I love the way those morons think though. One person suddenly thought "gay people might find this offensive!" and they changed the name. The verdict from the gay community: "No it isn't offensive. Stop being stupid."

I feel you should always be allowed to say what you like, as long as you never try and act upon it.

Edit: Let me elaborate. Freedom of speech means that you can say whatever you like. Yes, even terms that would be considered racist. However, the moment you actually act upon those words (such as using them to insult someone) you can be held accountable.

Anyway, I don't really care much about political correctness. I mean, sure if the view is purposely racist or insultiing of a race (Things like "The Jews are a race but they're not human") then yeah, it could mean a big deal, but if it's just something like a kid's nursery rhyme about black sheep I think that just goes over the top.

PC becomes a problem when it takes away our freedom. Sure, wouldn't it be nice for people who don't celebrate Christmas to not have to hear "Merry Christmas" all the time in December? So why not change it to "Happy Holidays?" The problem is that by giving someone the freedom to not listen to someone with freedom of speech, we take away the freedom from that person.

In my opinion, if everyone is equal, regardless of race, religion, or sexual preference, then why do we give advantages to certain people because of their race, religion, or sexual preference? Examples:

Affirmative Action: chances a minority getting the job increased, chances a white male decreased, rather than just hiring who is better for the job.

In Seattle, illegal immigrants are given a free education at the University of Washington. FREE! Why is it that we make hard working American citizens jump through all these hoops to go to the best college in Washington state, when ILLEGAL immigrants get in for FREE?!

Also in Seattle, people want to give free housing to predominately African Americans living in the "projects". Yeah, America is going through a depression, and they want to give gangsters free houses. If you are living in the projects, and all of a sudden you get a free house, are you really going to feel the need to move ahead in life and get out?

Now, we all know that for years there has been white on black corruption in the law. Well in Seattle, 3 African American teens who beat a white man to death got 90 days in juvy. Reverse the roles: 3 white teens killing an African American. Those teens would be locked up for a hell of a lot longer than 90 days! Even if it was just 3 white teens killing a white man, 90 days in juvy would seem insane. So if all races are equal, then why are punishments reduced for certain races? Are white people the only people in the world that can be racist?! This is only one out of 9 black on white attacks in Washington state in which the attackers have got FAR less than what they should have got.

Does someone understand where I am coming from? I don't want white supremacy. I don't want oppression. I just want everyone to be EQUAL!

Exactly I agree, although yes there are word I don't think someone should say I think freedom of speech makes it so we can't restrict it, but also threat should not be tolerated because that is not freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can't be held responsible for things you've said. Its not that you said it that's illegal, its how the word is used and to whom. (For example calling someone a "dirty ******" as an insult, would be socially unacceptable )

Don't really have a good answer about how to answer it, except throw in as many lawyers as you can fit and let them fight it out while you sit back and eat popcorn or something.

Anyway, no term is in itself racist, but the use of the word can be. So the whole thing is up to context.

For example the word ******, which some seem afraid to type, can be used, and is used, among friends of african decent. And also by friends of black people. All this is ok. No harm.

Then you have the ones that use it in a negative context, hailing back to the KKK and the likes with expressions like "Fucking ******!" and "Noone cares, it's just a ******!" and such, which is bad. And every human being of decent brain capacity understands this.

But then you have the anti racism groups and such that's won all the hard battles and now are getting bored making all the perfectly normal words bad. These people need a life even more that I do!

You know, I think it's because all the hard *obvious* battles have been fought. Now it's stuff that's more difficult to get a handle on, stuff that is as much about issues like poverty as it is about race. So it's easier to latch on to clearly identifiable--but smaller--problems.

It's a lot like abortion and the pro-life people: making sure that child services are competent and up to the task of caring for children in need of government protection from things like abuse and neglect, well, it's hard to identify how you go about doing that. But hey! You can stop legal abortions just by passing a law, because it's way easier to effectively regulate doctors than it is to effectively regulate social workers. So the focus goes to the smaller but more easily identified problem.

The pro-lifers tend to be reilgious nutcases though. Anyway, it all seems to fall down on the standard idiocy of the generic members of the human race.

Hi I would like to thank you for illustrating my point rather well, that any old bigoted trash can be spewed out with only the need to say political correctness to make your argument correct.

We start off with the normal war on Christmas crap, you know for their being a war on Christmas it has a surprising habit of being exactly the same thing every year. It is just tabloid drivel pumped out to make people angry with phony stories and other such nonsense.

Oh and what is this affirmative action here is a new argument I wonder if it has any evidence behind it or is it just a bunch of everyone knows stuff. Do we have any proof that minority are being picked over better qualified majority applicants? Or hell if two people similarity qualified go for the same job why shouldn't we hire the minority candidate over you?

Poor people getting free education to help them get on in life and pull them selves out of the gutter? Say it isn't so, how could this happen. Also I would like some more information on this as I find it hard to believe there is not more to it than what you are saying.

Ok next we go onto black people being gangsters? Or are you pointed out that more black people are poor so make up a bigger proportion of the social housing system? I am more than a little confused. Also black people are being let off easier for crimes than whites? Is this a joke? No really is this a joke?

That and yes I get where you are coming from I just don't like it.

Now as a side note any one else out there not like the term African American? Personally while I don't think it is an offencive one it is making two assumptions about a person that might not be right. Not all black people are from Africa and they are certainly not all American, also given how long some families have been in American are they really any thing but just Americans?

I know--WTF? That's terrible. Stupid, white, middle/upper-class people trying to befriend minorities is clearly a major issue in society today that must be dealt with before it leads us into social ruin.

It actually is harmful, mostly thanks to the press though.

For example, with the story I was commenting on, people will walk away from that thinking gay people are petty enough to want fairy penguins renamed to little penguins. Especially when conservative newspapers pick up the story and cut out the bits where local gay groups were reached for contact. (because this part will make the gays seem reasonable and human)

So I believe the lack of understanding shown by the waterpark workers to be more destructive than productive.

I think Political correctness is a stupid idea. I mean there are certain things that are good,like I don't think anyone should say the N word. Also, we should call things by their proper names but we shouldn't be forced to say for instance visually challenged rather than blind. Things have gotten so crazy about PC and trying not to step on toes. I will give you an example of a companies response to an e-mail.

My wife is a nurse and has a doctor friend who was almost car jacked. The incident happened like this. Two cars pulled up to either side of her(the doctor)and a woman got out of one of the cars and stood in front of the doctor's car. The woman said to the doctor "What are you gonna do, run me over?" to which the doctor noded "yes" and floored it. She didn't hit the girl but the two cars gave chase as she called 911. She eventually lost her persurers and a cop found her. She had a very clear view of the people who tried to attack her (and do god knows what), but the cop never asked what race they were (I just found that odd, but not really part of the story I'm trying to tell here). The doctor's mother sent out an e-mail to people that work with the doctor as a warning and telling them to be careful in certain areas of town. In her e-mail she described the event. In her words (and an accurate description) she described the scene as "two cars full of black guys and one girl". The hospital she worked for has now requested that the e-mail not be forwarded as it has a racist tone.

Nobody seemed to care that a doctor may have been killed, but that an e-mail by the doctors mother may have been offensive, yeah... that's the real problem with this whole story... (in case you couldn't tell that last part was in massive sarcasm quotes)

What about fighting words? There's clearly established legal precedents that if you make threats that's not protected speech. Many have made the argument that racist terms constitute an inherent threat since they are somehow inherently dehumanizing. It seems like a defensible position, but the implications for freedom of speech are obviously bad. Your thoughts?

Political Correctness itself doesn't annoy me, but the way people act about it does. The thing is that most political correct people don't know when to tell others to be politically correct. I think that if you but in on someone's conversation just to tell them not to call someone "gay", you're being dumb. If you are in a conversation with someone, and you don;t like it that they are using certain terms, then you can tell them that, but don't let their choice of words determine the validity of what ever the other person is saying. That's what annoys me the most. When people don't listen to someone's opinion because they think it's not politically correct. I think political correctness is a good thing, but it shouldn't determine whether someone is right or wrong about something.

I hate the whole PC culture we live in - it is not okay to say 'racially handicapped', the term is black/coloured etc.

The idea of being PC assumes and almost forces any and all ethnic groups to take themselves too seriously. Yes, you shouldn't call people derogatory terms but at the same time you should be able to say certain colloquial terms. E.g. you can't say the 'n' word to a black man, but at the same time you should be able to say 'black' without feeling the need to correct yourself to say 'African-American' or whatever. In all actuality I think that sometimes saying a PC term can be patronising and condescending - hows that for irony?
