Battlefield 1942 with the mod DC Final.

After that I would probably say either Bad Company 1 or 2
Yeah, '42 would be my best game, except I bought it so late that I could never find a good game online, thus I was reduced to playing against the shitty bots...

I would say...

For Fun: Modern Warfare 2 - Hey, the set pieces are epic, it has Ghost in it, the MP is amazingly addictive, it has Price in it and the sound track is truly amazing.
For MP: Bad Company 2 - I actually almost never 'rage' at Bad Coy at all.
For SP: Fallout NV - Whaat? It is kinda an FPS!
For 'other': Halo Reach - 'Cmon, Firefight AND Forge!

I also wish that not only could hang gliders ride the occasional thermal to stay aloft, but we should have been able to climb onto the hills that seperate all the valleys the roads go through. That way we could observe a hostile base right up from the high mountains and plan our assault. I was also a bit disappointed that the big mountain in the north area was off limits.
...
Hehe- I've got COD2 on lend from a friend and am chipping away at it these days. I really loved one part in the desert where you look up at a distant sand dune and see a whole wave of Germans running towards your settlement, and you've only got your bolt-action handy...

I only played Vengeance once at a LAN where there was some prize up for grabs for who could win a game of Rabbit. I did enjoy skiing quite a lot, but I've always been more of a Battlefield 1942 man. To date I've never seen any other game (not even UT2004) get the balance of vehicles against each other and infantry just right. It was clearly a fluke though, as none of the subsequent Battlefields have come close to balancing it right. (Or even having a similar number of units)
I was always a bit disappointed that you couldn't climb up the bigger ridges and so got a bit invisible-walled. Also I wish there was a 'clamber' button so you can get over little piles of rocks which can sometimes be just slightly too big to jump over. But I can see why you aren't allowed to climb the bigger hills, as then the game turns into a walk in the park with a sniper rifle. More so than it can be already.

Always hated that level in CoD2 as your teammates are just so ineffective. In the end it's you against everyone coming at you from everywhere. Until you get to go to the roof of a building, then it becomes a lot more fun. The game has some incredible set pieces though, and I just find it infinitely more fun than the recent CoD games.

Never played BF1942, not much of a multiplayer gamer beyond some TF2 (which I haven't played in years now). I saw a friend play BF2 once and it seemed to involve waiting around for a vehicle which someone else always steals. Almost all the UT I did was offline or coop because the bots were so good. Malcolm only ever pissed me off when he was on a team. By himself it was always easy. Xan would fuck me right up though, especially as I hate the map you fight him on (Hyperblast?).
Tribes Vengeance I played for the singleplayer which was a fantastic space opera. Everything was brightly coloured and clear, moving about was great because of the skiing, jetpacks and grappler, the weapons were fun and the missions quite varied (with the giant outdoor maps being the best). The story was actually quite fun with some nice twists as well. But it got released in the same year as a certain HL2 and Tribes veterens hated the game before it was even released because it was trying to be more accessible.

Damn thats a hard one. I have to say Bioshock 1 and only 1 not 2 I didn't like that one I didn't vote half life because I just started playing it and I'm not sure if it's that good.

Metroid Prime is my favorite game mentioned...but I wouldn't say its the best shooting. Proberly Modern Warfare, but GoldenEyes gets the vote on the list.

I'd have to go with the original Quake. I played the shit out of this game when I was 8, and still love playing it. It has such an awesome atmosphere to it, and killing chainsaw wielding ogres with nails just doesn't get old.

Too many ways to qualify 'best.'

Most influential? Probably Doom or Wolfenstein
Most fun? Depends entirely on your perception
Best story? Depends entirely on how you like your stories to be told, as well as whether you actually like the story being told
Replay value? there are some people who hate online multiplayer (myself included), and some people who would never replay a single player campaign ever (not myself included)

So in lieu of any way to reasn=onably assert any sort of dominance I would say that for me the only two First Person Shooters which keep me coming back to them again and again are the Halo series in its entirety and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. They aren't even the best FPSs I've played, but for fun, replay value even in single player, story and even influential, if you count the ways Halo changed the industry (for better or worse don't argue) then actually I'd say Halo kind of comes out on top for me.

Blood.

Oh god that game is awesomely creepy.

basically, duke nukem 3d as a horror game.

and yes, it worked!

EDIT: oh and BTW, game changer should not count AT ALL when it comes to this poll.

prime example? Quake. Oh my god that game is fucking awful, I appreciate the innovation, but does hold up?

NO.

NO IT DOES NOT. ITS DOOM, WITHOUT THE COLOR, MUSIC, OR CREATIVITY.

Half-Life 2. Yep, Valve fanboy through and through.

Honestly though, I have yet to encounter another game that did characters and atmosphere as well as it did.

Half Life 2.

Fucking groundbreaking game for it's time, and it still looks damn good to this day.

Counter Strike Source coming in second.

People have actually voted for bioshock? Really...what the fuck people, has nobody here heard of system shock?!

I'm torn, it would have to be one of dues ex, crysis, half life, counterstrike (I actually hated it but it's impossible to deny it's significance), call of duty (1 with UO expansion or 2, everything since has been tripe), wolfenstein 3d, painkiller, dystopia[footnote]Yes, it's a mod...but it's fucking amazing[/footnote] or unreal tournament (I count the series as a single entity). Oh, and of course halo would be up there (have we moved passed hating halo yet or do I need to spell out what made that game techincally great), and I feel dirty for not mentioning stalker.

Half-Life 2, since I don't count Deus Ex as an FPS.

Crysis would get a vote near the top as well - heavily underrated for the most part.
Wait....I'm used of being the only person to have appreciated crysis, what is this witchcraft :S

Dear god all the kids saying bioshock and half life 2, I must be old I remember half life and system shock:S

Pretty pissweak on my part to have not thought of tribes :S That game was unbelievably good, especially for it's time.

Am I the only person who was slightly insulted by the poll by not having (IMO) the best FPS ever: Counter Strike?

I've played CS: Source and it was a huge improvement to the previous CS for graphics and all around game play.

So yeah, #1 FPS ever created is Counter Strike and the best expansion, which wasn't really an expansion; Counter Strike: Source.

That is my opinion. aka I'm a PC gamer more than a platform base player.

Like the OP said, there's various subgenres...

Some of my favorites include...

Arena FPSs: Q3A, UT
Narrative FPSs: Farcry, Crysis, Prey
Experimental FPSs: Metroid Prime, Mirror's Edge, The Ball
Tactical FPSs: ArmA II, Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow 6
FPS/RPG: System Shock II, Deus Ex
MMOFPS: Global Agenda, Tribes 2, Planetside
"Classic" FPS: Duke 3D, Doom: The Plutonia Experiment
Team-Based FPS: TF2, Battlefield 1942, UT2K4 (assault mode, mods, etc)

I have played many more and I'm not exactly how to characterize certain things (Shattered Steel/Shogo are FPSs, but they're also Mech games, sorta? Same with Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri...)

If I had to pick just ONE, I would probably go with Deus Ex because it's so much different as opposed to any other FPS I've ever played. That said, I also like Deus Ex: Invisible War, I loved Goldeneye 007/Perfect Dark (I thought Perfect Dark was better tbh, loved them both though), and it's tough not having return to castle wolfenstein on here, or enemy territory for that matter, or even wolf 3D, but really, I like too many FPS games to just have one favorite or "Best ever."

Again, if you want to go to "best ever" in innovation, I'd probably go to Duke 3D. The interactivity was staggering, the build engine was incredible, destructible walls, moving subways, elevators, a shit ton of types of doors (doom only had one kind of door), you could jump, you could duck, you could fly, you had an inventory (Yes I know Heretic and Hexen had that first), you had 10 weapons, many of which were unique and interesting and interactive (Freeze someone then kick them into shattered pieces, shrink someone then step on them), etc...

And Tier Drops is just SUCH AN UNBELIEVABLE map, when it comes to use of the engine and multiplayer flow, I just don't even know what to say. I love Duke3D. But whatever. Halflife 2 is probably the best "Narrative Experience" but if you had to play 3 games on that list, they should be Deus Ex, Metroid Prime, and System Shock 2. (Yes, I liked Bioshock, but it was basically SS2 made easier and simpler but prettier. Would have preferred a SS3.)

Anyone remember Hexen/Heretic? Hahaha.
Some of the greatest and most innovative FPS games I've ever played. Hexen even had a class-based system, and I've been through the game with all 3 classes a couple times. Working through on a Cleric again, but haven't touched it in a few days.

But yeah, they were the first games to have inventory systems I think, and you'd think with the popularity of WoW and shit, that there would be more "Fantasy" themed FPS games. I would kill to see a remake of Hexen with new effects. Their sprites are beautiful, drawn so well that they still stand up today, but it would just be incredible to see it in the Unreal 3 engine or Cryengine 3 or something.

Arma 2 series, because its whatever the fuck I want it to be with mods. Who doesn't like mowing down goats with miniguns with Battlestar Vipers.
