I got the new Batman game this Christmas, and I recently only just finished it. The main reason I wanted it was due to it's ridiculously rated reviews, most all about 90%, and because Batman is generally quite awesome.

However, like I said, I just recently finished it and thought: "Wait a tic, that wasn't all that good". Granted, it was good, just not as good as everyone else said. People that played it said stuff like, "It's the closest to perfection a video game is". Of course, I realise it's probally just a gap in opinion. I'm sure I'm just weird or something for not liking this "masterpiece".

One of things I absolutely cannot agree with is it's "perfection" rating though. Combat, although fun, gets boring after a while. All common enemies use the same character build, with only a few variants in their actual looks, mainly the colour of their skin. Many of the sneaking modes gets repetetive over a while, and these scenes only have about ten or so pieces of repeated common dialogue. Certain boss-type enemies are repeated several times, mainly Bane copies, of which there must be ten or so within one playthrough... I could go on. There are a few more things that tick me off about the game, such as the ending or the fact that having to tap the X button like a mad-man every time you want to open a hatch or pull down a wall gets really annoying after a while, but I'm sure I've gotten my point across.

So, am I just crazy or something? Are all these things meant to be fun? Is it definately deserving of it's high ratings? Or do you disagree with any of my points?

All very true, but think about the potential this game has to inspire and improve on other games. Imagine if the stealth system of Assassin's Creed was this solid the first time around? The game deserved the high rating, but it should be taken down several notches because of zero desire to play it again on another difficulty.

At least Ubisoft isn't the retarded monkey that EA is. They are at least listening to people's complaints and are going to improve upon it again. Hopefully it will not be like the Prince of Persia trilogy snafu

There's no doubt that its ratings were helped by the "OMG a licensed game which isn't complete garbage... also: Batman" factor. If it was a new IP, its Metacritic average would likely be in the low 80s.
That is true, but a large part of the enjoyment for Batfans comes from the fact that almost every villain gets some kind of cameo. The games a freaking encyclopedia. A new IP just wouldn't have that history to draw from.

It was alright, and because it seems people are saying "Best. Gaem. Evar!!11" then I would have to say, yes, it is overrated.

I will say, it was quite fun just nothing too amazing.

It's a good game and probably the best Batman game ever done. However, I do believe it is overrated.

As a Batman game, having a 3D character dressed with the famous cowl and cape isn't enough to make it true to the Dark Knight. And this regard, the game fails. Anyone who has read a lot of Batman comics knows there is something important missing; the narration. Bruce Wayne is a troubled man in constant conflict with his role as a hero. He's always questioning his actions and make reflections about the current events. It might be a lot to ask to a video game, but I believe it feasible. Also, the environments are lacking some life and look too static. I would assume a jailbreak in such prison should be a lot creepier.

As a game, everything in Arkham Asylum feels to stiff. Controlling Batman is like controlling a tank (he's a martial art master) and the camera (which is too close to Batman in my opinion) could have been a lot smoother. The fighting is grandiose the first few times, but become quickly repetitive.

Oh, and please don't get me wrong. This is just for argument sake. I loved Batman Arkham Asylum and I'm really surprised by how good the game turned out to be. It does a lot of things right like the stealth mechanics and the overall audio design. The characters and setting design are also incredible. But in terms of overall value, I preferred games like Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed II and Infamous.

Finally, I know I will break the whole purpose of a debate, but bottom line it all depends on your appreciation of the game. If you think the game was worth you 60$, then no, the game wasn't overrated to you. On my side, I think other games were more worthy of that same amount of money.

Many games get ruined because of the hype. Eventhough it might be a great game, people who get the game late/r expect it to be the game to rule them all.

Why? The Inverted Takedown alone is what really puts you behind the mask. Also, it one of the only few games that show that a movie tie in to make a good superhero game is not necessary. It has so many things to do and they are all balanced and that's why it is good. Now many times have you listened to henchmen talking during an ambush? The dialogues were really good and funny sometimes (ME IN A THONG?) and the environments rocked, blah, blah, blah, but the core gameplay was just done right.

Seconded...
Yeah, yeah... that's great and all, but I was sort of looking for reasons WHY.
Mark Hamill...that is all.
took the words out of my mouth

his was the saviour of a bland and repeated story over the universe of Batman, he was a great addition to masterfull representation of the most iconic enemy Batman haves, he could be up there in par with Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger.

i have said it before but, the only reason Batman seems sane enough to be believed is because of the Joke, the jing jang of the story, the true nemesis, caos and order, withouth him, it would never be the same and it would be (as the Joker himselve points out) "a crazy guy dressed up like a bat... can you believe the lunatic?"

Yep, it kicks lots of ass. I've been playing through it and Assassin's Creed simultaneously and AC is what I would call video game perfection, BUT Batman is the type of game absolutely anyone can sit down and have fun with. Challenging while accessible, familiar and new at the same time.

So, uh, yea I liked it a lort.
I hope you mean ACII. The first Assassin's Creed is a very mediocre game. AA is much better.

And no Batman is by no means overrated. It's a fantastic game, the combat system blends perfectly, if you're just mashing X you're doing it wrong, try the challenge modes, there's a lot of finesse to getting combos up in combat.

Also the Stealth is amazing, and realistic, all the gadgets are useful and fun.

Its definitely overrated. I was bored with it in a few hours.

A big problem I had with the combat was the randomness. When you push the attack button, you may get a punch, you may get a flying jump kick with twice the wind-up time (causing you to get hit, breaking your combo). There is no way to tell what kind of attack you're getting. Sure it looks neat, but for a game with such precise timing and combo mechanics, this is totally unacceptable.

I have a problem with game overflow. I start a game play it halfway through and then stop for no apparent reason. Batman Arkham Asylum made me play it through and that's why I know it's a good game.

In a word, no. Not even close. Does Batman have to run away immediately after he snags a bad guy? Hell no.

I thought Batman AA was great.

One thing I want to add is that there was an awesome Batman game made by Konami on the SNES based on the Animated series. The graphics perfectly matched the look of the Cartoon. The gameplay was also quite good and varied. So basically saying I hope people realize that there are two good Batman games. Both games did a good job at portraying Batman in the way they wanted.
