I saw that someone said they were based on New York, but I find the girl more Texas than NY. Hell, the guy doesn't even look NY, he looks more...not rural, but a smaller city than NY, Chicago maybe? Look like he's NE US looking, and the girl is more southern. So the choices are a Northern boy in what looks like a strange track suit, or a Southern girl during the time that it isn't below 70 degrees (those whole like 4 weeks I bet, I'm an Ohioan, we have Fall, Winter, Snow Winter and construction, so I dunno what the South is like year round)

It's...odd...but at least she's wearing shorts rather than a skirt. And besides, it's a game that anime based. It's a JRPG where you have magical pets doing all the crazy fighting instead, at least the boy LOOKS like a boy instead of being dressed in magical fairy dust made vests and pants that look more like skirts. And again, she's at least wearing short rather than having a short skirt

Funny you mention this. Because the more I play the game, the more I find that while I do like the smartness of my male trainer, I wish he'd cut his hair by a few inches. The girl trainer, on the other hand, seems to be more of an outgoing, adventurous character - which is better suited for an adventure game like Pokemon, in my book!
I like both character designs, and they were some of the most interesting things going into the game. I respect if you don't, though, but it seems like an exaggeration to call the game sexist just because of this - Pokemon's always been the sort of game that's tried to appeal to both genders equally. Just look at Cynthia, who's been my favourite champion since Lance in Silver.

I do dearly hope that isn't the case, as it's saying that any and all women who want to play the game have to either want to be eyecandy to guys, or play the other gender's character if they want to seem normal - and that's just preposterous.

Hands up for a proper character creation for the pokemon games instead of picking pre-sets.

The US has been locked in a hardcore puritan oppression for a few centuries. It would be nice to see us mature and stop shitting flames and blood each time someone doesn't wear a radiation suit. Or to be less hyperbolic, anytime anyone wears anything we don't find acceptable.
^THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS! Seriously, this whole thread over short shorts!

I find it more offensive that the PCs official English names are 'Hilbert' and 'Hilda'.

Yeah, I think that'd be pretty good.
This works quite well, even if it's not quite what you need for a game. (it's a single static image after all):

This is my attempt at a pokemon trainer to represent me personally from a while back. (I've been using this as my profile pic on facebook for ages. XD)

I recently got Pokemon White and I wasn't too happy with the female either. -.-

Absolutely hate her outfit and those shorts are terrible! It'd be much better if we could just customize our own character and clothes.

I must be the only person who finds nothing wrong with either character.

Then again, I'm incredibly lax about things as trivial as this.

Oh and her hair is rather typical too.

She doesn't need a whole ritual to fix it like someone else:

Oh and by the way, the HS/SS girl is not that much better, her suspenders aren't the only thing she wears lol:

Huh, I never realized how overly complicated Dawn's hairstyle is. Looks good though.

Edit: just realised that I'm playing as her right now.

Yeah, she has 3 clips on it and she uses an elastic band to suspend her hair before putting the side clips and then replaces it with a third clip...makes you wonder why she wears a hat after all that trouble lol.

I miss the R/S/E design.

Especially the greened up ones from Emerard.

Loved those sprites.

That said, it really doesn't matter.

Dem Shorts are definitely a plus in my book. Named my Trainer "Revy." But, what's up with the spiky protruding pockets? Are they even pockets?

I'd LOVE to have a customizable sprite feature though...

I just thought the contrast between the outfits was weird.

Guy in pants with a full sleeve jacket and ball cap. Looks like a normal guy.
Girl in short shorts and damned hiking boots, a top with no sleeves, and a really goofy "trailer park style" haircut. Looks like she needs some help from professionals in picking out an outfit that doesn't scream "I AM AN IDIOT!"

Okay, that's a bit odd then. Whatever, not terribly important though. You spend more time looking at tiny little sprites, and you only see the fully drawn version for a second or two before each battle.

My game does claim it's winter right now though (although much like nighttime, you can't really tell because they don't make it look wintery just like they don't make it look dark), so I have to imagine that the guy going through the game would be thinking "Man it's chilly out here." while the girl is going "FUCK IT'S COLD!!!"

Unless her outfit is made out of the same nonsense the people in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs had that also magically makes your bare flesh immune to cold as well. I don't care how warm you claim your uniform is, lady. It's not even covering your arms or legs, your ass is going to get cold up on that snowy mountain. Yeah, Brendan and May were both outfitted rather well. Although finding out that the spiky white thing is actually just one very strange hat instead of white hair and a headband was a real mindfuck.

Hey, that's just a stereotypical version of southern US. We get FIVE whole weeks of cold weather, that's 25% more cold weather than you'd expect. Sometimes we're (un)lucky and get some of those weeks back-to-back.

If you want to dress your avatar, play Pokemon Colosseum. The avatars are seen infrequently, and you usually only see them from behind. What I would have liked, however, is the characters' outfits changing along with the seasons.

I don't really find much to complain about with the female character's design. I'm from the south and shorts+tee are pretty normal. Sure, the vest, hat and boots are unusual, but if Gamefreak's going for a tomboy look, it's pretty good. Take away the vest and change the boots to sneakers and she'd look extremely normal.

I think the problem most people have is with the torn shorts. If they were just short shorts She'd look like May, except dressed normally. The torn shorts give people a strong opinion about her personality. This combines with the vague age to make for awkwardness.

I think she looks fine and the fact that the only complaint that people have with the game are the PC and a few Pokemon designs is proof that the game is better than it's ever been, I remember people complaining about glitches or exploits in every previous generation but not this time around. Just a bunch of prudes that scream slut when more than 2 inches of flesh are visible on a female body. And hell, I love that big ponytail!

I will never play a gen V game as anyone but Touko!
