I can't imagine boiling down the PS2 catalogue to 20 games, especially with that 1-per-series rule.
Don't be surprised if that's exactly what they do next year or a year after.
In an ideal world this is what the PS2 Classic would look like (assuming the 1-per-series restriction):

1. Beyond Good & Evil
2. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
3. God of War 2
4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
5. Katamari Damacy
6. Killer7
7. Killzone
8. Kingdom Hearts
9. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
10. Odin Sphere
11. Okami
12. Persona 4
13. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
14. Psychonauts
15. Ratchet & Clank
16. Resident Evil 4
17. Shadow of the Colossus
18. Silent Hill 2
19. Tales of the Abyss
20. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Eh, you'd have to sub a JRPG or three out for whatever racing/fighting game.

(That and if they put it out without a Final Fantasy, it would just be baffling)

Well, that's my ideal list. But realitically:
Tales of the Abyss for Final Fantasy X or XII.
TimeSplitters for Gran Turismo.
And I guess either Dragon Quest or Persona for a fighting game.

I'd replace Odin Sphere with Onimusha myself, but otherwise, I'd buy it with that lineup

Blech. If it's going to be an Onimusha then it should be 3. Say what you want about the plot but the gameplay and weapons in that game were fantastic. (Though I wouln't replace Odin Sphere with an Onimusha anyway. Take out Resident Evil 4, it's a fantastic game but it's not what I think of when I think of Playstation 2 games since it was originally for the Gamecube)

On topic. The PS1Classic sucks.

No Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Brave Fencer Mushashi, Suikuden 2, bah lemme get a hacked one with actual good shit on it.

Here's an idea for this mini-classic trend. Sony, Nintendo, whoever.
Why not give us a catalogue to choose from? Like choose 20 out of these 100 or something.

Not quite the same but you can add ROM to the SNES/NES classic (including of game that never were realease west side and are fan translated).

But yeah, they could easily let you connect to PSN, nintendo shop and let you download game already available.

How many of those have had remasters though?

I count maybe 11?

The problem is everyone has a different " Top 20" PS2 game list because the library was massive and original.

I sincerely wish that this would have been the lineup we got, but I completely understand why we didn't. The one we are getting though just seems so lackluster in comparison, even considering my tendencies to prefer RPGs over lots of other games. Lots of games on NA's lineup don't really seem like the best representatives of the system or of their series. I've also been scratching my head at Persona 1 being included when both halves of 2 are vastly better games.

My biggest personal bummer is G-Darius getting snubbed here. G-Darius is definitely sort of low-profile but it's one of my favorite schmups that I've ever played. The music is awesome and the gameplay is top notch, and I'm pretty disappointed we're not gonna have it barring importing.

1. Meh...I mean I feel this game was way too overrated.
2. Fine.
3. Choosing between God of War 1 and 2 is hard for me.
4. Fuck that, San Andreas > Vice City. San Andreas has aged far better gameplay wise.
7. Killzone?
8. Kingdom Hearts 2 is just more fun.
9. Agreed.
10. No comment since I never played Odin Sphere.
11. Fine
12. Never cared for Persona games yet.
13. Sands of Time is way too simplistic and repetitive. I prefer the sequels.
14. Never cared for this one.
15. Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, or Deadlocked/Gladiator.

Wow this is way better although both arc the lad 1 and 2 seems overkill).

1. Meh...I mean I feel this game was way too overrated.
To me it's basically non-Nintendo Zelda, my go-to Platonic ideal of 3rd person action-adventure.
2. Fine.
3. Choosing between God of War 1 and 2 is hard for me.
Yeah but having recently replayed both (the PS3 remasters) I feel like GoW2 is the better-rounded experience. First game overdoes the puzzle-platforming, especially towards the end (ie. Hades). Also there're only three bosses.
4. Fuck that, San Andreas > Vice City. San Andreas has aged far better gameplay wise.
Won't contest that but I never did finish San Andreas so I can't really judge.
7. Killzone?
8. Kingdom Hearts 2 is just more fun.
More polished for sure, I just prefer the first game's worlds. And I don't much care for that 5 hour prologue in KH2.
9. Agreed.
10. No comment since I never played Odin Sphere.
11. Fine
12. Never cared for Persona games yet.
13. Sands of Time is way too simplistic and repetitive. I prefer the sequels.
I couldn't stomach that butthurt Warrior Within sequel. Third game course-corrected but had those annoying Evil!setpieces. Also it just doesn't feel the same without the Farah banter.
14. Never cared for this one.
15. Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, or Deadlocked/Gladiator.
Really any R&C works, beginning with Going Commando the games change very little.
16. Fine.
17. Yes
