That said, I "report and move on" if either: a) It's clearly a troll thread (i.e: "X SUCKS PROVE ME WRONG LOL") or threads that clearly didn't have a minute's thought put into it (i.e:"I think gams r fun lol. discuss!"). The moderators aren't idiots, they're perfectly capable of discerning when they should or should not take action independently of the reports. The reports basically a "hoy! look over here!" sign.

We report people who have a thread that doesn't offer anything for discussion, that is some retarded 'social experiment' (Like that PS3 SUCKS XBOX RULES thread that cropped up earlier today), or that is just asking for a flame war.

That thread did offer potential for discussion. It shouldn't have been reported for that reason.

No it didn't. It was a misleading title with a stupid premise.
"Why did you click on this thread?" was the question asked, but the answers given would have been it. What else is there to discuss? I clicked on that thread because the title was flame-bait, the OP probably was too, and therefore I was going to hit the report button. Now what can we discuss? My reasoning? It's in my answer. And the same would have been for everyone else's response.

Besides, the MODs evidently agreed with me (And the others who reported it) since it was quickly locked and the guy put on probation. The Escapist forums aren't for silly, meaningless social experiments. So play that shit on your friends, or other forums. Not here.

I disagree with the mods decision. You missed the point of the thread and reported it becuase of it.

Yes it did offer potential, but you're saying that it's ok to mislead people on purpose? If he can do it, why can't other people do it? Why not everyone do it? Why not post a thread with the title "The Escapist shutting down?", then opening it to have it read "Nah guys just kidding but seriously..."? You have to draw a line, and you have to make examples for other people to understand.

Also, we are not social experiments, and do not deserve to be treated as such.

Well the point of the thread was to ask why we are so attracted to something that would obviously be a troll. I think that the thread is most effective because the poster used a trick to lure us in. It allows us to better answer the question asked in the thread.

I wouldn't care if people used mind tricks so long as they actually created an interesting thread.
