I see badass as to something manly, actiony cool while hardcore is something performing something at ease on hardmode.

"Hardcore" is one of those words I left behind in the 90s along with "grunge" and "slammin."

"Hardcore" tends to sound like people trying way too hard to me.

...yes, this goes for music, too.

Hardcore is about skills and difficulty. Badass is about style and appearance (mainly strong, resistant and/or destructive). You can have hardcore games with stylized and cartoonish looks. You can have games with badass animations, activated with just one button. You can have both, or you can have neither.

"Badass": Cool in a way that suggests power, dominance, defiance or violence.

"Hardcore": Generally I'd say it means committed or dedicated. However within gaming it generally means "miserable person who gets angry over trivial shit."
You forgot the most important part of being Hardcore - making sure everyone knows how much "better" you are at one particular game

Badass is what you kinda want to do, but can't logically... Hardcore is what you kinda don't want to do, but could if possible...

Other than that, this is one hardcore thread... Maybe even badass and shit...

These days it seems to means the person saying them likes that game, they are just looking for "cool" words to describe it with so you will be impressed. What you imagine those mean doesn't really mean much when listening to someone who has a completely different idea, if you keep going by your definition there will be a huge communication gap which can be quite important when these are reviews you rely on for purchases.

The simplest games get called "hardcore" because someone just likes that sound.

Oh yeah, I'm absolutely not trying to hide that, as made evident when I said "And yes, the reason for this thread is obvious" in my OP afterwards. I simply found this to be a good opportunity for a discussion and opinion thread on the topic. An actual discussion where we respect opinions and don't tell everyone they're wrong
I know, I was just poking some fun. And the question is actually an interesting one, seeing how many interpretations of both terms we have so far.

I also can't help but notice the person who inspired this thread hasn't pitched in (yet). That's a little disappointing.

But really you would label Doomguy as badass because he kills demons and goes against Hell no matter what Hayden has to say about it.
In theory, that should be enough. In practice, there's some ultimate evil set to destroy humanity in every other game I play and it doesn't really impress me that the protagonist is stopping it.

But the Doomguy kinda does it in style. Even if he is stealing some of that style from the Brutal Doom mod.

That's probably the worst part of it. You'd think he'd be all over this. Maybe it's not manly enough

"Badass" sounds kind of tongue-in-cheek to me. Someone might use it semi-ironically, so that's fine.

"Hardcore" doesn't carry that fun connotation. It sounds like something try-hards would say.

I use badass to refer to epic hero moments. I don?t think it needs to be particularly skilful (though pulling off something complex in the heat of the moment could qualify), it could be a scripted event if it can pull it off.

Hardcore suggests an intense attitude towards gaming rather than a style of game or a particular level of difficulty. I think of someone who takes games ultra seriously and places value in the level of dedication they have towards it. I always consider myself casual regardless of what I?m playing or whether I?m any good at it. I play games for fun, it?s an entertainment product. I save any ?hardcore? attitudes for things that are at least productive.
