So yesterday I was watching a dubbed version of full metal alchemist on youtube to see if i want the DVD (dont worry i support the original artist)

After watching the dub's i switched to sub's and noticed a couple of comments, they went somthing like this

First Guy: OMG why is this episode subbed while the others are dubbed, thats ga
Other Guy: Real fans only watch subbed versions, even if they cant understand it

Now in my oppinion i disagree I prefer the english dubbs for FMA because i prefer the voice actors, when i watch Ghost in the shell i watch it dubbed because the translation is better

So whats your oppinion Dubb's or Subb's

Also do you think that comment is correct "true fans watch subb's, even if they cant understand it"

Depends. Usually (no weeboo) I prefer the subs. They are often better acted, makes sense to hear japanese in an english setting and fits far better with the animation. However some anime I watch only in dubs (ie Bebop) because the english voice acting is equal if not better.

So generally I watch it in subs as I think that's nearest the intended experience however if the dub is good I'll watch it.

Horribly inconclusive, I know.

I've always watched it with the subtitles and original audio track, I think the thing with me was when I grew up (like when I was 7) watching Sailor Moon and the dub version cut out over an hour and a half of the anime as well as warping the english version so that noone died, they all just disappeared.

After that I refused to watch anything which could have changed the original because I don't want people to disappear if they were meant to die, it ruins the whole emotion of the piece. Watching the two endings of the first season are SO different, and they give off completely different emotions and atmospheres and I just couldn't believe it.

So I haven't watched stuff dubbed since, unless its Studio Ghibli and happens to be on TV because I can't change it.

But I don't think it really matters if other people want to watch it dubbed, that's up to them. I just know my reasons why I do it!

Depends on the anime. Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex have great english dubs, while something like Love Hina and Full Metal Panic have terrible dubs. It's whichever I can stand to listen to.

My option isn't there :(

I prefer subs nearly all the time American voice actors nearly always screw up somthing be it the voice doesn't mach the character, the VA doesn't emote enough, the VA emotes too much, theVAspeakstoofastinordertofititintothescene, the. voice. actor. speaks. too. slowley, hearing an american accent coming out of what is obstesivly a Japanese school girl just feels weird, they've censored or bowelderized it and/or the voice actor can just be plain bad

Now not all of these are the voice actors fault sometimes it's bad directing, a bad translation or just that the origanal doesn't translate well but with subs and translators notes I feel I get the better version,
that's not to say I hate all dubs there are a few that I can go either way with and one or two I actually prefer(though not many).

Also when there's a gender ambiguous character/crossdresser is on they usually give them a very obvious male/female voice where in Japanese it can be harder to tell if only because many young males are played by female voice actors.

well... if its Studio Ghibli, I've already watched it two or three times. So then i watch it in Japanese, just to see if there are any differences and which one I prefer. I dont really mind, however I find it harder to take the characters seriously. I dont know, maybe its just because they all sound funny speaking Japanese...

It depends if the English dub is a butchery.
I've watched far more animé subbed than dubbed, but there are some good dubs out there, such as FMA.
Then there are also horrific dubs, such as the ones for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which I refuse to watch unless subbed >.>

eh, most of the time, i find the subber's get lazy, saying the same thing, just differently, or a short form.

i don't know japanese that well, but you can tell when the subber's get lazy, or do a rush job after a few years of watching :p

I don't watch anime. But I'll apply my feelings from foreign films to this.

I prefer subtitles.

You get the subtlety and beauty of the original language, but you get the exposition and script in English.

It often depends on what I see the anime in first. For example, I know that BeBop has a really good English dub but because I saw it in Japanese first, watching it in English seems alien. The only anime where I've seen both sub and dub and don't mind either is Full Metal Alchemist as it's one of the few animes where the overall feel of the Japanese script is ported over in the dub.

depends, most cases the subs are generally well done (there are quite a few good subbers out there now) while i do watch with subs if i can get a decent english then i'll listen to that. Hellsing, Ghost in the shell are two i've watched and like the english dubs, while i can't stand the naruto and one peice dubs and Dragon ball is hit and miss on some characters.

Being fairly good at japanese I usually prefer the subs as they both train my japanese and just work better imo.
Lips being out of sync is painful to watch, specially in original languages as it's not hard to make it look somewhat realistic.
But there are also some animes where the original voice acters either suck horribly or just make me cringe - One such example would be Goku from the Dagonball series. It's one of few animes I prefer dubbed as his voice makes me want to strangle myself >_>

True anime fans watch anime. That is all it takes to be a true anime fan is watch anime. All this bickering over language preference is silly.

It completely depends on the anime, some animes sound way better dubbed like Ghost in the Shell for one example, but most of the animes I watch I watch them with subs no matter what.

I prefer the subs because the dubbers tend to phone it in way too much to take it serioiusly.. some are good, like FMA, Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, but about 80% of western voice actors are terrible. I will watch dubs, but only on reccomendation

I prefer dubs so I can look at the action, not the subtitles. That being said, I usually end up watching subs simply because subs are much farther in the series, and I'm not waiting for the dub. However, there are some dubs that are just plain bad, so I watch subs.

It's all a matter of convenience for me.

I don't really have a preference. I can watch a subbed or dubbed anime. As long as I know what they are saying than I can watch it. When I do watch a dubbed anime DVD I do turn the subtitles on. I do this whenever I watch a film.

I almost always prefer the Japanese voice actors, the English ones tend to sound like whiny little bitches. I have no idea why this is... In some cases I do watch anime with dubs but that's very rare.
