that's something you don't like then oh well it's my opinion.

So whatever man either take a step back and cool off or keep going and get yourself in trouble. Because I don't really care what you have to say because you're just text on a page to me. :)

I'll say it again, I meant the title as an exaggeration, it HAS lost a lot of features and that's sad to see ya know?

I use the readers a lot because I have a camera and such, I think it was on the 120GB model or whatever was above the 60 at some point...not sure.

And to state it again, I know linux isn't a big deal, it's just they've removed a lot of features and honestly I was just posting what I found and I thought maybe someone might find that this is big news to them. If it's not news to anyone and they don't care then just say so haha. Am I really upset? No, but it bugs me that they're removing stuff from the PS3.

The Backwards compatibility is what really made me mad because if my system breaks I have lost that option. So, again it's just more about a stack of features being lost rather than just linux.

In the long run, Linux is useless to me because I have a working PC, but I just hope they're out of things they're pruning off the system, because I liked that the PS3 DID truly do everything. Well, mine still does anyway.

Sure it may not have been too popular, but if it was already there, what the hell is the point in TAKING AWAY A FEATURE?
