Well I'm doing my university in video games development, which also comes with a diploma in project management, which as much as I hate it, is very handy for your CV. Personally I wish to get into the art side of things, as I've always wanted to draw, but I'm awful at it, so this is the route for me, and honestly 3D is the logical step considering how much I love games and checking out the environment.
Modelling and Texturing I love, like I said, seeing as I've always loved to want to draw, I do this sort of thing in my spare time tons. I think of something and I whip it up in 3ds max, it's great fun and not only does it hone my skills, any particularly good pieces I can save for my portfolio.
It's a very competitive industry though, so you really have to give it your all to even begin to get a foot in the door, but it's always been my dream to get in, so y'know...
I'm looong past seeing games as magic, and quite often I see the worlds as they were designed rather than a place you're immersed in so to speak. So for example, your part time gamer might see an organic world where they're figuring out the path as you would if you were actually there, I see a designed binary path thus allowing me to whiz through a climbing puzzle on Tomb Raider without ever having to stop or figure out where to go once I've started. I see the subtle game designs or habits of the environment designer that indicate the "designed" path. Its...awkward to put what I see into words.
