Yea all none IBM computes should be made illegal. Right? oh or do you not get that all none IBM's are knock off PC's and your argument is full of holes.
And I think you mean non, not none. They mean totally different things.

So, ummm, your sentence is full of holes.

This was a funny story. I hope they get taken to court.

Honestly, is no one capable of reading? They're not saying "Hey don't pirate our pirating device", they're saying "Hey you should get the device from us so that we can help you if you need something"
They're just looking out for their customers.

So, wait. They made something that opens the door to piracy on the console, and are now worried about pirated knock-offs of their creation. I can't tell if that's ironic or just sad. Though to be fair, if I was Sony, my first response to things like this would be to poison the well and flood the marketplace with USB dongles with programs designed to brick any PS3 they're used on. An idea that probably isn't too far off base from what some folks might try and do anyway for the, as the kids say, lulz. Hence why they would want to warn people against unofficial versions of their unofficial dongle accessory.

Why does everyone associate digital lock circumvention with piracy? I would buy this specifically so I could continue using my ps3 until after everyone else has had a chance to try out the new "patch".
Beyond that, so long as there is a chance for it to be used for "legitimate" purposes, it cannot be criminalized. That would be unethical.

On a side note about DRM circumvention, there's a claim that consumers are purchasing a "license" and not a product, and that this is so because it says this in the EULA, both on the software and in the manual.
This is also funny, because it is illegal to hold someone to a contract without prior agreement from both parties. Since the EULA is read AFTER the purchase, the consumer is then free to lie to his/her property.

I give it 1 week before Sony releases a firmware update limiting transfer rates from usb ports and non installed areas of the internal drive, killing the device for anyone who updates and killing online for anyone who doesn't.

It's major purpose is legal. Just because you think everyone who owns a device such as this is a pirate, that's your problem. Consumers should always be protected from illegitimate stuff. Your computer could be used to emulate or download roms, should you be sold a knock off PC?
Unless I missed something, it's major purpose is to make backups that can be played without the disc, thus letting people sell the game disc but still be able to play the game. Doesn't sound legal to me.

Is this like that do-hickey for the PS2 that lets you play games from other regions? Or is it entirely different. (aside from it being a usb device)

I still don't see how they plan to get around the problem of nobody having a Blu-Ray writer.
Thats not how it works. You have to rip the OFFICIAL games directly with the PS3 itself. You cannot do it with burned games.

bit then you have to buy the game in the first place. This I realy don't think this is illegal. Just because it has the ability to be used thusly. Youre presuming guilt. I know I always make this analogy, but CD writer let's you burn discs for piracy. Should they be illegal?

I wonder if they'll get the connection that people stealing their work is what the PS3 guys feel from their the original jailbreakers work? Probably not "its only bad if it happens to me" and "it's only illegal if you're caught" and such. Still, I laugh at pirates pirating pirates. Cry some more, pirates, cry. some. more!

If this could turn your PS3 into a HTPC that would play PS3 games and BD movies (a la the first Xbox with a mod-chip) it would be pretty nifty. If all it does is play "backups" and has no FTP support it's not really that interesting.

I believe the proper response to this, at least in my case, is "... What."

This is a bit like telling people to make sure their bootleg DVDs come from authorized bootleg DVD retailers. Let's be honest, the USB "jailbreaking" device is going to be used in ways it shouldn't be, so it's almost silly to try to protect consumers from illegitimate versions of it when the original is pretty illegitimate itself. It's pretty ballsy though, and perhaps someone, somewhere, someday will use it for a purpose that might have some semblance of legality.

Isn't its major purpose illegal? It's major purpose is to crack PS3s, so people can use copied discs ergo, someone buying this is using to play pirated games. The whole idea of the device is pirating, how is anyone buying this not a pirate?
