Some people are not so keen on getting up a higher difficulty, because of the amount of times that you will die before you get used to it.

So escapist, ever been scared of the Veteren or Legendary or whatever difficulties?

No, not really. I just make sure beforehand that I'm ready, then launch into it.

I play the easiest difficulty, then the hardest. I'm odd like that. Recently I've started at normal to make sure I have at least a bit of a challenge, though for some games I've just gone straight to the hardest difficulty.

I always go in on the hardest difficulty straight away.

Then that feels normal to me so I can complete the game without too many complaints.

Also gives you a leg up in multiplayer as you are already used to having to play tactically/generally better to beat the game.

Also I played every Halo game on Legendary because I got bored one week... that was quite fun.

On shooters I always play the hardest difficulty.

On RPG's I play the default difficulty.

On strategy games I play lower difficulty levels and then move up if I have a talent for that particular game.

It depends on how good I am with the genre in general.

Nope. Usually the games I play never have Hard Difficulty...then again...now-a-days...its uncommon to play a game with a difficulty setting.

Usually do a run through of a game on the easiest setting, just so I can hear the story. Then I'll go through it every now and then on harder difficulty setting when I get round to it.

I'm not afraid of the setting, just the frustration it brings.

I tend to play only on the higher difficulty settings, is not as fun otherwise.

Varies. On one hand I want to be challenged, on the other hand I have the bad habit of not finishing games because I'm stuck for too long because I was playing on hard. So lately I play just below my level, so I will at least finish the thing. Sure, the feeling of accomplishment is no Battletoads, but I guess my interests in how I view games have shifted. I want to play lots of games and see what they did, how they made it etc.

I like my games on normal to hard if it's not giving enough of a challenge I will bump it up to something harder like insane if that's an option.

I usually play on the hardest difficulty setting. Now if you excuse me, I have to die for the umpteenth time in Bioshock 2.

I single player I rarely go to the top difficulty, I usually stick to merely hard, though with some games I will play on lower difficulties just to make it more playable if i'm not likeing it much.
Online I like to crank up the difficulty, especially with coop games, the higher diffictuly levels really make coop come into its own.
