And now for my weekly thread.

A couple days ago my brother brought up something about if you spend 1000 hours at something you are a master at it. This got me to thinking that I have easily spent that much time with Magic the gathering, World of Warcraft and close to that about learning about world of warcraft lore. I wouldnt consider myself a master at any of those so I started thinking about it and thought "am I really a master at those?"
[sub]Also by this I would be a master at school...which isnt likely...or maybe it is? Low 80s without trying in most courses. Is that mastery?[/sub]

Answer I dont think so. I'm not stellar at Magic, I pull mediocre DPS/heals/tanking in World of Warcraft. The closest one would probably be the Warcraft lore since I can pull from that and reference it easily.

Perhaps I am going about this wrong. Maybe I'm taking "Mastery" to a level that doesnt exist. Well according to free online dictionary

1. Possession of consummate skill.-I suppose
2. The status of master or ruler; control: mastery of the seas.-I dont own magic the gathering or World of warcraft(even though it would be awesome)
3. Full command of a subject of study: Her mastery of economic theory impressed the professors.-This is what I was thinking of.

So Escapist is this phrase true? False? Or is it a big hulking rutabaga?
[sub]Yes I know this thread is irrelevant but please I would like input[/sub]

It kind of depends. You could spend 1000 hours in a game, leaving it on while you sleep or leave and eat a taco. Conversely, you could spend every waking minute honing your skills to the point where even the game thinks you're using an aim-bot when you're not.

Its crap. Mastery is how skillful you are at something. Not how much time you put in.
Hell I know guys that have been peeing standing up for 30+ years and still sometimes miss the bowl. Or people who have been eating their entire lives yet still get crap all over their faces.
See I found myself thinking that however the way I think of Mastery is how many times you succeed over screw up. If you miss the bowl while pissing once every now and again you made a mistake because you are human. Being a master does not instantly make you perfect at what you do just really good at what you do.

With the eating if you practice to eat properly every time you eat you should get better. If you just eat like a slob your not doing anything that makes you work so your not getting better at it. Or your just getting really good at eating badly...

Depends what it is, and how much effort you put in.

Mastery takes years, Not hours.

And i like the idea of a decent point a week, Go for it dude!

Im more referring to the tag before the thread. I will try to make a thread every week but I just wondered if the little tag before it was over the top douchebagery.

Also 1000 hours is 41.6 days total. Which could go over several years.

Perhaps your brother uses the term "mastery" in lesser terms. Maybe more along the lines of, you can handle yourself without royally screwing everything up.

I personally think that the "Masters" are people who have perfected the game down to a science. Ever see a Starcraft Korean Tournament? Apparently, there are certain strategy builds, and they can time other people's builds to know when to hit!

I've spent plenty of time on Starcraft, probably 1000 hours. But a master? I wouldn't last 20 minutes against one.

I guess if you spent 1000 hours of solid improvement you might get close.

Example - I play a lot of Bass, but not every hour of that playing is me "practising." Same with you play MT:G, you might have been playing for 1000 hours but not every hour of that would be you studying, you could just be having a few games with friends.

If that makes any sense.

Also - Why make weekly threads? Why not make one when you have the idea for a decent topic?

It makes sense, you have a valid point. If you dont "work" at it for 1000 hours then you arnt really refining your skills. Which would be a determent if this was to be considered true.

Also-Because I have work on Sunday and have 5 hours to think and do nothing. Good time to think about different tangents. Also I would like to do something potentially helpful to the escapist. Since I like this place so much it's nice to think I might potentially be helping makes me feel better:)

Yeah I pretty much vote for this.

There are people who have been playing pokemon for years and still only go by the basics, then there's snotty little bitches who decide to kick it up into a sport.

Ummm... otherwise yeah... you can have poured years into Super Smash Bros. Brawl against Easy opponents, but the dude who spends weeks toughing it out against a team of level 9's is likely to be better.

It kind of depends on what you are talking about, but then again complete mastery of something is unachievable, since there is always somebody who is better than you.

Well theoretically some masters are better than others so to completely toss the concept for fact of that theres 5.9x10to the 6 other people likely one's gonna be better than ya.

By that I think that that person would only be good at fighting easy opponents. Like how people who play 9s all the time are tripped up by 1s sometimes due to their facepalm easy difficulty and slow movement compared to their fast paced tough characters. Their mastery is in something easier but they might still be a master at that level. Does that make sense?
