I can see why they implemented them, keeping servers running is hard work, and you'd want to reduce your workload, but as someone with a love of animated gifs, it's a fucking nightmare.

It's very difficult to get a .gif with any sort of length below 200k with any sort of quality intact, let alone 100k.

Publishers club members get 200k you see.

I'd like them to remove it, obviously, but I don't really blame them if they don't.

I suppose I'm sticking with this avatar for a while then.
the escapist really wants to make sure the club members stand out. *look at how awesome this is!*.....*sigh*

Actually, I believe it's because the PubClub members pay for the subscription, they can afford to give them more server space. Otherwise, they're running it at a loss.
yet a bigger avatar can hardly be considered an improvement.

Frankly, I'm delighted to see anything that causes a reduction in animated avatars. There's no need for them, and all they do is clutter up the page and increase loading times (not an issue for most these days, but there are still people on dialup).

That said, 75x75 is, I would say, a bit too small. But hey, I just made sure I made versions of my standard avatar to fit the various sites. Easy enough.

Well, my home made avatar comes in at just 52KB so I can't really complain. I'd just like a bigger image so that I can make out some of the detail in some of the awesome avatars on here.

What do you mean?
you pay them.
and they use part of that money to make a bigger avatar (most likely) to make you stand out so that other people will also want that. it's not really an improvement to you, yet you paid for it.

You know what they say about guys with big avatars! Nudge nudge wink wink.

... actually we just say they don't have a copy of photoshop and/or don't know how to compress images properly. PNG not being good compression, ever.

Well, you don't get the bigger avatar automatically. You can still do any size you like, but it's just been put up to 100x100 for PubClub members.

I made it big because I like big avatars, that's basically it.

Besides, I don't really see the problem here. When you pay someone for something, in this case a subscription, how can you not expect to get something in return? It's hardly surreptitious or anything, it's just them holding their end of the deal. You pay for a subscription, you get extras in return.
Holly shit, I just realised that your avatar was in fact bigger. Shows how observant I am.

ofcource you have to get something in return. i just think it's pointless to have a bigger avatar. (you can't do anything with it)

but yeah you like it, so that should be enough.
i simply like my prizes to be practical. (useful)

It doesn't really matter to me. I tend to stick with still avatars instead of .gifs anyway, so size isn't really an issue. Heck, I haven't even increased mine to the 100x100 scale yet.

Oh yes, give me more space to watch annoying, moving, seasure causing avatars! Yelling in my face for attention and forcing me to like the person for being FUNNEY!

Seriously, I know it's annoying when you have a clear picture ready but can't directly put it there.

But whe can all see what the avatar is, right? Isn't that enough? Be glad you may have one. o_o

In my ideal world, people wouldn't be able to use animated crap in avatars, so 100kB would be plenty. They'd also be able to use something a bit bigger than 75x75, though, because that's obnoxiously small, and every other site I use is at least 100x100, if not 150x150, and it's irritating to not be able to easily recycle stuff I make.
Did... did you just insult Furburt's avatar, which is from Evil Dead? If so, please give me your address, it will save us both time. Nobody insults anything related to Evil Dead and lives. Seeing as mine is 2.2 KB, the file size is no problem for me, but still.
I've actually seen and liked all three of them (oddly enough the first more than the other two, even though I usually like comedy more than gross-out horror). I just don't like animated stuff in general, because it's kind of distracting sometimes when I'm trying to read. My attention span these days is less than impressive at times.
