Poll: Best FPS ever?

My favorite is easily the original Halo.

Especially now that I just recently got a tube TV. I've been using flatscreens for a few years now, and the original Halo just isn't balanced for them; comparatively speaking, it feels sluggish, looks wonky, and sounds awful on them. On a tube, it's crisp, it looks good, and its audio balance sounds a hundred times better (no exaggeration there at all; flatscreen speakers cause music-sfx clashing in HCE in places where, on a tube, the sounds flow together perfectly).

Half-Life 2 would possibly be a runner up if I had to nominate something.

I don't want to start a flame war or anything but an 83 out of 100 on metacritic isn't lukewarm. It's not great, but it certainly ism't lukewarm, just saying.
I meant by players.
In terms of sales and general popularity, the PC version was all but a flop.
Especially considering the PR the game already had.

Metroid Prime.
It took shooters, which became too standard and serious, and made an actual game out of it.
Combining new elements from the platforming, but not losing focus of being a shooter.

You and I could have some very interesting discussions on shooters, you know...
Is that "interesting discussions" as in sitting in high-backed chairs, smoking pipes and drinking old Scotch or are we talking pistols at dawn here?
The former. Definitely the former. I haven't finished Far Cry 2 but I see it as a sort of a flawed masterpiece, and I have the same history with UT's bots, which I think are probably the best bots ever.

Probably Medal of Honor: Frontline. It wasn't online, but the 4 player FFA consumed a lot of my time about 8 years ago.

Totally agree. UT's bots have such incredible AI that it's a pity so few other games care about AI these days, what with it mostly being triggered and all. Throughout UT, UT 2003/4, UT3 there have been certain bots which I've hated more than people. Locke, Arachne and Gorge especially. Turning the difficulty up to Adept or higher on the bombing run map Snowfields (I think, it was one of the 2 snow levels) and it was almost impossible to win. You'd need to fight down a corridor while holding the ball (so unable to fire), killing every bot on their team only to have them respawn ahead of you and come at you again, sometimes multiple times. The only way to score a goal (typically by firing it in as the other option was even closer to impossible) was to fill up the Adrenaline, find some armor + thigh pads and as many health vials as you could find. And even then you had to be at the top of your game. Just describing it makes me want to play it again.

Far Cry 2 is definitely a flawed gem, or in Diablo 2 terms a Flawless gem. There are 101 little things I would change with it, such as allowing you to 'hire' one of your mercenary acquaintances as a companion to help you (say for 1 diamond per hour/day) by manning the vehicles gun, say. Or increasing the checkpoint respawn times slightly. As I said, 101 little things; but it does so much right. The freedom of the game, the variety, feel & sound of the weapons, the variable AI, the graphics and environment, the disparity between difficulty levels, the incredible unscripted firefights, the tension from ill-timed gun jamming or high-speed car chases. Even the unforgiving stealth mechanics are a thing I've grown to love.

I could go on all day, but instead I'll throw out two other favourite FPS games of mine to see if we still agree: Tribes Vengeance and Call of Duty 2

Haha, for a moment I was like 'WHAT!? No Counter Strike!?' then I saw Half Life '98, so its all good. I was also concerned for a moment that ME wasn't on there, but that is really an RPG, so fair call (However, you included Deus Ex?). I think without Half Life, there would've been the need for something else of significant magnitude to get the gaming industry to this point, in terms of popularity of FPS.

Perfect Dark. The guns are very satisfying to use and they have nice weight to them, It has great combat and that's all I really want from an FPS.

Duke Nukem 3D is a close contender though...

I am going to cast my vote for Halo 2. The multi-player in that game is simply sublime, the campaign is not half bad either.

Halo is my favorite. I replayed the original Halo last week and it was just as fun as I remember...

for that list, HL2. for real, system shock 2.

half life was TOTALLY the same basic shooter shit you did in duke nukem or doom, but i think why so many (like me) think its so great is that it polishes that basic gameplay to PERFECTION, unlike modern shooters that just slap some iron-sights on everything and call it a day.

Perfect Dark. It's my favorite.
This^. I realize it is very similar to Goldeneye 007, but it is still my favorite. I bought it originally on N64, then again on Xbox 360.

Doesn't seem fair to do Half-life and Half life 2.

But my Absolute favorite has to be Call of Duty 4, By far.
