I pierced the left one a few years back, then eventually stopped caring. I don't wear anything now, and I expect it would be some trouble to try and fit anything in the hole.

I'm 16 and my ears aren't "pireced" and, to be honest, I think that burning my ears on a pyre would be incredibly painful.

Nope, male 21. Only accessory i have is a silver chain on my wrist. Never saw the appeal in earrings for males, and i have only one friend who has it, he also used to have a ponytail and hes a jackass.

Male 25

Got my left ear pierced as a birthday present when I turned 7 or 8. It was the early 90's and earrings were what was cool. After I lost my stud at about 12 I just never bought a replacement.

Female, no, and 24. I'm too lazy and don't care enough about my appearance to indulge in jewelry.

The bassist in my school big band and combo swallowed a lip piercing once... didn't look fun.
Ugh. Was he/she okay?

22 year old female here, and no, I don't have pierced ears. My mom was scared we'd develop allergies when I was a kid, and wouldn't let us decide for our own until we were 16. I was never really bothered - too busy playing games and climbing trees.

Not sure how to respond to your poll. Your question is in the present and my ears aren't pierced anymore, but have been. The holes have since grown shut.

Anyway: Male and 24. Pierced 16-19.
Really? They shut? I had my left ear pierced when I was young (my choice), I might put a thing in for christmas, but that's it and it is still open (or at least it was last christmas). Also, male and 17.

Seems like your poll is figuring out how many people on this forum are male.

But anyway. I'm female, 32, and have never had piercings.

I think trying to fit in with the crowd by harming or mutilating yourself is a pretty dumb decision, and I think that I'd pass that feeling along to my kids if I ever have any. But that being said:

1. A girl getting pierced, once she's old enough to choose it for herself? Fine.

2. A little baby getting pierced, because her mom wanted her to look a little cuter than she already was - at the cost of pain that the baby can't even understand?

Lady, you disgust me. You don't deserve a kid.

Reminds me of those puppies in Black Beauty who got their ears cropped.

3. A boy getting pierced, once he's old enough to understand the ramifications? Well... okay.

But while our culture sees a girl with pierced ears as normal, that's not how our culture sees a boy with pierced ears. So a boy needs a higher standard of "informed consent."

4. Piercings in other visible places? Be informed!

You're branding yourself in a certain way, and limiting your job opportunities (and more). So I think you shouldn't be allowed to do this before you're at least 16 (old enough to care about job opportunities).

Also: A classmate in college took her new belly-button piercing into a hot tub... and ended up in the hospital. That's an open wound that shouldn't be exposed to germs, people!

5. Personally? I wouldn't date a man with a pierced ear. In my family's culture, a pierced ear means slavery. And for me it means "girly," and I wouldn't want a girly man.

I don't think I could ever get past these two instinctual reactions, so that's that.

Well, after failing to vomit it up, the bell rang and he went to the hospital. He was back by the end of the day and was fine. Never got the whole story.
