Traditionally, zombies climb out of the grave, which clearly indicates they are undead.

Lately though, as in Zombieland and general Zombie Apocalypse mythology, they get bitten and afflicted with some sort of transforming virus and the next day they are a brain-eating zombie, with no real indication that they ever died.

Does it matter?
I can't find any situation in which the specifics of what an imaginary creature is classified as will affect you.
So lets stop making zombie threads, and get some creativity.

I really don't understand the meaning of the word "undead." Surely if you're not dead then you're alive?

Zombie- Reanimated corpse, through disease, radiation, necromancy

Infected- Created by a disease, but very much alive

That being said, when hordes are smashing down your doors to feast on your flesh, such distinctions are the least of your worries.

They aren't dead because their bodies function. Since they aren't dead, they are alive.

I suppose it's not actually possible for that to happen so it doesn't really need to make sense. Where does the word undead actually come from anyway?

Most canon says that they are for one reason or another people who are now dead, but their bodies are controlled by either a virus or majik.

it depends on the situation

if we are in a medi-evil situation then they are the creation of a necromancer or mad wizard or dark magic who seek to kill and consume flesh (and brains of course) not to mention spreading their undead curse or their master's wishes

if it is modern day then they arent really undead they are either "infected" by a biological contagion that spreads on contact (28 days later)
or
re-animated corpses created by dark magic (typically voodoo)

Obviously it depends on the story of what kind of zombies they are...
