Backwards compatibility is when a newer system comes out that can play games from an older system. For example the PS2 can play PS games, or the DS can play GBA games.

But it seems that the games industry is moving away from this for whatever reason. Newer PS3s can't play PS2 games. And the DSi can't play GBA games.

There seems to be two schools of thought about games, and it's which school you subscribe to that usually dictates weather you think backwards compatibility is useful.

1.) When you get bored of a game you sell it.

2.) When you get bored of a game you keep it in case you want to play it again.

Most people that do the first one don't care about backwards compatibility. Where as most people who do the second like it.

I personaly like Backwards compatibility, and it makes me sad that they seem not to want to do it anymore.

My theroy is that they want people to buy the older systems. I hear Sony is re-releasing a cheeper PS2, much like they did with the PSone.http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90598

But anyway what's your oppinions on this subject?

I think backwards compatibility is a huge selling point. It's one of the reasons I very much dislike the DS[b/]i[/b].

EDIT: Damn as soon as I posted this, I knew something was up...

Er, I could be wrong about this but I think the DSlite has it, but the DSi dosen't.

Personally I have yet to sell a game and I love when I can play my xbox games on my xbox 360. It's for when I get bored of the xbox 360 games I already have and want to play something which I don't have a more modern version of like Burnout Revenge. I also played GTA San Andreas on my 360 because it's a nice break from how crazily serious GTA IV is. At least San Andreas was funny.

It's definitely a selling point for me; I specifically bought a backwards compatible PS3 because I still enjoy many PS2 games, but also wanted to be able to play any of the new games that come out for the PS3.

DS Lite plays GBA games, do you mean DSi?

the reason is that they want you to buy new games for your new system. They take a huge hit when you buy a system and refuse to buy games for that system because you're buying used games for a system they've largely put behind them.

The american president of Sony has even said that's exactly why the PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility. The PS3 isn't doing as well, and they need people to buy lots of PS3 games - preferably new PS3 games.

They're re-releasing the PS2 to make up for the lack of backwards compatibility.

My PS3 has backwards compatibility and it very convenient if I'm going to play a PS2 or PS1 game that I don't have to connect the older consoles and I don't have to worry about running out of memory card space any time soon. I could survive with out backwards compatibility but since I still play PS1 and PS2 games it is like I said much more convenient.

Why would someone buy a PS3 and then only play PS2 games on it? Woulden't it be cheaper just to buy a PS2?

DSi aparently will have an online store were you can buy the GBA games and stuff...New ways to make the costumers to squeeze out money.

In the hopes that someday the PS3 will have good games? :p

I like backwards compatibility, and I'm glad I have an older PS3 that still has it.

I have yet to find a game that wouldn't play on Vista that would on Win95 to WinXP. And DOSBox runs just fine on Vista so you can play even older games also.

Backwards compatibility was a HUGE factor in purchasing my PS3 since I had an extensive PS2 collection. My only problem was most of the games I owned for PS2 were either rare games like Wizardry and Suikoden 3 or collector's editions which weren't supported by the PS3 (yet.)

But, after playing PS3 games, I found myself dissatisfied with my PS2 games. I would play more PSX games than PS2 games, which is not very many, so I ended up getting rid of them all.

Same held true for my XBox games. They just couldn't compete with my 360 games so they all had to go bye-bye.

But really how does that apply to the DSi situation. As far as I know there are no games that play on DSi that wont play on DS or DSlite.

Maybe they should release games that will convince me to buy them rather than retreads of what I already own then...

wow, 100% of 58 votes are for yes. The escapist has decided that backwards compatibility is very important. It is to me for sure.

the DSi's lack of BWC is technical space for the extra gizmos etc.. and really, it IS backwards compatible - to DS games

Its a must nowadays.

It probably would sell more if it had backwards compatibility. Xbox360 had done this for most of the games.

I sold my original Xbox to buy a 360. This week I bought Morrowind again for $2.50. I believe this shows where I stand.

I have never, NEVER sold any of my games in my life. I love them all, even if they get dull every once in a while. I try to keep all of them, because one of these days, I'm gonna want to play it again, because I miss a certain aspect of it, or maybe I didn't beat it before.
