The effects of anonimity and an audience of the Greater Internet Dickwad Theory seem to have wizzed straight past me. I never troll.

I treat everyone I meet online well, I don't make stupid jokes to people to try to piss them off, but if someone trolls me first then I troll back HARD. So if you're not a prick i'm not going to be prick to you, but on the off chance you are then i'm going to troll you. It's simple.

From time to time. I'm certainly not a better person online, but I wouldn't say I'm much worse, either. Way more outspoken online, that's for sure.

Can I get someone to confirm there are indeed 5 options to vote on?
I'm only seeing 3 options, although I already voted before, so it might just be on my end. I've never had any luck editing polls before though, so it's quite possibly just showing 3 options.
I'm going to assume it worked out. I see someone has voted on a 4th option, and the little one other slight change has eeked through.

I've never trolled before, and I do try to be as nice a person as I can, both online and off.

The thing is, things you say online are much easier to think through, given you need to type them up. This gives you more time to fix up what you are saying, instead of just blurting something out you don't really mean.

On the internet (gaming or otherwise) you cannot see the face of the person you are talking to, their reactions or their emotions to what you are saying and they cannot see yours.

This causes a break down in Social boundries and etiquette, as you can't see the person you are talking to it is easier to act differently, different people will use this breakdown in different ways an otherwise very shy person outside of the Internet could become very Extroverted and chatty because they are more comfortable in this enviorement.

However people also use this to troll as there is very little consequence to the person trolling on the internet.(and no proper real life consequences) And since you can't see the face of the person they are trolling or flaming it makes it easier (since you have less guilt not seeing their expressions).

And yet other people will just act naturally and try to be polite, all in all though while you can remain anonymous on the internet your always going to find trolling.

Thats the theory I have anyway as to why people troll and flame, as for me I hope I'm an ok person I try anyway.

I don't troll, because I behave online as I would in real life, however, it's easier to be nice online as I've actually got the time to process what I'm saying and reading it for myself first, while in real life I say stuff and then in retrospect think "damn, I should have said so and so instead") >_<

I'm not sure if you quite understand the meaning of the term "troll". By "trolling back" you are essentially getting trolled and giving the troll what they want.

I don't troll, and I try to be nice, but I also tell people honestly what I think, and that is not sometimes taken well.

You know, the 10-year olds who get upset because you hint that maybe they could use a spellcheck, since you can't understand what they are saying.

Or people who get upset when you tell them they have no idea what they are talking about, wehn they don't.

I am... eh, "More exaggerated" when I play online. For example, I call everyone "Sweet Baby"... I'll make random Unreal Tournament Announcer-style declarations like "TWELVE MINUTES, FOURTY ONE SECONDS REMAIN" or "PLAYER 3 IS IN THE LEAD" (When there's no Player 3). People do like it and I get friended a bit for it...

...but then there are annoying kids. And when I'm playing an M-rated title online and someone who's voice hasn't changed yet logs in and starts saying "WHY DIDN'T YOU _______?! GOD!" I begin trolling on them, kinda like, on behalf of the team. I children question their sexuality, what their parents do on the couch while he plays video games, etc. They usually hop off after the round changes to save face by not rage-quitting mid-match.

Surprisingly, in real life, attitude-wise I'm probably more akin to Dr. Gregory House and therefore have a tiny circle of really cool friends and "everyone else trying to get in".

I'm pretty much the same, maybe a bit more self-righteous online. I'm more sociable here than in person though.

I dislike online gaming for this very reason. As much as I would want to, I can't imagine 12 years olds not shouting and swearing online all the time.

So many seem to think "troll" means "flame", it's why half the "trolls" you see these days are so half-assed.
It sucks doesn't it. Especially because trolls get hailed as heroes in the same way that sports stars do on some parts of the internet. Trolling is a dying art, some would say that's a good thing.
