So, having grown up with very opinionated parents who will voice their disdain or outrage towords ads, I have to wonder: For you, do ads serve their purpose? By this I mean, have you ever felt compelled to go buy a product due to an ad? Or now are they just part of Television history, and impossible to dispel. So, when a product brand sponsors a show in order to get a commercial on air, does it effect people?

For me, I bought the songs Ladies and Gentlemen by Saliva, and Daydream by Jill Scott due to ads... but so far, thats it.

I stated once before that ads actually make me hate the product they're advertising, and I was told I didn't know what I was talking about, and how I was really encouraged to buy products by them.

I guess I don't know my brain as well as a few strangers.

But I'll say again: No. I haven't bought anything advertised on the TV, especially. As a matter of fact, I make it a point to never buy a product with an ad that pisses me off.
Aye, I find myself less inclined to buy a product with irritating advertising, and there's a whole lot of advertising that annoys me.

I especially make a point to never, ever purchase a product that uses a monkey, a talking animal, or a baby in any form of advertising.

Most ads aren't directly about buying though, they are more about creating product awareness and memorable association. All of us can think of products that are irrevocably tied to their ads.

The only ads that make me 'buy' things are movie trailers, I guess, in that they have made me interested in films I may not have given the chance to if I'd only read a review.

Ads are the reason I don't watch TV much anymore. Add up all the time you've spent in your lifetime watching ads, then think of the more productive things you could have been doing instead.

Sometimes, but certain things just throw you off.

Like this.

Look at that! I've had nightmares because of that woman!

I'll tell you what: once somebody manages to convince Billy Mays to stop yelling at me, I'll consider buying something off of an ad.

And recognizing a product is a worthy accomplishment, except when I see something and I go "Oh, that's the product with the ad that makes me want to slit my throat," it's not doing them any favors. quote]

Oh that's definitely true, but memorable does not have to mean positive, I guess. It's bizarre how annoying the shit out of people seems to be considered a valid advertising strategy. Wouldn't you want your product to be associated with a pleasant memory? I will never understand how ad creator's minds work. I hope I never do.

Neither. Will. I.
I refuse to buy any product that advertises itself by insulting my intelligence.

Hardly ever. I remember an ad once reminded me that I hadn't had Mountain Dew for a while, so I guess that counts. Otherwise, my usual reaction is indifference at best, outright contempt at worst...to the point where I don't actually remember what the product was that was being advertised. There are exceptions that I'm repressing, most likely, but otherwise I'm sort of like the anti-target audience.

Also, ads pander to the lowest common denominator of society, which is why they are cliche-riddled stereotype paloozas. I can't think of another form of media that is so racist, sexist, classist and homophobic. It reinforces such bullshit ideas about everyone. And fake accents for everyone!

That is a math term.
And because of the people it describes, I only hate math more.

But seriously, I agree whole-heartedly.
Or...if I had a heart...
You know what I mean.
Math: is there anything it can't make more hateful? The answer is of course no.

I assume you agree whole lungedly.

The only commercials that prompt me to action are the ones about other shows.

Occasionally I'll see Billy Mayes with some amazing product and I'll be like, "O cool" But I never go through the hassle of calling a phone number to buy something.

And ads for things in stores. I don't care what brand it is. I just buy whatever I can find.

EDIT: I laugh out loud whenever I hear someone say "call now" or "we don't have all day" because I know they have all F******G day. Why would they not want to accept your money after the commercial is over?

Sometimes. When I have actually wanted something like a game. Then forgot about it. Then it showed up as a commercial or what not and just clicked in my head. Oh shit, I was supposed to get that. Then I go buy it/

Occasionally.

Like all the Halo Wars plugs didn't make me want the game - they made me say "why the hell are people still talking about this?" and I looked it up and at least mentally "gave it a shot" instead of dismissing it like I normally would.

Quake Live is funded with in-game ads, and it's not like I'm gonna buy a dell computer anytime soon, or switch to 5 gum...

But ads do "hardly ever" affect me, but sometimes they do.

Also, I voted Billy Mays.
