Some people might be wondering why Half-Life has such a clear victory in the poll. I think I might know why.

Half-Life still stands in "old school" design of health packs and carrying multiple weapons. Many blame Halo for ruining this by popularising 2 weapons and regenerating health (even though the first one still had health packs) and CoD copied this from Halo.

Half-Life was (one of?) the first game that doesn't use cut scenes to tell the story and I can't think of any shooter games that do it as well as Valve games. It also trusts the player to get through, such as not using way point markers or not having a companion tell you exactly what to do for every situation. Plenty of players got stuck and frustrated with it but a lot of us appreciate that the game lets us figure out what to do.

There's more to it than that but I don't want to make this post too long. Obviously I voted for Half-Life but I like Halo and the first Modern Warfare. Oh and the only shooter I liked this year was Bulletstorm (lol anyone remember that came out?)

Half-Life for me as it's the only one of those I actually care to see another iteration on.

If this was back when The first halo was released for the PC, It would def. top my list, but...
The direction halo took saddened me greatly, as It was the first FPS to really draw me in * I was a bit younger and had not heard of HL at this point*

SO my vote went to Half Life, though I am a bit discouraged by where IT could possibly be going as well *vaporware 3:*

COD? Better that I just ignore that option even existed, though I do praise it for its ability for anyone to pick up and play.

With all due respect, The Escapist is hardly an unbiased source for such a preference.
It is sort of the internet haven for all lovers of valve, so expect an overwhelming majority of Half-Life.
Really though, it doesn't matter how much of an argument you put out, people stick with what they argue. It doesn't really matter about what's true, arguments are about who's right and who's wrong, and everyone argues what they consider "right".
TL;DR
Arguments are instant stalemates, it's not gonna help no matter how much support you get.

I had more fun with Half Life compared to the rest. I'm a Valve fanboy though, so I think my vote doesn't count.

Halo 1 was great.
After that I found them crap.
CoD I have never Enjoyed.
Half Life, despite never making it to the end (Goddamn headcrab things) was one of the best shooters I've ever played. The pacing is good, I felt like Gordon Freeman, the story was great, there was more than just shooting and running to do - it was a great game. Few games have managed to make me feel that way. It is a shame I only had it on a PS. If I had it on a PC, it would be 100% complete by now.

EDIT : Probably biased of me to point this out, but bear in mind the poll is going to be skewed on a population front; Halo is Xbox-specific, the other two are all platforms; the number of people able to play one is less than those able to play the others.
Kind of. Halo is beating CoD with, VERY predictably, Half Life beating everyone. Halo 1 and 2 came out on PC, and Halo 1 was really the only Halo I liked (Played 3, Reach and ODST at a friends).
In addition, it was the dev's IMO poor design decision to bring it out on only Xbox, and it does drag the series down because of that. If they wanted to sacrifice the number of their users to try and push the Xbox, they have to deal with reduced numbers of users having played and/or liked the game to vote for it in such situations.

your friends must not know the forum community much, we're all pretty much pc gamers. half life wins by a landslide.

OT i'm not really qualified to comment on COD because all i've experienced of it is playing local with some kids i knew that just killed me over and over. halo 3 however i have played, and while i think halo 3 is pretty damned excellent, half life all the way.

half life was the first pc fps i played after getting a computer that could run games younger then 50 years. and...god i could never play a console fps again.
i kept thinking WHY AM I SO SLOW I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS BEHIND ME

Story goes: I was eating Christmas dinner, talking about video games with my cousins (both of whom watch videos on the Escapist regularly, but have not made accounts), and brought up the gift I gave them each last year (copies of the Orange Box). They both enjoyed Portal a lot, didn't try TF2, and hated Half Life. I personally herald Half Life as the best single player FPS, with each of them advocating Halo or CoD for that position. We got to talking about the Escapist later, and they were convinced that this community would agree that either CoD or Halo is superior to Half Life. We've bet 25 bucks on the matter, so I'm gonna ask you all now: CoD, Halo, or Half Life?

NOTE: I'm not asking which is 'TEH BEST GAME EVAH', only which you consider superior based on whatever standards you prefer to use.
Combat Evolved > HL1 > CoD4:MW1 > HL2 > Halo2 > Other call of duties, since I don't play ww2 games, no, not even metro 2033 > Other Halos since they're obvious spin offs > other half lifes (including Orange box episode 2) since they were just overdramatised copies, with little or nothing to add to the story. I mean heck, the Portal *SPOILER WARNING* birds were a better addon to the game than an obvious drawn out death. Seriously JEEZ.

If I had to say anything, they probably missed out on TF2 if they'd played it before the whole youtube sceencap, or it became free, but if not, they're pretty much on the ball.

You'd be right to listen to the opinions of the public, including your friends.

Thanks for listening :D

Most definitely, though I believe it is more because the people who vote for Valve titles actually enjoy what they offer more than the others. Half Life is a more old school game. No one telling exactly where to go, no waypoints to tell you where things are, no regenerating health (Unless next to those health station things from memory). It was different to the modern Halos and CoD where you are given that objective marker or some NPC next to you tells you to head here and only one door opens that will take you there. You have regenerating health and everything will kill you quickly.
Melee weapons in either are unbalanced or don't have a ton of focus. Half Life, who can forget the trusty Crowbar? The number of times I've laughed like a madman whilst running in to kill either the NPCs or whatever friend I'm playing with at the time is only equalled by the number of times I've run in with my knife only equipped on Battlefield.
The sort of things I enjoy aren't in CoD or Halo. Half Life has them. I'd imagine it is the same for many here. It doesn't make it any less biased of course, and the OP obviously knew he was going to win, but I don't think its just blind Valve fanboyism. If Valve released a game that played the exact same as CoD or Halo, and had the same style of story and such, I doubt people would eat it up. They would complain that Valve was changing to appeal to the lowest common denominator. That isn't blind fanboyism, that's them liking the games.

HALO fails because of its bloom and "blank slate" main character.
Hold on a second, halo fails because of it's blank slate main character... compared to Gordon Freeman?

Master Chief does actually talks for starters and beyond that he has the occasional witty banter or one liner. Freeman just spends the entire conversation jumping around knocking everything over.

But even as a zealous valve fan I'm going to have to go with my first true love Halo. It is a better designed shooter for the most part though it's pacing (in all the games after CE) is not quite up to HL. The guns are more enjoyable, combat is more fluid and enemies are more interesting.

You have a few more missions dedicated to conversation, non-confrontation combat, plot and some physics puzzles (don't forget band saws) and Halo becomes a better version of HL.

I'm sure Half Life would get my vote, but sadly I have never played it so I can not honestly vote for it being better despite what I've heard. So between Halo and CoD I give my vote to Halo. I don't really have any particular reasoning for it other than I like it more.

Half Life was the base for the Team Fortress mod, which grew into TF2, which is the best multilayer FPS on the market.

I have played CoD and its a overhyped peice of garbage on its own merits, a 5 hour single player campaign, the worst community this side of the Westboro forum, and it has given the game cencorship guys more ammo than anything else.

As for Halo, well it gave birth to the Sons of Master Chief(a.k.a. X-Box Live trolls).

Based on those achievements, I would say Half Life has been the best for gaming of the options.

Its just too bad you didn't do JRPGs vs. Western RPGs, that would at least tear me between The Elder Scrolls and Kingdom Hearts.

I'm not voting because I don't think it's fair. I feel like you're asking which game would be voted best by the community here. The answer is HL2: it's considered to be, objectively, the best FPS game of all time by people who don't even like it.

There's no denying that as a whole this community would probably support your position that HL2 is the best game, especially as everyone here tends to dislike Halo or CoD on principal. Although I'm noticing that as that's become the popular view among self-righteous Internet cynics more people are becoming moderate toward those games.

OT: I had the most fun playing Halo. I think CoD is one of the most competent shooters around with solid mechanics and polished game play. I've not played HL2 because I don't care.

EDIT: Edited grammar for clarity.

Half Life is brilliant singleplayer. It's immersive, the characters and voice acting are good even if Gordon Freeman is a blank slate, and the enemy designs are interesting (although I was sad to see so many Xen aliens get dropped from HL2). Also, puzzles! Exploration! Healthkits! Gravity Guns! The vehicle sections were underwhelming, but I've never played a good vehicle section in a singleplayer game before.

Halo is possibly the best local multiplayer game I've ever played. Why? Customisability. You can tweak out the settings so that you're basically playing a Ghostbusters video game, or a zombie game, or give everyone unlimited sticky grenades and a massive laser cannon, you can cover the map in tanks, or aircraft, or turrets, and Forge in Halo 3 and Reach lets you do this mid game. Online, with standard-issue assault rifles, basic TDM rules and crappy vehicles? No fun whatsoever. But if you're playing a custom mode on the couch with a couple of friends, or over a network with people you know, you'd struggle to find a better game.

COD has one main advantage: customisable classes. I love being able to pimp out my character-dude and his guns/equipment to suit my playstyle, and the fast-paced action on most COD game modes is a good reason to stick around. Plus, you're guaranteed to find players. COD singleplayer is similar to Uncharted singleplayer: nothing groundbreaking story or gameplay-wise, but solid, spectacular and heaps of fun if you're not looking for an intellectual challenge.

Overall, I like Half Life the most, but that's because I'm a fan of singleplayer gameplay, and to me Halo's dragged on forever and COD's was a series of identical, meaningless firefights.

Halo takes my vote.

CoD peaked at CoD4 and has never matched it since. The campagin of CoD 2 was amazing but not very replayable.

Half-Life was fun but not really my niche. I have friends who love the game and I do get called a dumbass for not really enjoying it.

Halo has had good games and "not as good games but never shit"(personal favorite being Reach while the worst was either 3 or ODST). Certainly nothing worth GOTY but I can replay all of the games (even ODST) again and again.

You arent being very fair to your cousins here, after this is the Escapist, theres not really much doubt about which will win. Im gonna say CoD simply because of the sheer fun I get out of it
