I am indeed a student of Game Development. Hopefully I will eventually make my way into sound design, but I'm willing to start and perhaps even stay in programming.

I am a highpoly modeler, at most I would be working in an inhouse animation studio for prerendered cutscenes as creating highpoly models for normal maps to be used in a game is a whole other beast.

Not at all. I occasionally dabble in programming for the fun of it, and I have made a few things that could be considered playable in a very bare bones way. I'm not creative at all and only program as an intellectual excercise.

I like messing with pygame and SDL in general because it's easy to get some coloured shapes on the screen.

Well I'm doing my university in video games development, which also comes with a diploma in project management, which as much as I hate it, is very handy for your CV. Personally I wish to get into the art side of things, as I've always wanted to draw, but I'm awful at it, so this is the route for me, and honestly 3D is the logical step considering how much I love games and checking out the environment.

Modelling and Texturing I love, like I said, seeing as I've always loved to want to draw, I do this sort of thing in my spare time tons. I think of something and I whip it up in 3ds max, it's great fun and not only does it hone my skills, any particularly good pieces I can save for my portfolio.

It's a very competitive industry though, so you really have to give it your all to even begin to get a foot in the door, but it's always been my dream to get in, so y'know...

I'm looong past seeing games as magic, and quite often I see the worlds as they were designed rather than a place you're immersed in so to speak. So for example, your part time gamer might see an organic world where they're figuring out the path as you would if you were actually there, I see a designed binary path thus allowing me to whiz through a climbing puzzle on Tomb Raider without ever having to stop or figure out where to go once I've started. I see the subtle game designs or habits of the environment designer that indicate the "designed" path. Its...awkward to put what I see into words.

A career, no.

But as a programmer I have played a bit and made some stuff but more just to prove to myself that I could make stuff

I plan on going into computer science, and then using my knowledge to merge into game design.

If I do end up going to a computer related program, then I'm more likely to proceed in a career in game development. If not, a career in marketing, possibly involving video games.

I have quite a few ideas for games, but I'm the sort of guy who likes to develop an idea and then gets bored at the implementation stage. So I don't know.

I've thought about it but I wonder if I'd end up hating that as much as my current career.

To be perfectly honest... no, I have other avenues which I'd prefer to explore.

This covers a couple of aspects, first being that I already have a solid foundation and start to a career in a field which is almost completely unrelated; namely, civil engineering. After doing a bit of field work, being confined to the office isn't something I'd like to do (at least at this point); being outside is (generally) much more interesting. Needless to say, game design/programming would almost certainly be confined to the office.

The second reason for not pursuing a career in gaming is that I've "sampled" the experience by creating a few mods for Skyrim (only one of which being a "big project"). While I plan to continue doing this is as a hobby, I've already come across a few frustrations which are associated with game development; debugging and other repetitive things. Anyhow, those are issues which I'd rather not have to deal with on a regular basis.

I'm in school for programming and i develop games with Game Maker and Flash currently. unfortunately i'm still going solo but i've been looking for people to work with for a while now, wanting to work on bigger projects. (since my art and music skills lack)

But yeah, i plan on going into Game Development as a Programmer and Designer. Been studying a lot about game design and i'm already a strict critic on games, I think I make a decent design even now, my only downfall is being overly ambitious.

I like video games enough to attempt to make one but usually ends up with me sitting there at the computer with all the tools I need, maybe applying a few things here or there before the realization of just how hard it is to make something collapses upon me then I reconcile myself to my bed and do the equivalent of crying myself to sleep.

Yep, planning on going to the college where the writer of Extra Credits, DigiPen, next year.

And just looking at the poll makes me incredibly paranoid about over-saturation.

Nope, due to the economy, the bay area has alot of unemployed programmers with way more industry experience than I do.

Plus most of the peeps in the industry are full of shit, I prefer wrestling meth addicts, at least what they speak what they think.

I take it you mean in computer gaming in which case no simply because I like gaming it is my main hobby even if I dont play much these days and if I went into it as a job I would start to loath and despise anything to do with gaming I seriously hate being forced to do something regardless of any money involved. I may do something for free anyway but say I have to do it and pay me money and I will despise it almost without exception.

The more skills I gain in something and the more skilled I become at something the less I want to use those skills for my or someone elses financial benefit I just hate getting money involved in these things it always muddies the waters.

As you may have guessed I hate my job and every job I have ever had and almost certainly every job I ever will have I just hate being locked into something while money has never been a driving force for me, probably why I am so poor.

Oh and I dont have the skills and I sure as hell arent going to train up just so I can get into a situation I dont want to get in. Learning C++ is a goal of mine at some point in the future but I want to learn Japanese first which I am actively pursuing in self study, its damn hard because I suck at languages but I hope to be fluent one day (in the far future) I dont expect I will use it for much though maybe playing a few Japanese games on import.
