I saw another user post a math question so I thought I'd ask one too.

You may have heard this before it's pretty popular.

3*(1+2)= ? <----- not that

Edit: Sorry I'm really tired the real question is

6/2(1+2)=? <------- this

I would assume its 9, but I suspect some shenanigans hidden behind such an easy question...

I've always been taught that brackets outrank everything, then its */+- in descending order.

Still, I can't see a way to make 1 from that, 5 without the brackets, but not 1. 3/(1+2)=1 tho.

I should be studying trigonometry, but instead I'm doing multiplication? Oh well, still counts as studying >:3

6/2(1+2)
Lets see. PEMDAS is the order of operations, right?
So it is 6/2(3) which is 6/6 which is 1.

Or maybe I just suck at math.

Edit: yeah, I probably suck at math.

It's 9 I believe, also fuck math.

Fuck college algebra too. Worthless information as far as my major was concerned, such a waste of my time. Yeah, i'm bitter about it 2 years later.

It's nine. Multiplication and division get same priority because they're essentially the same thing. You could easily rewrite this to 6(1+2)/2, and in fact you probably should.

PEMDAS is just a mnemonic to give a general idea, it's not (And really can't be) 100% accurate.
(Multiplication and division have same priority as does addition and subtraction)

You need two more options for the poll.

-Equation is badly written and ambiguous
-I hate threads that have already been done

Am I the only one that remembered the order of operations with "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally"? :p

come on people
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
3(3)
9
order of operations, when you come across both multiplication and division in the same step you do what appears first from left to right.

Nope, I do too.

9, btw. As has been said, multiplication and division are two sides of the same coin, and are therefore given equal priority. Because of that, the operations are performed in the order which they show up.

The answer is 1. For it to be 9 the equation would have to be written (6/2)(1+2).

Hooray for badly written math equations!

Wow, alot of people forget you multiply before you divide. Its 1 people.

6/2(3), you multiply the 2 and 3, THEN 6/6 is 1.

The solution is to write a less ambiguous expression...
Also, as it is written, everything to the right of the / is in the denominator so ?=1

Whoa-ho, facebook had this poll and only 58% of people got it right (185K votes). Looks like the escapist community is a litttle bit smarter.

And for those who still are like whaa?
Look at it like..
6/1 * 1/2 * 3/1

On other note, I remembered PEMDAS by...please execute my dreadful aunt sally o_o maybe my math teacher was weird
