I'm straight, and I actually have to say my favorite thing I've seen about Bayonetta was the soundtrack; it had a cool retro feel, if what I heard was actually from the finished game. Maybe it's just that Bayonetta looks like Sarah Palin that her feminine wiles don't work on me.
that's weird, I'm straight and the soundtrack from bayonetta is one of my least favorite things about the game, it's too damn feminine for my tastes. I also have to agree that I don't exactly have the hots for Bayonetta for the simple fact that (although they disappear) her clothes are extremely stupid looking.

that aside though, I'll still play it when my room mate's finished with it, but I'm personally looking forward to picking up darksiders personally.

edited my wording.

Just checked out a youtube gameplay trailer. Sounds like Darksiders is God of War meets Zelda. Darksiders it is.

Darksiders is God of War meets Zelda meets poor and outdated gameplay design that we might have put up with on the PS1.

Bayonetta is Devil May Cry evolved in combat, control, and craziness.

Get Bayonetta.

Well as it stands I've got my own opinion based on a gameplay video that appealed to me, vs you simply stating Darksiders bad, get Bayonetta instead.

I appreciate you trying to warn me off what is in your opinion a bad purchase, but your attempts aren't much good to me if you don't explain.

Try giving examples of what is so outdated and poorly designed.

I got Bayonetta this morning. Didn't get the replica gun with it though because apparently delivery vans are foiled by half and inch of snow. Darksiders isnt for me really. I've lost my interest in RPGs really...except Borderlands...

The climbing mechanic is one good example. You can climb things, but you can only climb special "demonic growth", which means, basically, you can't really climb things.

I remember putting up with that kind of nonsense on Soul Reaver and Spyro back on the PS1, but it's really archaic design, incorporating a thing which is a "Special Climbable Element" which doesn't make intuitive sense (why only demonic growth?) only serves to highlight the arbitrary restriction the designers chose to place on you to impede your progress.

Also, the balance of combat to exploration is off, there's far too much of the former, and it's not the strength of the genre. People love Zelda because of the exploration and the gradual opening up of the gameworld in intuitive ways by the new items and abilities Link gains (which is also why the spinner in TP is a poor Zelda item, see above).

I have both but Bayonetta is second to be played after Darksiders. I love Darksiders so far, I love it, it controls amazingly, it has everything I liked about Zelda but nothing I didn't. It's so well done and styled.

Bayonetta looks amazing as well and has me eager to move on to that

Edit: I won't vote because I've bet to really get into Bayonetta. I will say Darksiders is incredible though.

I cannot vote on this issue since I've only played the demo of Bayonetta thus far, but I can tell you about Darksiders since I already finished that one.

- Action RPG (very few NPCs though since humanity's been wiped out)
- simple but well-told story
- rocking' artwork throughout (they brought in Joe Madureira for that)
- nice variety in design (environments and enemies)
- excellent voice-acting (incudes performances by Liam O'Brien, Phil Lamarr and Mark Hamill)
- good controls, fairly simple to pull off combos
- plays like a Zelda game for grown-ups (open world exploration via a somewhat linear storyline, thematic dungeons with lots of puzzles, special items that allow for exploration of different parts of the map, hunting for hidden goodies of all kinds, ...)
- combat works well, fast-paced without being hectic, one main weapon and two secondary weapons, tactics and use of special items often required for harder enemies (imagine that, you actually have to use your brain in combat...)
- upgrade shop combined with fast-travel system
- 15 to 25 hours of gameplay

I really only have two gripes with this game:

- bland soundtrack
- not a lot of replay value

Other than that, I had a lot of fun with Darksiders and found it an excellent game to ring in 2010. In summary, this game is Zelda meets God of War meets Soul Reaver meets Portal (yes, I said Portal) and if you think this mix has potential, then go for it.

Word of caution: I cannot confirm this myself, but I've heard that there's a fair amount of tearing on the X360 version... I only have the PS3 version, and there's almost none of that there.

I've got to say the whole climbing thing sounds like nitpicking to me. I know we live in an age where games let you go everywhere and do everything but that doesn't mean they all need to.
This demonic growth stuff you talk about seems just a way to scale walls/obstacles without having to put stairs everywhere, or making everything scaleable (and thus increasing the area needing development needlessly). It certainly doesn't sound anything like the huge deal you make it out to be.

As for the lack of exploration, I admit I find it odd that you say that since the claim was that almost everywhere that could be explored would hold a secret.

Either way, I still feel like Darksiders may be preferred over Bayonetta. If only because I'm not too sure I like the idea of potentially cracking a fat on a constant basis whilst trying to play a game. Also whilst I'm sure its great in terms of gameplay, it just doesn't seem to be my style, seems a bit too fast for my liking and I suck badly enough at games that run at normal speeds.

I'll certainly be looking into it before I make any decisions (I've only just bought a 60GB PS3 off Ebay with 7 games for AU$640 and havn't picked it up yet) but thanks for the advice nonetheless.

Y'ever hear of a ladder? That's the thing, ladders, handholds in rock, things like that are intuitive to the player, so they don't appear to be "arbitrary climbable surface".

Except you've got to do a lot of hacking through enemies whilst you "explore", and it's nowhere near as developed a hack and slash as Bayonetta.

Bayonetta looks like a Devil May Cry game with titties and guns on her feet. So, for diversity's sake, I'd say that you should get Darksiders and pick up a DMC game for a cheap price. (I recommend DMC 3 highly.)
you just sold Bayonetta to me =)

anyway, I will eventually try both

Having played Bayonetta for a few hours I can gladly say that Bayonetta is simply amazing.

I can't compare it to Darksiders, but even though many people are saying good things about Darksiders it is not holding my attention very well, there is nothing that seems to draw me to it, whereas Bayonetta has nice visuals, a reasonably good soundtrack, great gameplay with fluid and fast paced combat, if you put some thought into your attacks you can string together amazing looking combos and moves that string together fluidly and smoothly, making it seem absolutely brilliant.

Oh, and to the person saying "They have a one-button mode" - it's a "1-hand mode", which originated in the Devil May Cry series, and it is in Bayonetta because some of the developers who worked on DMC are working on Bayonetta, plus it is only available on the Very-Easy and Easy modes, and only for people who want to use it, So you can't really mention that as something against the game.

if you're like me then you will get a thrill out of managing to link together a solid combo that looks badass and delivers the goods to your enemies, so i would go with bayonetta, because DMC n I have had a good run =)

You totally screwed that quote up love. Anyway, im sure i could get someone to track down a reasonably cheap pair lol. And if they don't exist, ill find someone who can design and make them at least reasonably close to the originals.
