Halo for me.
Never really played CoD except at some friends place trying online a few minutes.
Halo series is great (1 and 2 being "TEH BEST GAEMZ EVAHHh!!!!11" (joking aside))
And the little I played Half Life a long time ago I really can't remember.
So my vote goes for Halo (I think it is Halo(1) we are talking about here).

HALO fails because of its bloom and "blank slate" main character.
Hold on a second, halo fails because of it's blank slate main character... compared to Gordon Freeman?

Master Chief does actually talks for starters and beyond that he has the occasional witty banter or one liner.
A pretty cool guy that doesn't afraid of anything?

What does MC do when he's not sexing Cortana or killing aliens though? Freeman has a personality.
Freeman just spends the entire conversation jumping around knocking everything over.
Depends on how you play him. Charlie Chaplin gave a number of great performances without speaking.

For Multiplayer, HALO has the edge - considerably I'd say. For Single player, Follow the Freeman.

I'm glad to see that A) Half Life is winning, and B) CoD's being beaten by Halo by this point.

Aaand...cue the flame war.

WAIT!? WHAT? Freeman has personality? My dog has more personality than Freeman. He is the most blank slate you could possibly be. He does nothing, he does literally stand there and do what ever people tell him to do, he nevers disagree's, he never makes any suggestion, he doesn't do anything but fallow people's orders.

At least the Master Chief actually talks and interacts with the people around him, which personally made me feel like I was part of the world. When someone like Gordan doesn't respond, it makes me feel like this whole thing could have happened without me.

Gordan Freeman is literally there just for the player to control and move him along. He could have been some random person off of the street and the game would have made no difference. (except for maybe HL1, where the fact that he is a scientist does take into account for what happens, but in HL2, Gordan could have been anyone and the game would have given the same effect.)

Comparing Gordan Freeman to MC is like comparing shit to shit that is slightly more wet. They have no personalities, get over it.

Not necessarily. Why do people place Halo's MP on a pedestal and disregard its SP? The HL nerds were sweating at their desks when the news of Halo hit them, then they proceeded to rampage the internet swearing that FPSes cannot be played on a gamepad. And look where we sit today...

The shining beacon of light was in HL2 and suddenly the PC nerds slammed down their gavels and declared it the greatest thing since orgasms. Which it was not. I side with the HL purists in that HL2 never lived up to HL.

Also, if there is anything that we know to be true, its that popularity does not equal quality.

Silly question I think, two of the games are commonly seen as generic FPSs that get re-released every year or so whereas the other is considered a genre redefining masterpiece by many pc gamers. Unfortunately despite this I voted for CoD, not because I think it is the better game but simlpy because I was never a huge fan of either of the others (well not a huge fan of CoD either but moreso) and CoD for me has brought more enjoyment then the other games combined. So that is my answer even if I'm hated for it. I'm sure if the question was asked on a PS3 forum (if such things exist) you would recieve a very different answer.

Halo. I much prefer the feel of it and the general gameplay mechanics, as well as Halo 2 being one of my all-time favorite games. CoD is a good, solid serious, but is a bit bland to me. Half Life is an incredible series and I love it to death on every level, but I have to give it to Halo, which I loved on a lot of levels as well and which has a multiplayer that I really liked a lot.

If you're talking about the multiplayer, Halo or CoD are both excellent depending on what you like. Halo has a slightly more arcade style multiplayer, and CoD with a more "realistic" motif. However, in terms of single player, neither can get anywhere close to Half-Life 2 (CoD 4's single-player was good but not HL good). Half-Life 2, is hands-down one of the best firt-person shooters of all time in terms of its single-player experience. I personally can't comprehend anyone hating Half-Life 2 who has played it.

Uhh, I choose CoD because it's the best shooter out of all of those. Half life is a good game, yet the gameplay hasn't aged well and Halo is pretty slow paced.

Yes, we all understand that it's the "cool" thing to be a cynic on this site, but people tend to forget that CoD has stayed where it is because it's still one of the best at what it does.
Well that's a matter of personal preference I'm simply explaining that those two games attract a certain age group and mindset, if I remember correctly the average age on CoD is 13 - 17.

And it's true CoD does what it does best in class, that is casual simplicity, or in politically correct terms accessibility.

Best single player FPS? Portal. But, since that doesn't count, as it's already universally loved by all the nine gods, Half Life takes the prize, as it remains one of the tightest marriages of story and gameplay around. It's immersive, gratifying, and well executed, and while CoD and Halo both have their moments, there's a reason even the hint of Half Life 3 had the internet abuzz, whereas the announcement of a new Halo or CoD title can be repeatedly met with "Oh. Another one. Cool, I guess."

Half life is the most well thought out and well put together game in my opinion. The physics puzzles are clever, and the alian shooter/zombie survival/action shooter/squad commander combination that is half life is just superb! Who ever forgets having to jump across boxes in a flooded room to avoid electrocution, or getting across the desert without alerting the Antlions! Or the first time they got caught by one of those things that attach themselves to the ceiling, and then paniced as they tried to get away!

Man I want to play them again!!

Valve kicks Bungie and Infinity Ward/Treyarch's ass any day of the week and twice on Sundays. No contest.

I have to wonder if the OP cunningly picked this forum very specifically as the place to settle the bet. Admirably devious, if so.

Half-Life is a classic fps.
Halo is a console arena shooter.
Call of Duty is a modern fps.

It's like comparing apples to oranges to bananas. They all have their strengths and faults. They were all well made as specified by their developers. Half-Life and Halo have much larger universes, but Call of Duty was (at once) grounded in reality.

The only real comparable difference is the online community.

Actually, out of the three, Half-Life is my least favourite. Perhaps my expectations were a bit high thanks to the incredibly irritating fanbase, but it just wasn't all that special, and I've always found Valve games to be a bit cold and clinical.

I do quite like Halo, although I've never really gotten into the series. From what I've played of Halo 1 and Reach at a friend's, they were a lot of fun.

I voted for CoD, because I've never enjoyed online multiplayer FPS as much as I did playing WaW. I play splitscreen MW2 (and MW3 now) at a friend's, and I have to say it has the best splitscreen gameplay of any fps (it's sadly overlooked now). CoD 4 was a masterpiece, but I've always found the campaigns of all of them entertaining. I think the biggest reason is how solid the gameplay and the engine are. It's always so smooth, and most of the guns are a joy to fire.

I'm assuming we are talking about the whole franchise for each of these or this makes no sense at all.

Not that that would really change my answer as it's clearly Half Life for oh so many reasons.

I've never played Half-Life so this'll just be between COD and Halo.

I will always love Halo 3 for the multiplayer and it will remain my favourite of the series. Reach didn't quite top it though but the forge mode was pretty cool. The campaigns of either game weren't brilliant but alright to play the first time through.

CoD's only redeeming factor is Nazi Zombies which is incredibly fun to play and almost changes my opinion of the franchise as a whole... then MW3 got released and made me wonder what asinine morons could possibly be in charge of Infinity Ward and Activision.

Halo wins this one.

I probably would have enjoyed Half-Life more if both it and it's sequel weren't so overhyped. I just felt it was a letdown for what I had been led to expect. But since I didn't enjoy it, be it because of the game or the fans, I'm going to say Halo is the favourite. The aesthetics are great, it's fun, I like the characters and campaign and I enjoy the multiplayer.

Are you talking about a particular game in the series?
If you're talking about any of the CoDs since they started getting called CoD, then certainly not. The old ones wern't bad, but certainly not best game ever material.
I haven't really played much Halo, but the bits I have played (only ever in Co-op) were really good.
But I'd have to say the most experience I've had with any of those 3 series is Half-Life. I had never played any valve games until a month or two ago when one of my housemates brought up the Orange Box, I played a few hours of Half-life 2 when I had free time(which I didn't have much of) but its a pretty good single player FPS, but I really didn't find it enjoyable for the reasons everyone seems to herald it for. I know you're not looking for reviews of the games so I'll simply say its certainly one of the best single player FPS's I've played but there are much better and I haven't really played the others enough...
