Yeah so are mine, I don't have the patience for hard or extreme difficulties, I play games to relax not stress myself.

I have beaten Gears 2, Halo 3, and multiple others on their highest difficulty settings. The one I will not touch is the Insanity difficulty in the Mass Effect games. I just recently beat the first one on Hardcore, and even though I was playing as a Soldier, it still induced much embarrassingly high-pitched screaming. Insanity is, to use a TV Trope, "Exactly What It Says On The Tin".

Hardest I can play. if I game makes me unlock hard, which I hate, I usually don't play it again, just to spite them. You die a lot, but then sometimes you figure out tricks you gotta do to beat comps. I remember I used flashbangs a LOT in the hardest difficulty of rainbow six vegas.

Usually I play on normal difficulty and then play a second game on harder difficulty. If I start off on harder difficulty I usually have no reason to play again, unless I REALLY liked the game.

Nope. Starcraft 2 for instance, I started out as hard, and then after finishing, I restarted again on Brutal difficulty.

I never go below the normal/medium difficulties unless it's just absurdly difficult.

Also, the thread title lies. There is no poll!

Afraid? No of course not. Annoyed? Depending on the game. If the scale of difficulty is good (I.E. Mass Effect 2) then I'd glady ramp of the difficulty. If the scale in difficulty is ludicrous, such as where on very hard mode if you do not have a unique energy weapon it will take you a good 5 minutes to kill overlord in Fallout 3, then I'll never shift that meter.

I usually start with the hardest mode, unless it's a type of game I've never played before, or I plan on replaying. Say if it was my first time playing RTS, I'd start with normal or maybe even easier.

I hate games that have harder difficulties locked, annoying as hell.

I used to be scared of the Higher diffulcatys, only playing them for achievements/trophies. That was before I beat Demon's Souls. Now I laugh at any games sad excuse for a hard mode. I live for the challenge! Bring it on!

Yes, because I'm afraid of getting stuck and then losing interest before I can finish it. That's why I usually play on an "Easy" mode if it's available, or "Normal" if it isn't. There's only one game I've ever played on a higher difficulty. But I never dive into the hard modes right away; I have to beat a nicer mode first, so that way if I do get stuck, I'll already know the rest of the story so it doesn't really bother me too much.

I'm a wuss of a gamer, I know. ;_;

I will normally play on Easy, then the second highest difficulty before moving on to the highest. The first game I played on the highest difficulty was Halo 3 and ever since I've always been nervous about moving up difficulties. I have to force myself to move up after the game gets too easy.

fear isn't the word.

I just don't have fun dying over and over and over and over and over again.

I understand the thrill of doing something difficult, and that it's more fun to complete something that you have to work very hard to do, but I still would rather CONSISTENT fun. My fun doesn't need to come in steep spikes.

Some people are not so keen on getting up a higher difficulty, because of the amount of times that you will die before you get used to it.

So escapist, ever been scared of the Veteren or Legendary or whatever difficulties?
Not scared per se, however since I'm not into high octane masochism it's only very specific games that I really, really, like that I master the skills in order to do something like that. It's also probably a big part of why I've never 1000/1000 or platinumed a game (well that and jumping around between a lot of games since I have trouble keeping focused).

I can typically do anything that I really want to do when it comes to games, even if I get there a bit slower than most people. It's just that few games motivate me in of themselves to where I think say having psychic AI, draonian resource limits, and/or incredibly durable monsters or whatever is going to actually entertain me.

A lot of people talk about the challenge inherant in "hard" difficulty modes, however I think a lot of them are poorly designed and don't really provide a challenge as much as make the game dependant on luck and persistance... something other players have noticed and occasionally commented on. In a hard mode for some games it doesn't seem like a test of aquired skill, because skill doesn't have anything to do with it. I mean if say the AI reacts to all attacks with computer speed and your basically playing for it to make a mistake or miss a block enough times to win (or whatever) that's not skill as much as bashing your head against the random number generator. A lot of people who brag about stuff like this are demonstrating persistance rather than game mastery. Some games have good "hard modes" that are a challenge, and a rare few games might have "broken" hard modes (as I see it) but are able to make the experience interesting enough where you don't mind the test of your patience.

Normally I'll give the game a playthrough on normal then go again on a harder difficulty. That being said, if the game is a game where your not amused by your deaths then I'll most likely stay on normal..

So no, I'm not afraid. I love higher difficulty settings. I don't get frustrated you see, I get determined.
Yeah, I'm the same way.

I usually play on the hardest difficulty for shooters and strategy games, and I'll play on the normal to second highest difficulty for RPGs until I'm used to the game. Oddly enough, I'm usually best at RPGs but I like to get used to the game's system first, and then I'll pop up to the highest difficulty.

Used to be. Now I tend to take them as a matter of course, unless the game is notably hard. The main reason is, if I'm finding a game too hard, I'll realise early and be able to switch down. If I find a game too easy, I'll usually just get apathetic towards the game and give up.

I'm not afraid per se, I just can't beat them. I struggle to hold my own against opponents on a Normal difficulty setting in most RTS games. Why is that, I wonder...

In FPSes and RPGs I never change the difficulty down.
