Poll: AvP Demo

Recently, I downloaded the multiplayer demo for the newest AvP game. And the result? Meh.

It was an okay demo. I started off playing as a marine (because all the other players picked aliens) and it was pretty atmospheric. You had to keep an eye on your motion sensor, so not to get offed by a stealthy predator or alien, and I found that shooting an alien in the face while in mid-lunge was very satisfying, when you weren't being shot at by other marines. Basically, I quite liked it.

The next game, I managed to secure a position as a predator in the pre-game lobby. But once in game, I found that controlling a predator was actually quite frustrating. Having to constantly switch between visions was a little annoying to begin with, but the real annoyance came when I creeped up behind an unsuspecting marine, an alien suddenly dropped behind me and stuck its tongue through my face. And this is before I could even attack! I found myself bested by the controls, and whether to do a 'weak' attack or a 'strong' attack. Soon all my fights descended into button-mashing of the bumpers in order to even hit my enemy, so I ended up coming about 5th or 6th. I hadn't quite got it.

The last straw came though, when I played as an alien. I mean, what the hell. Am I upside-down? Am I in plain sight? All I had to answer these questions was a little green bar in the centre of my screen. Plus you move so goddamn fast it's hard to actually plan a stealthy attack. Okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, but still, I found playing as an alien annoying and unintuitive.

While I did like being a marine, and having to live in constant fear of being killed, I think that the titular classes are not as much fun. Also, the fact that the AvP demo was a free-for-all didn't really work with the game's strengths. If they'd included the Infestation mode, where one alien picks off and infects a bunch of marines, it would incorporate the kind of gameplay advertised. And I refuse the fact that if I'm griping about this it's because I'm terrible at at games.

I've downloaded the demo but haven't gotten around to playing it. I'm annoyed its multiplayer only and i've heard getting a game is a nightmare.

I am great at all of the classes. The combat isn't hard once you figure it out. The problem with the demo is that it doesn't tell you much at all, which gets really frustrating. For instance, you're supposed to be able to block certain grab-attacks, but the game doesn't tell you how to do this, and so it is really frustrating when you get stealth-killed knowing that you could have prevented it.

Also, there is a huge problem with people doing stealth/trophy kills on you while fighting someone. While everyone has their own style, I like to call this something that could be considered "noobish", as it is guaranteed that you will be killed if you do a grab-kill during a fight with several people. For the sake of everyone having a good time, I'm warning you people: Only stealth/trophy kill when you think you are alone with the victim!

That's about what I had to say. Loved the demo and I will be getting it for PS3 definitely.

I wouldn't say doing so is noobish(Mainly because that word annoys me.), but rather suicidal. Although, it is much more satisfying to kill someone in such a way, and then get away with it.
Also, as mentioned in another thread, the Predator's throwing disk is overpowered, since it one-shots you, and it comes back to the player.

Aside from the matchmaking it was great, although they could have gone with a species deathmatch. You know, Marines vs Aliens vs Predators, because being a mrine and having to watch your back for other marines didn't sit right.

I once had a huge grab-kill moment where an alien stealth-killed a marine, and the exact moment the alien was done I trophy-killed him, and then at the exact same moment I killed him I was stealth-killed.

It was rather humorous.

I went in a game and everyone was a predator, couldn't find any one for ages, then I killed someone and was killed instantaneously, at this point I switched it off as the scenery was boring, so was the gameplay and the loading times were huge. I went straight back to the B-BC2 demo, which is awesome

The game is unplayable on my machine for no apparent reason.

Seemed neat enough though.

I loved it, though I don't know if I'm going to buy it just yet. It's a great game to be played with friends.

For those who are still having trouble with matchmaking on the PS3, Sega took down the original demo and put up a more up-to-date demo that includes game browsing and game creation. You just have to delete your old demo file and download the new one.

Not bad. I liked that fact that each species had different ways for moving around, although I kinda wish that they'd made the demo team death match so that we could actually compared them against each other. I was fighting my own species in the game more than any other, so it got boring fast

Theres a 2 predator limit in the game so I doubt that.

I thought it was good but could have been so much more. For one a tutorial would be handy or at least a screen which shows the controls properly (took me 2 days to work out both bumpers made you block). Free for all tends to turn into a bit of a clusterfuck of trophy kills at times with a line of people backstabbing each other.

If they'd included a small portion of single player, like the predator section shown at E3 or somewhere similar, and changed it to species deathmatch it would have been an amzing demo. The game even states "Marine tactics - stay together" and that as an alien you should work with fellow aliens to ambush. Free for all just make sense in a game where they draw up three teams

BC2 demo was poorly designed.

It's just fucking Modern Warfare 2. If that idea appeals to you think more power to you. However, just as frustrating and too safe. At least this one is ambitious.
Just because it's a shooter set in modern times doesn't make a game "another modern warfare". Battlefield did alot of Call of Duty's ideas first but nobody ever calls them on that

I foudn it lacking. teh controlsl (pc) we're unspecified, and i couldn't change shit. I oculdn't seem to find any controlls, so i couldn't pounce people (was alien), dunno if thats even doable in this game like it was in AVP2.

Also, DM is prolly the worst mode to pick for a game like that.

I'll have to finda way to tyr the actual games multiplayer when it comes out before blowing money on it.

Hold down the focus button and look at an enemy. At a certain range, a semi-transparent circle should appear around your enemy. When you see that, press the light attack button to lunge/pounce at them.

The rooms you entered had species balancing turned on. If it's turned off, all players can be predator/aliens/marines.
