Please help me find another forum/online community.

I've asked these sorts of questions at online forums before, usually to not very good results like "why would you want to go anywhere else" or something like that. I think some people view it as advertising and I think on some forums it isn't even allowed. But I'm hoping I'll get lucky this time. I've noticed tonight I'm a bit frustrated and tempted to behave badly. And stoop down to levels I shouldn't stoop down to.

I was wondering if you could help me. I need a new site. You see, I love video games, or at least, I think I do. Being on the Escapist makes me question that sometimes. I love thousands of video games, and so, naturally, I thought I would fit in here. But I think that perhaps, things haven't gone optimally.

And yet, somehow I don't belong here. That long list of games I like wasn't for you to read all of, it was to prove a point that when I think of all the games I like, versus the games that I don't, I feel like I enjoy most video games in general. But somehow what I like doesn't fit around here, me, and the Escapist, aren't the same kind of video game fan. I don't enjoy most of what the Escapist likes, and the Escapist hates what I like with a passion.

So I need somewhere else to go. If you know my tastes, and you probably do, as notorious as I am, where I could go. A website that would be fitting for my video games tastes and desires. Someplace not completely alienating, even, would be good enough. I really want someplace to talk about video games that I like. I don't like being alone, and I hate to sound melodramatic by saying that, but I don't have an online community like that right now. Therefor, I'm kind of alone in terms of online communities. Not completely, but fairly so. And I don't want to be.

So please please help me. Help me say goodbye to the Escapist, and hello to greener pastures. And thank you for your time.

There are plenty of people here that love many of those games (just skimming through it was enough to notice that).

All you have to do is pay attention to the threads which deal with them positively and ignore the others, or seek out any respective groups.

Another useful tip; Let's say someone makes a thread "what's your favourite modern military shooter". It's pointless to go in and say "none, they all suck!". Instead, you ignore it and wait for someone to make a thread about something you like...or make one yourself.

You said Drill Dozer in that list, I LOVE that game, I just remembered I have it around somewhere and I haven't finished it, I love Seiken Densetsu 3 too so I can understand why it's there more than once, in fact I like all of the games I've played that are on that list, but I agree people tend to concentrate on negativity around these parts, that's why I don't use the Gaming Discussion section that often, but anyway I don't know of any places, but you could pick a game at random and we'll gush about it together!

As far as MMOs go, Mabinogi is actually one of the few I still play every once in a while, so I was surprised to see that there, in fact I played it yesterday, so cheers you seem to have good taste madamme.
I'm just going to hit post before I see another game to gush about, and there are plenty.

Honestly, it's not about what you like but about how you express it. Your posts come off as a little arrogant. Like that goddamn Touhou thread. There is honestly no need for that OP to be as long as it is. That only increases the chance that people will ignore it completely. A simple paragraph or two probably would have sufficed. It only serves to give you an image that isn't very positive.

And if the thread is about a type of game that you don't like, then don't fucking post there. You got bent out of shape when people come into your thread and go "hurrdurr this sucks", so going and doing that right back doesn't solve anything.

To be frank, it's not all your fault. People were being dicks to you in that Touhou thread. But trying to play a completely innocent victim of unfair persecution is going too far. You still hold some responsibility for the alienation that is caused.

This is a pretty good example of what not to do. It comes off as a largely victimized outburst which either makes people feel back or makes people take exception to what your saying. If you actually want advice on another forum to visit all you need to say is.

"Hey Escapist, I'm interested in <Insert Media/Games here> and would like to find a forum that specialises in this. Anyone have any suggestions?"

It doesn't paint any pictures of whats going on.
Theres nothing offensive to latch onto.
Theres nothing to misinterpret.
Its short so everyone is likely to read it.

Also to say you like videogames is extremely broad. Every forum has its own cultures and subculture attached to it. I love roleplaying games so I enjoy hanging around Giant in the Playground forums but thats only because how that particularly group approaches roleplaying games. I wouldn't dare step into their D&D 3.5 subforum because of how their approach differs so much to mine. Similiarly I would never join the Wizards of the Coast forum because their approach to roleplaying games is so radically different to mine and I dont like the social norm for that community. For the people there is probably not a big deal but everything from tone, topics of conversation and approaches to answering questions play a large factor in a place you can enjoy.

The escapist has their wierd approach of objectivity > subjectivity which is fine except when a discussion hits a topic that is weighted in subjectivity (like say...preference in videogames). People then pretend to argue objectively and it becomes absolutely hilarious to watch. Definitely not everyone but it pops up enough to be entertaining.

Given your list of games being things that dont interest me in the slightest (yes, even Zelda games) I can't direct you at a perfect solution. I can explain the logic I go through to find a game. I also believed for a while that there were not forums out there that fit what I was interested in. My favourite game is Baldur's Gate 2. I went 12 years before I ever met a single person either on the internet or in person who had heard of the game let alone ever played it. Im lucky in that those types of games might actually see a resurgence in the future. I often argued (and occasionally still do) that these types of games contain a large set of elements that modern rpgs are missing and for that they are seriously lacking. The arguement is about as silly as any arguement and the only thing I really have going for me is that in most cases I've played both the old and new while my opposite has only played the new. Again, the arguement is still entirely subjective but thats not the point.

What he said. Echoing both Smash and Shinji, you need to change your attitude when dealing with other forum members. Not everyone is going to share the same opinions, or like the same things, but you can't go accusing them of victimizing you. It's better to shrug it off, and find other members who share your tastes.

Why do you need to leave? You can still post on here and also on other forums, it's not as if the escapist staff are going to hunt you down and kidnap you if you do.

If you're into the chans, I'd recommend looking at some of those (420chan is awesome, and obviously everyone has heard of 4chan). And there are some very good forums on reddit, as long as you immediately unsubscribe from all the default subreddits.
