What's with all the reporting of seemingly harmless thread-creators? I can't stand these "report and move on" people. I'm not talking about reporting angry, nasty posters who are causing trouble and agrivation, but I do feel sorry for the seemingly innocent posters whose only replies are "reported" or some smug "report and move on, chaps".

I realise that at the moment I am in great danger of reportation.

It's not always about reporting the person, you see, it's about reporting the thread. Sometimes people really do try to search and so on, but if the thread has been done recently, there's no reason to have two of them, and the mods can close it. Most times people are even nice enough to redirect you to the original thread.

OMG HE'S DISTURBING THE PEACE!!11!!!1

I think I have been fairly lucky to have not gotten reported yet, alot of the posts I have made, I thought would be looked down upon, seeing how seemingly everybody and their dog gets reported for looking at someone funny....not even angrily, just...funny.

Sigh.
Perhaps you just haven't been on the internet long enough...
Anyway, it takes two reports for a post to actually be added to the moderation que, and if the post is in no way in need of moderator attention no action is taken.

Reports mean nothing if there is no good reason.
If you don't like the report and move on you shouldn't be on this site, it happens all the time and this thread alone is not enough to change any minds.

Probably because they are losers and have no influence or power over anything away from internet threads. Don't let it bother you, alot of internet forums are like that.

We report people who have a thread that doesn't offer anything for discussion, that is some retarded 'social experiment' (Like that PS3 SUCKS XBOX RULES thread that cropped up earlier today), or that is just asking for a flame war.

How many stupid threads have come up saying 'I hate this popular game, it sucks super bad...but I want to know why you like it'? Why? What's the point? There isn't discussion there, it's just people ramming their opinions into each other. The people who liked it already made up their mind, so did the people who didn't like it. So...report and move on.

Also, threads whose answers are available with a simple Google search, or if you just read the freaking forum guidelines. "Does the PS3 have wireless??" Google search that shit, don't make a thread. It's pointless, since it will be answered the first post (It should be anyways).

Read the forum guidelines, because they say your thread should involve some type of discussion.

Stop posting VS threads
Stop posting "I hate this game" threads
Stop posting repeat threads (The search button is marvelous)
Stop posting threads that can be answered with a Google search (It'll get answered faster).
Stop. Stop. Stop.

/Rant.

I only "report and move on" when it needs to be so. Infact, i've only ever seen that kind of comment on really stupid threads which deserve to be reported... your thread for example, is fine :)

That thread did offer potential for discussion. It shouldn't have been reported for that reason.

Way to steal my thunder.
I didn't report the OP because he makes a very good point. I usually say it myself, only when it's an obvious troll. This thread has a very good point made and the OP is not a troll or anything, so there's no need to report him. You two, on the other hand...

Report and move on indeed. Well done guys. Reported. As you wanted.

Meh, I feel it's unnecessary to state to the other folks that you just reported somebody.
But I don't think it's wrong to report if you really think the thread/post is pointless/worthless/only meant to incite flamewars/whatever.
Usually I don't feel strongly enough about such threads/posts to actually click the red button, though.
Which makes me wonder why I even bothered to write this post...?

No it didn't. It was a misleading title with a stupid premise.
"Why did you click on this thread?" was the question asked, but the answers given would have been it. What else is there to discuss? I clicked on that thread because the title was flame-bait, the OP probably was too, and therefore I was going to hit the report button. Now what can we discuss? My reasoning? It's in my answer. And the same would have been for everyone else's response.

Besides, the MODs evidently agreed with me (And the others who reported it) since it was quickly locked and the guy put on probation. The Escapist forums aren't for silly, meaningless social experiments. So play that shit on your friends, or other forums. Not here.

Yes it did offer potential, but you're saying that it's ok to mislead people on purpose? If he can do it, why can't other people do it? Why not everyone do it? Why not post a thread with the title "The Escapist shutting down?", then opening it to have it read "Nah guys just kidding but seriously..."? You have to draw a line, and you have to make examples for other people to understand.

Also, we are not social experiments, and do not deserve to be treated as such.
