Well, stem cells. Chances are that you've heard of them, and know the (theoretical) possibilities of them.

So onto the bulk of the discussion: what do you think of them? What do you think of Obama's allowence of research into them? If you have a condition that could be helped or cured by them, would you use them? Personally, while I have no objection to the use of stem cells, I think there should be more research into the way they work and the effects of them before any major widespread use of them is adopted. And I'm not sure if I would use them to help treat or cure my diabetes, as I can deal with it, even if it is a nuscience sometimes.

I'm fairly sure I can guess what the outcome will be, but you never know. Also, I know there has been a thread about this before, but the most recent one I found was started in April.

I don't have much reason to use them. My singularity manipulators will virtually make all current technology severely obsolete.

[Edit]: However to those who do need them in treatment, I think it is critical to make sure they are available. My singularity research may take longer than intended.

I support the stem cell research.

If the cells can become anything, that means people can regenerate arms and eyes and health bars and stuff!

It might also prevent senility, by restoring brain cells!

[small]Congrats on 2000![/small]

I voted for the first one although I'm quite likely to be biased since I can most likely afford to wait for tests before I'll need that kind of care.

I've heard that diabetes could be cured by using stem cells, so for purely selfish reasons, I'm all for them.

I say use them ASAP so we know what can and cannot be cured by them.

The more you know!

Stem cells are great, they can replace burn victim's skin, regrow limbs, even... repair damaged spinal chords.

So yeah, once they've perfected them, it will be brilliant.

I support research into them and I think it's great that Obama allows research into them.

I won't use them until I know of the side-effects, though.

All of the above :D

Also, they've managed to drastically improve the efficiency of turning your own skin cells back into stem cells [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8311055.stm], hopefully removing the need for foetus(s) at all in the future, and drastically reducing the amount of flak they get from various religious and moral groups...

YAY!

Congrats on your 2000th?

I'm for them. Just make sure you know what you're doing before you apply them to other people.

I support the research but I would only use the results after tonnes of tests and experiments.

I'm for them, but not for the medical reasons. Yes, they're a nice bonus, but for me, it's about the ethical issue that crosses the scientific one--At what point should we stop trying to create ourselves? And what's interesting is how that entire argument practically hinges on Stem Cells. Should we use the cells to grow muscle and bone, to better understand their structure? How about brain cells, that we might restore brain injuries from accidents, trauma, or drugs? What about for reinitializing dormant cells, that they may continue to produce, replenish, and replicate, feasibly extending our lives much farther than a mere century? What about in vitro gene manipulation, deciding a future appearance, height, tendency of weight, hair, skin, and eye color, ability to process information faster, diseases to be rid of down the line?

Only by coming upon the line can we ask ourselves if we should cross it, and the only way to get there is to push forward.

How very revealing. How do you feel towards cake?

i think that if the military can get billions of dollars to invest in their biochemical weapons research, why shouldn't they allow stem cell research? sure, it's controversial, but so is every other country-financed system; to bring just a few examples: military, banks, health care, (public) transportation...
i think considering that nothing can come from NOT doing something, if stem cell research was given the same opportunities as e.g. the aforementioned institutions there'd surely SOMETHING good to come out of it.
That being said, i do not like the prospect of things getting out of hand, accidental and/or intentional mutations, "designer children", these things should be controlled and averted, but i wish no other from, say, the weapons research guys (keep in mind that we have the potential amount of atom bombs to nuke the whole planet to hell and back)

Well without my eyes I can't read your post, so that should rob you of any satisfaction you may have got from that.

Pah.
(Oh, and hooray for diabetes)

You would be wrong!
I can get satisfaction from very small, insignificant things.
Such as being quoted.
Yes.
That makes me happy.
And hooray indeed.

Here, have a piece.

Sorry, cake not available at this Time. Please try again soon. Have a nice day!
I'm quite inclined to wonder on the connected nature of those two pieces--beyond that, doesn't cake tend to put a cripple into things? Say, too much cake, with that whole blood sugar regulation aspect?

Meh.
For the fragile people, yes.
As a reference, the target sugar level is 120.
I've been beyond what the meter can register (600+) and down to 29 without passing out, so I'm pretty sure I can handle the cake.
Plus, insulin pumps fucking RULE.

You have diabetes?.

I really don´t care about them.I don´t hate them or anything. It's just the fact that no one i know needs the cure stem cells provide.
