An add on? Nope, never going to happen. A new Xbox 360 with Blue Ray built in? More possible, but also I doubt its going to happen. Microsoft has all the Xbox 360's they're probably going to sell out in the market, releasing a, what, fourth, would probably hurt they're profits, most people are going to already have an Xbox and say "why should I fork out another 300 for the blue ray?"

Blu-Ray is a Sony product. Microsoft would have to pay Sony in order to put a blu-ray player in the 360, so its not gonna happen.

If Microsoft releases a Blu-Ray Player addon, pretty much everyone would think they copied Sony. Regardless, if you want a BluRay player then PS3 is probably the way to go since, it's probably one of the cheapest options, plus it doubles as a games consoles, who'da thunk it?

Since Sony owns Blu-Ray it's impossible. If Microsoft tried to utilize Blu-ray it would be the equilvalent of shooting themselves in the foot from a competitive market standpoint.

I think Sony own the technology, so all companies have to pay Sony a fee to make each player.

To me it was a move that damaged the sales of the PS3, but worked out for Sony overall, as they've now become the next big video format.

However, call me a luddite, but I just don't see the appeal of buying all my stuff again, vhs to dvd was a big leap, with the space saving, the instant leaping from place to place in a movie, the chapters allowing ease of access to episodes of a TV show, and many other nice bonuses.

From what I see of Blu ray, its 'dvd - but a bit shinier, if you've already spent over £1000 on your home cinema, else its dvd'

also are blu rays not around 50gb of storage?

Why not instead of slightly increasing the quality of old dvds, instead use it as a way of packaging old TV in a more saleable format, for instance, the complete 'friends' or 'seinfeld' on one disc.

However I can see that struggling against the psychology of the consumer, it's still hard to get past the idea that you should get a big box of stuff if you're paying more.

I also think its pretty much bull crap to re-release everything on blue ray but in a few years they would completeley replace DVD

Um...yes, there already is.

It's not Blu Ray, but I'm sure there will be a variation of that.
no, I doubt it. the 360 is pretty much set with DVD atm.

the NEXT xbox, will no doubt buy a blu-ray license from Sony, or some other Blu-ray developer that springs up before the next gen. They'll want their system to be uptodate with the newest disc technology.

but the current one is stuck with regular DVD, and don't tell anyone to buy that HD DVD piece of crap - HD DVD has already failed the competition with blu-ray. They're not making any more HD DVD movies or games.

"After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008."

I think that we would have heard something a bit more concrete, considering by that article it should have been out for a year and a quarter.

Actually, if you've kept up with the last six months or so of discussion, Microsoft has already stated that there will be no next Xbox, or at least not for a while, Project NATO will be taking it's place.

I have kept up. And I still stand by what I said. I know that this generation will last longer then any prior generation.. probably a 10 or 15 year cycle even. But there will be a Next Xbox eventually. It's inevitable. The newest nvidia card has like 3 billion transistors on it. Technology will advance. There's no stopping it. Eventually the console market will advance with it.

Then sony would make money from 360 sales, pretty sure that's not a good business idea.

You know, I never noticed that 2008 thing. Hah.
I used this in an arguement with my friend who claimed that our friends Xbox could play Blu-Ray. Time to pull that plug again, I knew it couldn't.
God damn my oversight.

Ty, tbh.

From May 2nd 2008? Irrelevant.

It might happen sometime, but it's unlikely.
Corrected my above post, I'd misread it previously and only found the article and linked it.
Carry on pointing it out though, I found it funny I was so wrong yet so sure.

Of course there will eventually be a next console, and, as a matter of fact, I recall typing, "at least not for a while." Anyway, yes, I'm sure that the "Xbox 720" is already in the blueprint stage, and will be released sometime in the next decade....that is, unless, something terrible happens and Microsoft goes bankrupt before then. *evil laugh*

This is partly why i brought my ps3 over a 360, its saved me and my bf a rediculous amount of money by not having to buy a new blu-ray/dvd player which would cost more than my pre-owned ps3.
