Could you give an example of realistic animation? Most of the anime I've seen is much better animated than any western animation I've seen. There are some fairly realistic animes out there.LunaticFringe said:I've tried to watch anime multiple times, and sometimes I like the plots, but I just can't get over the art style, it drives me nuts for some reason. That's disputable. A lot of anime that gets exported from Japan then advertised is in that category, mainly because a lot of people still seem to think that animated = for kids. Which is wrong. Because about 10% of anime is that stuff called "hentai," so by your obervation that leaves just 5% for stuff like Serial Experiment: Lain, .hack//sign, Ghost in the Shell (Which I love), Mushi-Shi, Gasaraki, Straight-Jacket, Darker Than Black and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. But obviously titles liek these occupy more than 5% of anime.Souplex said:My problem with Japanime is that 95% of it falls somewhere between Bizarre Jelly 5 and Princess Robot Bubblegum.
I think the reason is the anime is a style of it's own. But even that's wrong, just look at all the styles grouped under animate, you'll see there are many different variations.Souplex said:Also; why do Japanese cartoons get their own special name, but cartoons from other countries don't?
It used to be. Now it's aimed at 11 year-olds.Demented Teddy said:I like it.
It's basically cartoons directed at the older pupulation.

What I specifically don't like about anime, is that typical anime crap: ridiculous exaggerated facial expressions, those flashy backgrounds when something happens, stupid motions and overreactions. No thanks, I'll stick to more mature anime.
FYI, not every anime uses the same kind of art. Far from it, actually. Anime can range from:Spinozaad said:I don't just hate it. I hate it with a furious passion. Why? I hate every bit of it, but mostly the art.
God, the ludicrous, ugly art.

There's quite a bit of difference in anime styles.

Woah, mind telling me what the second one is? The first looks a bit too...Japanese, but the second picture is pretty interesting.Sacman said:Here is a couple more

Nope, never. Just looked them up on youtube. Those ARE fairly realistic, maintaining proper human proportions and mostly human faces without far too much stylization.Sacman said:Ralph Bakshi American Pop, Fire and Ice. ever heard of them?
Batman TAS does look significantly different than anime. It can take some getting used to a new animation style; it probably takes a good plot to hook you, and then you'll get used to it soon enough. Of course if you never attract the interest in watching an anime in the first place, you'll never start watching and thus never get used to it.LunaticFringe said:I suppose I should have put 'realistic' in the quotes because I meant that over-the-top Western kind of animation, little eyes, big bodies, stuff like the old Batman series (although that's somewhat cartoony in it's own right) it's just the stuff I grew up with, most anime character's features and expressions just seem really weird to me for some reason.
Those are some awesome parodies (on certain animé genres, although it's probably aimed on animé as a whole), although that Bizarre Jelly 5 thing is very creepy too.Souplex said:My problem with Japanime is that 95% of it falls somewhere between Bizarre Jelly 5 and Princess Robot Bubblegum.
I know the Yu-Gi Oh one, but where are the others from?Cowabungaa said:-snip-
