That was more of a broad statement since it's people outside America I hear this nonense from.
I'm friends with people outside the country who think NY is like a never ending Die Hard movie with shoot outs happening hourly. Our Scottish friend's wife wouldn't come to New York because she was worried about shootings. Which I think is funny, but I know a few who say we're all baby eating war mongers.

There's also people who think we love war, I've yet to meet someone here that loves war, I'm sure there is but I'm sure any country today has a person who wants to see a war with another country.

You need to get your facts straight.the Holocaust was not the reason the U.S joined the war.
it is a well known fact that the allies knew at some point during the war about what was going on in the death camps but did nothing to stop them(such as bombing them).
some say that the U.S intentionality avoided bombing the camps because they didn't want people back home to think they are fighting this war because of the Jews.


Don't have a solid opinion on the rest of the matter discussed so i cant really contribute

The war was actually won by the Russians, wasn't it? They were the ones who invaded Berlin, if I'm not mistaken. But if you're being serious then the defeat of Nazi Germany was a collaborative effort from the Allies.

I don't think a lot of americans have a "disillusion". It's just bad stereotyping, at least i hope so.
But WW2 was a very complicated time. As a person who lives in a country that was occupied by the Soviets, the Germans, and then the soviets again , i know that both sides were "not good". The memory of both still lingers, and what pisses me off the most is that a lot of Russian people think that they saved our country from the Germans. Yes, they made the Germans leave, but they were just another country that took control of us. Some see their country truly as a hero that saved us. But that's what the schools there teach, i guess. Just another point of view.

You seem to have a lot of illusions yourself of Britains importance in the war. The true praise belongs to the russians who killed over 70% of german forces, and where the ones to invade Berlin.

I wouldn't exactly give them praise for it, considering it was only after Hitler tried to invade Russia, and this is Stalin we're talking about - a man whose body count surpasses Hitler's.

Would that be the same pacific theatre that not only included Americans, but also Brits, Australians, New Zealanders, the Dutch and Canada (not to mention all the smaller colonies of said nations, based in the area)?

Don't you dare make the mistake of thinking the Pacific was a U.S. only front. I personally know British veterans that still bear the physical and mental scars of the hell that was the war in the Pacific.

I guess the Brits that were in Bhurma aren't referred to as 'The Forgotten Army' for nothing eh :/

If you think of the vietnam war you think WHAT THE FUCK WERE WE THINKING?? When you think of Hitler you think of 6 million Jews that were killed, and that needed to be stopped. The rest of the wars (vietnam and iraq especially) were born out of paranoia. paranoia for communists at first with vietnam after the cold war, and with Iraq after 9/11 Iraq was a fucking mistake i mean they had nothing to do with 9/11 and the only reason that there may have been terrorists there is because WE were there blowing up their country. So basically I totally agree with the original thread, our government and the idiots in control of the media are essentially not allowed to talk about anything else because it just plain makes them look bad... stupid fucks.

I just was observing that your facts are all wrong and I felt that this was directly correlated to you agreeing with OP. I didn't even realize you had misspelled, I don't believe you're an idiot (just misinformed), and because wars tend to be big news stories, I don't think it fits why you feel the media covers them.

Also, when one bases an opinion on false information, I don't feel I gave too much of a strong reaction.

I meant by WWII that when you think back you remember that there were good reasons for fighting right? We got into the war with Japan first when they bombed Pearl Harbor. They didn't actually know about the Jews until they found them, so they went in without knowing but yes you are correct.

US sent supplies to Britian (and China)
Britian won the air war keeping themselves from German control
Russia fought the Germans the most destroying alot of the German army and keeping them occupide so that a second front could be opened
US/British troops land in france
Allied Victory in Europe

As for the thread, I am American and I do not believe that we won the war by ourself or that we were the heroes. Everyone had a part, and everyone worked together for it. It's a World War for a reason.

Personally, I don't think it's right to dole out praise based solely on how much of an impact a country made in the war effort. Are you going to tell Polish veterans their sacrifice meant nothing because their country was the first to be knocked out? Are American vets supposed to be looked down upon because the U.S. didn't join the war until 1942? Are German vets supposed to be treated like monsters because they fought on the "wrong" side?

Please stop with the self-righteous chest-pounding, everyone. Instead let's acknowledge the incredible human cost of the war and the sacrifices that were made regardless of nationality.

Personally being English I feel their involvement was instrumental in ending the war a lot quicker but I think the true praise belongs to British and Canadians, but more so the French, those who faught the war from the bloody begining to the bloody end. Their country is a living memento to the fallen, all over and I mean all over France you can find graveyards and a memorials to all the men whom fought and died in that horrendous war

i think you forgot to mention the USSR, they lost more troops than all other allies and axis combined the russians played a huge part in the war and they always go unnoticed because of the events after the war.

Naaa you guys would have still won ww2 without us. i don't think you would have liked the conditions tho. Two scenarios:

One, Hitler still alive and still a decent sized germany looking to recover, you tell me the future of that.

Two, Russia taking over much more of europe... I think the outcome of this one would be even more interesting.
