Wow, there's really no satisfying some people. People complained about kids getting shot, so they developed a number of non-lethal weapons designed to take people like this down without actually hurting them... And people still ***** about it. Fine then, we'll just shoot the next one in the head, maybe that would be a preferable solution. Oh wait, but that would be lethal, so we'll use a taser instead. Oh, but that's excessive, so we'll just beat him to death. Oh, but that would be lethal, so we'll just use pepper spray. Oh, but that's excessive, so... Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

I think just about everyone in this discussion has forgotten the state of public liability these days. Trust me, I work in a school, and I know how developed 8 year olds are. I know I could hold one down if it had to, and so could ANY of the staff here. But, in America, and many other developed countries, you lay a hand on him and something happens as a result, and suddenly it's "short-tempered teacher beats student! Parents press charges!" and the teacher becomes a target for the mob. It overshadows whatever the kid was doing, and the school's credibility goes out the window as the media overplays everything that the teacher did, even if it resulted in slight bruising. You also have to consider how easily kids bruise and hurt themselves, and what kind of position this puts the school in.

This is obviously a result of cases in the past where teachers have lost their cool and used excessive force in dealing with children, and where the call for corporal punishment has been made at times, to deal with unruly kids doing whatever the hell they want (shoplifting, abusing people anywhere in the street, vandalism) but it's a very fine line. Basically, here both the cops AND the school were scared to lay hands on him for fear of *guaranteed* public outrage, and did what they thought at the time would cause minimal harm, and despite the grief they caused the kid, he's recovered from it, as most people do.

This does NOT mean that:
- Police always use pepper spray or taser at the appropriate time (my friend was tasered last year while pinned down on the ground with his hands behind his back)
- Just talking him down and waiting for him to calm would be sufficient, because he needs to learn that there are *some* consequences for his actions. Coming from experience, I've been like that at times in my life, resulting in all kinds of shit from broken knuckles to big house repair costs

Justified the only other option they had was to tackle and disarm the child and people would be even more upset about that.

Tbh if two teachers lock themselves in because an 8 year old wants to kill them with a stick its just pathetic. Two full grown adults ran away from an 8 year old with a stick...

Totally Justified, what else were they going to use on him?
Maybe just grab him? It's a kid... with a STICK. If cops are afraid of that then they need a different profession. Perhaps, say.... chef? Toilet scrubber? Veterinarian?
Then they would get accused of manhandling the child, considering he would be kicking and screaming the entire time pepper spray was probably their best choice.
Really? Using chemical weapons that cause torment is less of an assault then simply grabbing someone? If that was my kid I would be pissed they did what they did instead of simply stopping them. If it was so easy to sue police for assault, then police wouldn't be able to touch anyone.

Seriously? My first thought in reading this story is that the teachers are pussies for not being able to restrain a bitchy 8 year old. Maybe the teachers were particularly frail or something but come on, he's EIGHT! SIT ON HIM! As a summer camp counselor I had to deal with kids threatening people and each other with sticks and rocks on an almost daily basis. Same thing to the cops of course. Of course I don't know all of the details, but the bottom line seems like the kid has no discipline, probably the result of his father being absent.

Oh fuck, I hate the sort of reporting where they blatantly try to get you to identify with one particular party.

Anyway, I think this was justified. Simply being a child doesn't mean that the police can't try to use pepper spray to control him, if he's acting so violently.

Ew, what an ugly kid. I want to punch him so much right now!

Anyway, on topic: of course this was justified! They should fucking close his ass up in juvenile prison or something. If he acts like this now, what is he going to do when he is older?

PS: Oh and he wants to grow up to be a marine. Fan-FUCKING-tastic! This topic made me rage more than I wanted, so I will stop commenting...

while i still think taser are used waaaaaaaay to often this seems just fine to me, what boggles my mind is that the teachers could not stop a 8-year old before he got a long sharp object, isn't that their job in this kind of institution? since i wasn't there they not have had the opportunity or maybe they just didn't want the school to be sued for physically attacking a student down the line but still

For the people that say it was too much force for an 8 year old, look at the picture, that kid is big, and if he realy wants to kill, i mean, realy wants you dead, you are going to need to do what is necessary, pardon the play on words, but he wasn't playing with kid gloves.

The kid was trying to KILL two people. I think they should have snapped his arms and legs.
Kill people with a stick when he's 8?

I think pepper spray is fine in this situation since parenting obviously has failed. But he wasn't going to kill anyone.
A kid with a stick at 8 is probably more dangerous than a 16 year old since most beatings to death are by little twats kids since their brain hasn't formed to where they know when to stop.

I really hope this kid overcomes his anger issues. Don't know how it could be done with modern psychiatric medication/counseling, but poor guy looks like he wants to live his life straight. Just doesn't have the brain chemistry to do so.
Yeah, he seems like a nice kid when he's at home. But when he rages like this, sure, pepperspray the bastard.

It's a kid run up and grab him, the cops could easily over power him and if they can't over power and eight year old then jeez find new cops.

definitely justified. i woulda shot him. damn kids not listening to directions.
That is extreme.
I remember I used to wave stuff when my brother was moving in on me. Too bad I am too much of a pussy and he knows it so he just charges me and I drop whatever I am holding and run. I wish I was less nice sometimes.

Anyone who thinks an eight-year-old can't harm an adult hasn't spent that much time around eight-year-olds.

Maybe the police could have handled it better, but I'd hardly hold it against them. The mother is lucky after the police having been called out for her child on three occasions that there's a school for her child to go to anymore at all. It's not like she can expect the authorities to assign a specific detail just to deal with her son, which almost sounds like what she expects.

Still, it could have been a lot worse in any number of ways. It doesn't sound like she's suing, and her son looks like he's recovered. He could have been tasered. Or beaten. Or shot.

"I think that falls under excessive force. It's an 8 year old, he may not be fully aware of his actions and what he could do... but he's 8! He's probably not even strong enough to hurt someone with that stick he had."

Have you looked at the statistics of parents, grandparents, and bystanders killed by children 8 years of age or younger? You should.

And frankly, it's people who complain about 'excessive force' that *result* in this 'can't touch little Timmy or you'll get sued' situation we're in. Parents don't take responsibility for the fact their kid is a psychotic bully, but OH MY don't you dare lay a finger on him! You dirty cops, how dare you pepper spray my boy! I'm sure that six year old girl he was beating to death had it coming!

What do you guys think? Was this justified or totally not needed?
I think it was good. Violent people need to be shown that violent behavior has violent consequences; including (especially) children.

The physical bullying that went on when I was in school was deplorable. Thankfully I was always one of the more 'popular' kids with a group of friends that prevented me from experiencing some of the worst of it, but I saw things that would NEVER fly in today's school environments.

And that is a good thing.

Then again, we didn't bring guns to school and shoot each other when I was a teenager or pre-teen, either. Thankfully I went to school well pre-Columbine.

So long as there's nothing permanant and it's only temporary sure.

If I (being 15) went on a rampage with a stick (lol) than police can break my legs for all I care, so long as there's no permanent damage.

I would probably look back and be thankful that they did it.

Sorry, I'm not one of those guys that's always sticking up for the police. Some of them can and do go to far sometimes. This isn't one of those times though.

Man, if I'd pulled some crap like that when I was a kid, I'd have been lucky to just get off with a bit of pepper spray in the face.

Anyway, being that young he is kinda small, so I'm not sure why they didn't just grab him and throw him in the back of a police cruiser, but the mom probably would've complained about that being too violent as well.

She should probably be pepper sprayed as well, just for good measure.
