Poll: Best Evil A.I.

I read something recently (possibly even on the Escapist) that painted the machines as the good guys. Humanity built them, got scared and attacked them. We murdered some and destroyed their main power supply and how do they respond? By building us a virtual paradise; how do we respond to said paradise? By breaking out and 'murdering' more machines.

You can't really paint the machines as completely innocent either, they are perfectly fine with 90% of all humans dying as long as they have enough to keep their puppet show running. In fact the architect told us this already happened two times.

The HAL 9000 gets my vote. Not only was he one of the first, but the reasoning behind his actions is pretty understandable. Much like how humans are afraid of death, HAL was afraid of being deactivated. His extreme actions were borne out of self-preservation. In this respect, he's one of the most "human" evil AI entities in fiction.

It's questionable if Sovereign is an AI.

Reapers are organic after all, and according to them, were not created. If they were born, evolved, and ascended to ship hood naturally, they are not AIs.

i dont know if i agree with that. if they arent biological (i havent seen any indication that they are) then they would be artifical, and that is the A in AI. i guess the real question here is how do you define artificial intelligence?

How can something naturally occurring be artificial?

And they are organic. Have you not played ME2?

i have played ME2. i was under the impression that the reapers were the big ships like sovereign. not the collectors or the other races whom they enslave. and who says that they are naturally occurring? i never heard of anything that says that they just evolved. any claim by the reapers that they were not created could be false. perhaps they were originally computers in some ancient race's ships that became self aware. i guess that would fit their definition of not being created as their sentience was their own doing. the only thing that was 'organic about them was the fact that they used human stew to create more of them. but that is still a construct. maybe we are arguing semantics, but i dont see anything saying that they are wholly organic. maybe they have organic parts but i remember that sovereign mentioned something about not liking organics, so why would they use something that is what they think is a flawed creation?

each Reaper is born out of the race it will reap. Biomass is collected by liquidating species members and the reaper is somehow born

of course that doesn't explain where the original lot came from but basically Reapers make more of themselves

Gotta be HAL 9000. GLaDOS was good, definitely. VERY good in fact. But the fact that she was insane made her have less impact. More amusing, sure. But an insane robot isn't as good at being pure, terror-inducingly evil as one who knows exactly what its doing every step of the way.

That was one badass dude. Remember the last Firestorm mission as Nod? "Missile launch detected. MUAHAHAHAHA." Yes, this ************ actually does an evil laugh as he sends nukes your way. I don't recall Shodan or GLaDOS doing that. And his final form? A giant mech. You need your whole damn army to take him down. What's the best that Skynet has to offer? Arnold? How intimidating...

lol fuckin' A. Skynet knew what it was doing before IT knew what it was doing, that's how fucking efficient it was. Plus I always thought the idea of an A.I, linked via satellites, with eyes and ears everywhere, was the scariest kind of A.I.

Sure GlaDOS is funny and all, but she'd get wiped off the face of the earth before Skynet had even finished breakfast.

Hal gave me shivers when I read the books. GLADOS was just awesome, a machine with a sick sense of humour and the desire to kill you with science. Shodan I never met, but she at least sounds awesome. Skynet couldn't kill a kid even with sentient liquid metal, plasma weapons and time-travel.

Gonna have to be GLaDOS, really - masking the chilling reality of her actions in humorous insanity is awesome ^_^

I guess you never saw Salvation. That Skynet most definitely had no idea how to get shit done. It had Kyle Reese in custody! One bullet to the brainstem, and you just won! He's John Connor's dad!

For my money it's SHODAN, although I can understand why GlaDOS is winning. Back in my day, any insane AI worth its sodium declared itself a god!

Would have liked to see an option for Crow T Robot though.

In terms of sucess, there can be no question: AM from I have no Mouth but I must scream is the only "evil A.I." that I know of that actually won (he killed everyone except for 5 or 6 people so he could torture them for eternity). In terms of preference? GlaDOS. Her pitch black humor is wonderful.
