As many Minecraft players know, the 1.5 update was recently implemented. Ignoring the fact that there is no rain or snow (pigman problem apparently), what do you think of it? Do you think Notch did well or do you think he "betrayed" the concept of the game? Did this update do anything at all? Was it just another useless addition?

Another thought; has anyone actually seen the achievements? I wasn't really excited about the whole idea but I expected at least a couple of good achievements.
I completed all of them in less than ten minutes (in a new map). The only one I couldn't complete was the Flying Pigs mission (I had to play an older game to get that one). One of the "quests" tells the player to convert a log into planks... Seriously Notch? A fucking tutorial?! Here I was expecting a list of random challenges that nobody ever does (like he said it would be like) and what do we get? A beginners lesson in the basics.

Whoopi.

Maybe its just me, I really don't know. Would humor have helped these ridiculously easy quests? Probably but they still would be lame.

What are your thoughts?

Here's the actual achievements
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Achievements

EDIT: I realize it helps out beginners but why couldn't Notch just call it a tutorial than? Its not achievements, you don't "achieve" anything.

It was pretty pointless. It pretty much just functions like a tutorial, which is definitely nice, but not was I was expecting for achievements.

Still, it's something.

It certainly sounds to me like Notch, this "God among indie developers", is going the route of every other game company who managed to make money and become popular.

Funny how things work out, isn't it?

The achievements are a good idea because they actually help to start the game as a beginner. When I first started I hade to go to the Wiki to find out how to craft everything. But the achievements help you create basic things you need like a workbench.

I welcome any experimentation within the game, if it makes it more accessible to new players it's fine by me.

Yeah, it could be considered a miniature tutorial in a sense.

RUINED FOREVER. WE HAVE BEEN BETRAYED.

No, really. I can barely be bothered to notice cheevos unless they involve some off-the-wall idea I would never have thought of. It's a nice idea in terms of providing a tutorial for the new kids without some blocky drill sergeant demanding you punch trees.

I'm looking forward to cart tracks without booster detours.

It's more of a tutorial than anything, but I think he's going about it the wrong way. It pretty much just says "do this, do this, do this" and there isn't much room for the sense of discovery. I've always thought that if Minecraft was going to have a tutorial system it would be worked into the world more.

eh, not quite neccesary but it would be nice...a small short tutorial on how to make a crafting chest, torches and a pickaxe would be nicer.

For me what sucks in all of this is that the new content of each update looks like something that could easily be made in two days. The wolfs were the only ones that were ok recently.

There are only 10 achievments or something like that, is it really that hard to create them? Why not, "Go to the top of the world" (reach maximum height) and "Go to the end of the world" (reach minimum height). There, two simple achievments that end up being more interesting then all the other ones combined.

They are made for newer players to start off.

Seems incredibly pointless, honestly. He might as well have just made a tutorial section.

Considering they dont tell you how to do anything, I think its rather good that you can do those achievements. Sur,e they're crappy achievements, but they're still achievements. I still dont know how to farm.

OT: I dont know, right now they're pretty tame, but then again, they are early achievements meant for players just getting in. I dont mind them, though it seemed like a waste of wood.

He said he's adding more of them with each update. These ones are shite because he rushed the update so he could play Portal 2.

Haha. Yeah I did hear something about that. But why couldn't he start with at least two good achievements? I don't care if half-life 3 came out today (actually I do care but whatever), thats not a good enough excuse for messing with your fans.

now this is all bullshit. no offence, but it is.
this was a new idea, someone said "hey why dont we put an achievement list in the game so people can feel better about their work!"
notch thought on it and liked the idea
notch didn't want to spend a month on this little idea that people may hate
notch creates a small list of things for people to do and waits for response
and now you guys are giving him bunk information, tell him what you thought about the SYSTEM not the achievements he came up with in an hour
...
...
...
and the mystery was solved

I hate achievements in all games, I wish they would just fuck right off, pointless bullshit that I never bother with. However these achievements are great, minecraft has be crying out for a tutorial since day one and now it has a pretty passable one that is completely optional. As long as he keeps the achievements like this I can see them being used heavily to drive whatever "story" will be eventually incorporated.

Oh, and another thing: If you check out the version history [http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Version_history], you might notice it was more than just weather and afterthought-chievements.

Which, from what I've heard, is a valid excuse, and hope to be starting to use that excuse today
