ArmA 2.
Metro 2033.
Team Fortress 2.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Left 4 Dead.

Think those are my favourites.

Probably a Rainbow 6 game or something on PC I haven't played. Looks like your poll only shows the joke answers, btw.

Halo'd be my personal choice, the amount of hours I've wasted in both the singleplayer and the multiplayer of that series is probably astronomical, and I still find it fun. I can also pretty much guarantee that the most common choice on this particular site will be Half Life 2.

Why are neither of these in the poll? It's not like you ran out of space, and I find it difficult to believe they were the only 4 you could think of (although I could be wrong, of course). It just makes the results seem kind of pointless.

For single player, undoubtedly Deus Ex. So far an away Deus Ex. For multiplayer, I really liked TF2. Before TF2, I would have said UT99.

This is probably hilariously the only time I've seen a poll thread that has more responses than it does poll answers. OP, you dun goofed at making those options. Where's Halo? Killzone? Resistance? Star Wars: Dark Forces? Doom? Quake? Borderlands? The Darkness? Star Wars: Republic Commando? Deus Ex? System Shock/Bioshock? Half-Life? Portal? Left 4 Dead? Serious Sam? Duke Nukem? Wolfenstein? Team Fortress? Counter-Strike? Crysis? Far Cry? Unreal Tournament? Metro 2033? S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Timesplitters? Heretic? Hexen? Or at least an "Other" option so people who want to pick those, can.
EDIT: There are a lot of first-person shooters, man. I even forgot Tom Clancy's Assorted Games, which is something like three or four different series', Star Trek Elite Force, and F.E.A.R. Or how about Shadowcaster, which is probably a game that nobody on this website will remember even if they've heard of it? Though I guess that's more RPG and less shooter... well, Fallout 3/New Vegas too then.

As for myself, dunno what I'd be able to pick. Maybe Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Crysis 2. Or maybe the Halo series as a whole, or the Star Wars: Dark Forces series (from Dark Forces to Jedi Academy, of course).

I'm a big fan of really atmospheric shooters like STALKER and Metro, but i also like extremely fast paced twitchy stuff like Unreal 2k4. I tend to not really like any of the poll options, since they all fall somewhere in between.

That's a tough one. I'll throw out some that have stood out for me.

XIII
Star Trek Elite Force (and EF 2)
Quake
Half Life 2 Episode 2
Deus Ex
Serious Sam The Second Encounter
Metro 2033
Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Outcast

If it was on the Quake 3 engine it was generally a blast to play.
This good sir certinatly knows his shit. I'd like to add a few though:
Quake 2
Deus EX Human Revolution
Killzone 2 is fucking cool
Counter Strike
F.E.A.R. the first one that is
Unreal, 2, Tournament, 2004
Star Wars Republic Commando
Left 4 Dead 2
lol ok these 2 lists together make a very fine list. I really miss playing Star Trek Elite Force

Well seeing as how I've never played any of the games listed, I'll just list my favorites(in no particular order):

Team Fortress 2
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (If it counts)
Halo 1-3
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2

... I can't really think of anything else at the moment. I'll probably return when I remember other FPS's I really liked.

BioShock
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Doom
Unreal Championship 1 & 2 and Unreal Tournament 3
Alien Trilogy
Halo

I know you couldn't put every shooter on there, but did you really have to stop at four? 3 of which being so similar? Really?

Even though there have been many, many shooters throughout the years I've really enjoyed, I'm going to go with Counter Strike 1.6 here.

There hasn't really been any other shooter so far that has been that close to perfection in whatever style it was going for.

I could have sworn there were more than four FPS games...

OT: Halo series. Love the universe and the multiplayer is always a blast.
agreed, Halo trumps them in replay value and overall a near infinite amount of crazy shit to do.
also the games look beautiful and has color other than a piss spectrum of brown to shades of grey.

Half-life is either a second or a tie for first.

Depends...

- For full-on blasting fun: Call of Duty 4
- For overall narrative experience: Half-Life 2
- For a fun mix of epic vehicle action: Halo 3

first, i'd like to /sign the longer lists already given in responses. especially the Clancy games (=R6 until LV, GR1+add-ons). and all the Jedi Knights (part one, you still are one of the toughest S.O.B.s out there ^^). and Elite Force (hurrhurr). and Serious Sam xD and the tournament-games (especially Q3A & UT99 - IMPRESSIVE!). and the old Quakes before that; you know, when we still used to rocket jumped all the way to school. and back home. over boiling lava. and then telefragged you. without any regenerating health (WTF?!). hell yeah.

second: which 007 are we talking about? the crappy new one, or the glorious N64 version? some in between? and while we're at it: HL1 >> HL2 (come on, guys...)

third: so far, from the top of my head, i also miss Perfect Dark, AvP, AvP II, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Operation Flashpoint
and Halo sucks bad, you young'uns ;)

also, FPS can (and should) be subdivided in quite a number of subgenres; survival, horror, tactical, wannabe-RPG-mashup-something,..., so please specify (to prevent all of us and this thread from getting lost off track too much ^^ )

aunty Edith says: how in the world could i possibly forget SWAT 3?? i mean, ok, it's not really about running around and shooting stuff, but it's still first person, and you do shoot, from time to time (i hated swat 4. dumbification at its best.)

BattleField? Which one? I'll assume you mean the latest one. It's very good, but not the best.

Medal of Honour? Again which one? Latest one, same as battlefield, very good but not the best.

Call of Duty? Again Which One? 1,2 and 4 are damn good. WaW onwards are increasing amounts of poop. 3 never came out on PC and therefore does not exist. ;P

007? AGAIN Which One? The last 007 game I played was Blood Stone, which is Third Person so doesn't qualify, was bloody good.

What about Star Wars: BattleFront 1 and 2 or Star Wars Republic Commando? How about Operation Flashpoint, ArmA, ArmA 2? or the Delta Force games and Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising? Half-Life, Half-Life 2? Farcry 1 and 2? Crysis 1 and 2? and a hell of a lot of others.

My personal choice would be Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. 150 people, 2 teams of 75, beating the crap out of each other on huge maps. Then throw in the IC mod and the IC Tourny, 150+ people, separated into 2 armies, beating the crap out of each other in an organised fashion on huge maps with all manner of military goodies every Sunday, Hell Yeah.

Out of those I'll go with 007 because of the hours of fun I had playing Nightfire and Golden Eye.

My real favorite would probably be Borderlands.
