Fooly cooly....ahhh the fun i had with that show. But most of the anime I view, and I say this shamelessly, is hentai. As for "normal" anime, Gundam was my fucking favorite show from age 7 to present, and by gundam I mean the 0079-0081 era when it was (in my opinion) GOOD. Inuyasha was another favorite of mine.

I love it but I can say that I don't love the fans usually. We're a crazy bunch and most of the more out there people can take it a little too far. But I love it because there's always something interesting in a story and anime is mostly stories from Japan. It's just another version of a cartoon. The fact of the matter is that it's the same no matter what closed minded people think. As for my favorites I like Inuyasha, Ruroni Kenshin, Fullmetal Alchemist, Tokyo Babylon, .hack//sign, Cardcaptor Sakura, anything by CLAMP, and I guess I'll add Excel Saga and Ultra Maniac too but I have to be in the right mood for them.

P.S. forgot Death Note, though I only read the manga it still deserves a shout out.

Anime is a hateful, hateful thing, an abomination, a pox on the face of the world, a never ending plague of the foulest, most vile, scabrous filth ever to defile creation.

That said, one or two manga's are ok and I suppose a couple of anime's (films, never series')based on them are ok, but the rest are the darkest form of evil, summoned straight from the pits of Hades etc etc.

I especially dislike the incredibly exaggerated emotions and the repeating animations when animepeople walk/speak/do something.

Depends on the show, really. Death Note was one of the most gripping things I've watched in years, but I can't stand Dragonball Z or harem animes, that sort of thing. Serial Experiments Lain, Death Note, and Haibane Renmei I could watch over and over, mind.

The way I see it, it's no inherently better or worse than any other form of entertainment, and as such obeys Sturgeon's law ("Ninety percent of everything is crud") to the letter. I can appreciate the good shows out there, like Death Note, FMA and the like, and even understand the people out there who don't really "get" the aesthetics or wathever.

The people who pretend there's some kind of hidden meaning behind it and meet any kind of criticism with "you don't get it" get on my nerves though. It's just cartoons.

I am not a big anime fan, but I do love gundam (Except the Cosmic Era shows) So that is a bit of a paradox.

I watched all Gundam Series (Except G Saviour and the 2nd half of V gundam, need to fix that) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Harui s1 + s2. The rest does not interest me at all.

I loooove the Universal Century Gundam series' (basically the first 3 and Char's Counterattack), and I thought that SD Gundam was absolutely eff-in' hilarious, with self-parody on the level of House of the Dead.

With earlier anime being hand-drawn, imagine having to draw frame by frame. They re-use frames because it's convenient and it works.

I have never really watched anime to be honest so I can't really say if I like or not. The talk surrounding it and those who watch it has always put me off even though im sure most of it is not true.

I used to love it, but I think I'm beginning to outgrow it. I'm still reading some series, but it's just a few I really want to know how ends and some that I just love that much.

The talk surrounding it is just from peoples personal experience. I think you should try out some shows and make your own opinion it's hard to trust other people with stuff like this just because of the shear amount of variety in anime chances r u will find something u like whether it be giant robots, war dramas, comedy, mystery, straight action etc.

I generally like any kind of anime that has distinct, well thought out characters (or at least really cool characters, or character driven story/plot), quiet retrospective kinds, and awesome plot kinds. I guess in anime/manga speak I like seinen mostly, with a few drips of josei and some light shounen on the side.

(however, shoujo is my super secret vice, so shhhh, don't tell anyone I know irl. :x)

Some of my favorites: Mushishi, Cowboy Bebop (like you didn't see that coming), Darker Than Black (I blame Hei for being so damn sexy), Haibane Renmei, Miyazaki/Ghibli misc (Princess Mononoke being on the top), GiTS, Serei no Moribito.

Ones on my to-watch list that look quite promising: Monster, Mononoke, Gankutsuou.

Edit: Krat said this: "Anime/Manga is alot like Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels if you ask me.

The vast majority is a steaming pile of pig crap but then you come across an Enders Game or Code Geass and it all becomes worth the effort of looking the the diamond in the rough."

And I cannot agree enough. I experience much pain with that sci-fi/fantasy novel industry thing, simply due to the fact that for every 'omg did not see THAT coming' moment, there is more of the 'wtf is this? Is this. . .is this a fantasy ROMANCE novel?!' or 'Wow, another series about high fantasy that sounds exactly like that other generic martin/goodkind/brooks/tolkien ripoff of a ripoff, or hell, of Lovecraft,' which is even worse because 9/10 times they suck worse than the high fantasy ripoffs.

Anime is the exact same. Yes, there are some anime with depth. No, you are not going to find them unless you dig, and unless you know how to dig. Chances are, if you ask someone else for some 'good ' anime, they're going to recommend you something you think is crap. Hell, my most favoritist anime might be nothing more than boogers to you. That's cool for you to not like it, but do know that *my* favorite anime/type of anime (and everyone else's ) prolly isn't even a fraction of what you can find out there.

And that is why I like anime so much. It's as wide and diverse a medium as fiction books. I'm sure without the sheer amount of depth (I would insult Neal Stephenson, China Mieville, Neil Gaiman, Lovecraft, Orson Scott Card etc etc etc if I even suggested a thing), but there is *some * depth, and I don't always want Stephenson for entertainment, so anime is nice for that middle ground.

Plus sometimes I like looking at pictures. Oooh, shiny.

My problem with Japanime is that 95% of it falls somewhere between Bizarre Jelly 5 and Princess Robot Bubblegum.
Also; why do Japanese cartoons get their own special name, but cartoons from other countries don't?
No it really doesn't. You just haven't watched enough by the looks of your ignorant post.

Anyway, back to topic. I like quirky animes with a colorful cast of characters. I prefer shonen, but I do expand my horizons to other genres.

As many has probably already said, it depends on what you see first (first impressions are important after all) and what you like. I'm an avid anime watcher, and I can say that yes, there is a whole lot of crap out there. Then again, even this depends on what you/the person in question like. It's the same with all things, some people think farmville on facebook is crap and can't understand how people can actually waste time on it, while the ones that play it and like/love it. People shouldn't judge people for their hobbies or what they like anyway.

OT: As I mentioned before, I like anime (might aswell say that I love it) and it's very hard for me to mention one that I see as a favorite.. But lets say Kino no tabi, Aria the animation and One piece. Maybe.

There are a few that I really like a few that I really don't. But I'll also say I have trouble taking most western cartoons seriously. Of course that goes for a lot of anime too but there are some that I think are very well done.

Though really American cartoons seem to be Disney, FamilyGuy/Southparketc, and shows for kids under 10.

Pom Poko was the greatest thing I ever saw. EVER.. But seriously.... It really depends on the anime.
