Waahaaaah this updates r sux cuz ther iz only achievemnts and they sux!!11!!11!1one!!1eleven

Actual update:
Added Weather.
Added Statistics and Achievements.
New Items (Detector rail, Powered Rail, Birch and Pine/Spruce Saplings, Web).
Holding SHIFT+Click on something in a chest will immediately move the selected item(s) into your inventory and vice-versa.
Birch and Pine/Spruce trees now drop Birch and Pine/Spruce saplings, respectively.
Large performance improvements.
Breaking a double half-step drops 2 half-steps.
Crafting a ladder now produces 2 ladders.
If lightning strikes a pig, it becomes a Zombie Pigman.
If lightning strikes a Creeper, it becomes electrified and will have a much more powerful explosion.
New settings in options:
Ability to change GUI size (Small, Normal, Large, Auto).
Advanced OpenGL (Occlusion Culling: doesn't render blocks that the player can't "see", helps performance in cards that support it).
New Power armor image that looks like electricity (This file is used when a mob is hit by lightning).
Items can now be smelted with Saplings with the same smelting power as Sticks.
Dropped items in flowing water move faster than before.
Pigs that die by burning now drop cooked porkchops upon death.
Redstone dust can be placed on snow.
Wolves are more common, even in Non-Taiga/Forest biomes.
Crops hit with water now drop seeds and wheat, as opposed to just wheat.
Unarmed damage was increased to Heart.png from Half Heart.png.

Bug Fixes:

Climbing a ladder with gaps will not work anymore, but moving downwards is still possible.
On fancy graphics, the sides of grass blocks are now biome-specific and match the shade on the top.
You can now move through flowing water at previous speed.
Wolves have a better understanding of doors. They will go through doors most of the time, but will sometimes get stuck on the 3 pixel thickness of the door. They will eventually back up for another go at the opened door.
The lighting on portals and ice has been fixed (previously had triangles on the blocks) when using Smooth Lighting.
On SMP, the health of wolves are now synchronized between server and client, causing wolves to only whimper when low on health, opposed to all of the time.
Redstone in off state is red again.

New Bugs:

Creepers can make noises of other mobs.
Sometimes it rains in snow biomes.
Repetitively putting smeltable items in the furnace counts as a crafting statistic.
Achievements only work in SMP if you have already completed first achievement in Single Player.
Achievements disappear when you close and re-open the game.
FPS counter shows Chunk Updates instead of FPS, usually while generating new chunks.
The game will crash if Detector Rails are placed beside normal rails.
A crash will also occur if a normal rail is placed next to a Detector Rail that is connected to another rail.
Blocks can't be placed on snow.
If you change Advanced OpenGL to on and then back again, giant holes will appear that you can see through.
Jumping off a fence in SMP triggers an anti-flight kick.
Rain will fall through transparent blocks and stairs, acting as if there is no block there.
When hitting a grass block the destroying animation is darker on the side than the animation on top of the grass block, though only on fancy graphics.
Flowing water no longer pushes empty minecarts that fall into it.
GUI: create new world input boxes misaligned under small and normal settings.
Sometimes you might not get an achievement even if you do what it requires to get. This can usually be fixed by doing it in another world.
Locked Chest is once again obtainable through inventory editing or SMP /give commands. The chests can be placed and destroyed, but no longer show the April Fools' Day menu. When right-clicked, a locked chest will disappear after a delay. (SMP only?)
In Singleplayer, game resumes when 'Achievements' is clicked on the pause menu, instead of remaining paused.
Riding in a minecart from the south into a corner going from north to west (so it's not connected to the current track) will crash the game. Possibly also true for other directions, yet if you're going in the same corner coming from the east, it will work as usual.
Burning animation on furnaces may remain after done smelting.
Weather ambience will stop playing while using fast graphics.
Destroying a pine or birch sapling releases the particles of a 'normal' sapling.
And now stop crying, please.

From the looks of the achievement screen in-game, it seems like he's gonna add a LOT more... but I don't really see the point in these first few. Is it just a tester?

I think with the achievements its the start of something. These basic ones are meant to be the basic tutorial and for that end, they do well enough. Just because achievements were released in this patch does not mean we wont see a slew of high end achievements before the 11.11.11 release date. (prolly just testing out how well the little ones work to get a feel for how well bigger ones work.

Thing is... if they are there or not, I really dont get people getting bent out of shape over it. If you like em, it will take like 10 minutes to get this batch, if you dont, just ignore them, Its not really hard.

My complaint is that I still have yet to see weather.

Minecraft desperately needed a Tutorial. Watching Let's plays to learn how to play a game was NOT a good system at all. This is the best way to incorporate a tutorial into a Sandbox game that I've ever seen.

If you don't like them, IGNORE them. It's not like you HAVE to do them to unlock stuff or something. Just play the game how you would have; if cheevs pop out from time to time, so be it. They'll only distract you for a second. Big fucking deal! What is there to complain about? I don't get it.

I think it's a very clever system, to make Minecraft more accessible to newcomers. Good on you notch.

It's basically a proof-of-concept thing at this stage, along with a rudimentary tutorial.

I quite like them.

Also the stats section is pretty cool.

Fantastic bug fixing, still hasn't fixed the GAME BREAKING CHUNK ERRORS, PLAYERS disappearing AND INVISIBLE MOBS.

Also more bugs then fixes, fantastic testing there Notchy lard.

I like the achievements. It's a good way to make a tutorial, and the ones now are by no means the only ones there will ever be, so stop complaining.
I assume the main reason he added achievements prematurely was for bug testing, and it is a handy little tutorial for new players. Though it could definitely be expanded. Besides, the cooler parts are the weather and new minecart tracks.

I find it hilarious how people will complain about every little addition to Minecraft.

The achievements will provide a fantastic starting point for new players. As the game was before, it was basically impossible to know what to do in the game without looking at outside sources.

What? There is rain/snow in the game. What are you talking about?

I never said the update was lame, I was just commenting on the lack of solid achievements to start with. I know he'll add more but he should have started with a couple of good ones.

When I wrote this there was a problem with the weather. They fixed it after the main update.

I didn't play with the update yet so I'll take your word that the achievements are basically a tutorial right now.

But guess what? I think that's awesome. Know why? Because the game had zero direction initially. Sure it's not that tough to go browse the wiki and see all the recipies and such, but that should not be necessary. I think having a passive tutorial in the form of these achievements is pretty smart on Notch's part. And of course he's going to add to them all the time so don't worry about how simple they are now.

I was expecting stupidly long and hard achievements, or just a ridiculous amount of boring ones.

What I got was:

Press I to open your inventory.
Mine a tree block.
Create a workbench.
Create a wooden pick axe.
Create a stone pick axe.
Create a hoe.
Make bread.
Make a cake.
Kill a mob.
Get leather by killing a cow.
Ride a pig off of a cliff using a saddle.
Create a furnace.
Get a fish via fishing and cook it.
Smelt an iron block.
Travel 1km via minecart.

Nothing exciting, and the details given on how to do them are somewhat vague, so they have no use as a tutorial really. They are pointless and mostly easy. It also says "Achievement get!" When you achieve one, which doesn't even make sense.
