How did this work...? Did they use DS's? Or... did you bring Pokémon to life?
We used DSes. The good thing is SoulSilver and HeartGold have a flat-battle option that sets all the pokemon to level 50 to make it equal, so if you had those versions you only had to make sure to level to 50 or above. Anyone with an older version unfortunately was going to be facing level 100s without the flat-battle option, but it worked out.

That sounds cool, but considering the amount of hardcore people who follow the metagame it'd be hard for any casual fan to win any badges.
Nah, they actually had it set up so you don't really need to worry about the metagame to win a few badges. Only a few of the leaders bothered with the EV/IV stuff, and even then it wasn't for the whole team but for one or two specific pokemon, but even the gym-leaders in the games have one that's the rear guard of the team and is tougher to beat (Lucario, Miltank, Dragonite, etc.). They wanted to design it so even casual players would be able to win badges. Plus you only needed 6 to challenge the elite four instead of 8 like the games, so if you were able to meet up with everyone else you had a decent shot. Only catch was that gym leaders could only be challenged once per day, and if you lost during the elite four then you couldn't re-challenge them.
I wasn't a gym leader this year, but I think I'll go ahead and apply for next year's PAX. And John, I will specifically be looking to challenge you next year - I want an Escapist badge!
