I'm sure that many people on the Escapist are familiar with Bayonetta. It will be getting an anime movie by studio Gonzo. Here is the link below:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-09-18/bayonetta-game-gets-anime-film-by-gonzo-in-november

I'm curious about other people think about this. As for me, I don't have a lot of faith in the movie since one of the main strengths of Bayonetta was the gameplay, not the story.

Is there something wrong about Gonzo in particular? I haven't heard about them until now.

Not sure how well this would work. As you said OP, the game's strength was in it's fantastic gameplay. The story itself was kinda... eh.

Since Japanese animation is predominantly freelance work, the quality that each studio puts out varies wildly, but as studios go, Gonzo is certainly low on the totem pole. Their signature is poorly integrated CG and mediocre visual quality.

They've earned a bit of undue respect for making shows like the original Hellsing and Gantz, and they've earned an equal amount of derision for making shows like...Hellsing and Gantz. My real gripe with Gonzo is something I am not talented enough to precisely define, but in short, what they produce is [i[boring[/i]. I assume they suck at storyboarding and/or directing, though I think they also tend to have a kind of bland color palette.

They did, however, make Welcome to the NHK and Gankutsuou (neither of which I've yet seen), which is...something, I guess.

I hope they somehow find a way to make it so that you need a Wii U to watch it, just for the lols.

Yes, let's make a narrative driven experience out of this cluster of nonsense.

Because we've never seen that in anime before, right? :D
OT, I dunno I'm not too fussed I liked Bayonetta for what it was I thought it was hilarious, so I kinda am curious to see what they're going to do with this anime, and if it makes it to NA and gets localised hopefully they have the same English Voiceactors. (can't believe I said that) I usually had English dubs of anime :/

Eh, I liked Bayonetta, and I'll probably give it a watch just for that.
That said, I don't exactly have high hopes.

I love Bayonetta, but I really don't dig the art style of the anime.
It looks pornographic to me I can't explain it.

Same, their pacing is not my thing.

Should be interesting. Lots of big names behind this anime (then again which anime doesn't have big names), but as we've seen in Japanese productions those don't always translate out to be masterpieces.

Time will tell, I welcome ALL anime and will happily give this one a chance :)

If it looks pornographic to you then you CAN explain it, that's simply...err...you :p

I liked Bayonetta, but I wouldn't say its story was the selling point. As such, I'm not sure the anime is going to be any good. Unless they step up the writing, I don't see this as genre defining and more just possibly middling.

At the moment, I can't really add anything of importance to this conversation other than the visual style reminds of Vampire Hunter D or Aeon Flux

This is going to suck just like the Devil May Cry anime and for the exact same reasons. They are going to take out all the fun over the top silliness that made the game fun and what you will be left with is a generic action anime with a generic protagonist. Only Bayonetta will show her ass more often, and her ass with probably have better characterization than she does.

I suppose I will try!

It's the explicit rendering of shadows (normal anime has simpler shading), dark tone, high contrast cell-shading, the way it shines and glitters (especially the lips), the way they draw the characters with high noses and puffy lips, its focus on sensual shots... yada yada.

I know Bayonetta is supposed to be a bit sexy, but the framerates of the anime really emphasises it.

This looks... OK. Not great, not grand, I've certainly watched worse. That said, they're going to have to try to make the story line make more sense (good luck!), and I'm not holding out high hopes.

You must not have seen much ecchi because that's actually pretty tame compared to some of the stuff you see in Freezing or Seikon no Qwaser.

While I liked Bayonetta, the story made no sense. But who cares about Bayonetta right now, there's a [a href"=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=15344"]BlazBlue anime[/a] coming!

A bit sexy? It's Bayonetta. I'd say Yahtzee describes her best:

"The level of the sexualization going into this game is nothing short of shameless. Talk about it being "ironic" all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that someone's rubbing themselves off to it even as we speak. Everything Bayonetta does is fetishized. She wears glasses, sucks on Chupa Chups, uses BDSM techniques as special attacks, and occasionally all her clothes fly off and hairy monsters appear. Fuck, I've gone out with girls like that.

That art style reminds me of Hellsing Ultimate, lots of sharp lines/edges, dark tones and shadows. Or maybe I'm thinking of Bible Black, that awesome hentai anime...hehehe. I just hope it fits with the tone of the anime, for me it's all about maintaining a consistent tone to go with the plot/character/settings.

As for the "high noses, puffy lips", the primary protagonists/antagonists are supposed to be rather "royal" and dignified right? Bayonetta's ingame english voice actor made her sound like some kind of queen.

I watched shows like Seikon no Qwaser or Queen's blade before. The action and the fanservice, sure, but the style doesn't look pornographic to me.

Ah, I'm not sexually attracted to women, so Bayonetta's sexiness is kinda lost on me. I find her pretty and playful instead. I understand how people can find her sexy though! And her English accent was very easy on the ears.

Gonzo made Afro Samurai and Highlanders too. I just don't dig this style very much I guess? Still gonna watch it though, because Bayonetta!

What I meant by puffy lips was the effort they put in rendering the lips.
