PlayStation 3 Firmware Update Causes Problems

Sony's most recent mandatory firmware update has crippled a number of consoles.

Late last month, The Escapist <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99499-Sony-Removes-Other-OS-Option-for-PS3>reported that Sony was releasing a mandatory firmware update that would disable the option to install an alternate OS, in addition to increasing the system's security. That update was released on April 1, and is now causing problems for many PS3 owners.

Users have been reporting issues on the official PlayStation forums ranging from blank screens when the console is switched on to disk read errors to locked PSN accounts to the inability to even power up at all. These problems are not all-encompassing - many PlayStation 3 owners will experience no difficulties at all, but they are prevalent enough within the community to warrant a <a href=http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Updates/Users-with-3-21-technical-problems/td-p/45470549>15-page thread on the issue.

This is not the first time a Sony firmware update has caused issues. Last September, their firmware update caused problems with logging into PSN and accessing trophies for some players. As with the last update, Sony will likely try to push out a fix as soon as possible, but for some PlayStation 3 owners, there may be a bit of a wait before they can use their console again.

Thank god I've been attached to a certain free online computer game else I'd be pretty pissed off...again. I love me PS3 and everything about it but it just seems that every other update from Sony tends to kill it, the previous firmware issue apparently couldn't be fixed with an update for mine so they had me send it it...about the same time I had a new game and a week off from work...GRR

I haven't had any of those problems so far *touch wood*, but it did crash after installing the update, and I've been having wireless issues. this happens all the time so I don't think its related. Hopefully they'll release another update soon with some new features.

Meh. Don't get your panties in a bunch people. Knowing Sony, they'll pull out a quick fix for this.

Again, I blame hackers for making the OS feature such a risky thing.

Not to mention to remove the Other OS you have to back up your system data to a HDD (Fat 32 only not NTFS) then format your PS3. And if you DON'T do this, you're left with the other OS taking up space you cannot access because the update does not remove this.

I got the update, everything is dandy for me

My old faithful release 60GB PS3 has yet to fail me. 3 years and counting since the PS3 was released?

Oh come on, this is getting a little silly.

This is what, the third update that's crippled (some) people's machines? And then they couldn't program the clock right?

Hopefully this'll be the last of it - because if I ever get a PS3 to play Uncharted 2 I will beat the head of Sony down with a stick if my machine is crippled.

Thank God I haven't connected. And I won't until I complete FFXIII. I won't let it do any harm to my save files. I'm 20 hours into this ***** and I won't lose all that work now.

Are you gonna keep up that Calumon thing for ever? (I do actually hope so, your posts make me laugh)

I updated my PS3 slim to 3.21 and haven't noticed any issues. Obvious the lack of linux functionality is a moot point for me because the console couldn't do that in the first place. I did notice that the update process itself took quite a bit of time, but that could just be my internet connection being slow. The console has been on literally 100% of the time- I donate to Folding@home and haven't noticed any problems.

You know, I've been thinking about finally taking the plunge and getting a PS3, and every time I get ready to buy one, I hear about something Sony does to wreck them and it puts me off for another month or so...
