Haha, for a moment I was like 'WHAT!? No Counter Strike!?' then I saw Half Life '98, so its all good. I was also concerned for a moment that ME wasn't on there, but that is really an RPG, so fair call (However, you included Deus Ex?). I think without Half Life, there would've been the need for something else of significant magnitude to get the gaming industry to this point, in terms of popularity of FPS.
ME is actually a TPS/RPG, so wouldn't qualify for this list.

Resistance: Fall of Man. Hands down. In a sea of modern first person shooters ALL following the same stupid trends of modern generation, Resistance (the first one) was a shining gem that gave a middle finger to all of that.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion - That's why I'm claiming Unreal Tournament as the best ever with several close runners up, such as Halo 3 and CoD 4 & TF2.

But what I want answered is - why are people putting MW2 as the best FPS ever, when I can factually prove it is one of the worst games ever made (opinion :p)?
(Including freeware, demos and interactive videos)

The hype was fantanstic, the first few days were great... but then it dawned on me that the campaign just sucked, mainly the part where it didn't quite tie in with itself, let alone MW1.

So, I tried spec ops with a buddy. It was average; no pros, no cons. I enjoyed what little it was.

Now for the thing we were all waiting for, the multiplayer.
Firing up online, I kicked ass with the M16's 1 shots... then decided it was overpowered, unfair and gamebreaking. Using the FAL instead; I managed to continue playing with only a bit of raging: M16's, super-explosive noob tubes, commando knife's like the user is fucking superman kinda' bollocked up what could've been a great game. Somehow, the gametypes also flopped: S&D - killed by starting tubes. Demolition - good concept, failed in general (how can scoring 4/6 bombs in a game make you lose?). FFA - boosting whores. TDM - shit spawns, op weapons vs. useless weapons, glitched lobbies, broken maps, stupidly broken hit detection.
This game hold now holds a title for killing most of my brain cells from pure, blind rage.

I tried sniping at one point, it went pretty well. I picked off the 12 year old campers and charged around the map wielding a 6 ft sniper at my hip like Mr T and a minigun. But that got boring pretty quickly. So I started using the riot shield with equipment. It can be truely touching when the only unity online os from a final kill cam on me, where my attacker shoots me through the bullet proof cevlar or knifes me without any contact 3 ft away and everybody in the lobby responds with a 'what the fuck?'.

All problems fall into one sentence. The game was just a complete catastrophe.

TL;DR (shortcut)
Where Halo aspires to balanced gameplay and CoD 4 uses it as a guideline, MW2 was anything but. Actually, it was next to nothing. It was about as lively as a cremated corpse in an incinerator, where the only thing resembling something it should have been, is that charred hand poking out of the mound of well-done body.

Bottom Line: The game was a sequal to a god, but was as much of a god as a hangover turd, in your pants.

My favourite FPS of all time, probably forever, has to be the original Unreal Game (plus the expansion). My parents dug it out of a bargain bin somewhere... and I love it. Even if I've never been able to get through the final boss without cheating like a mother...

Second favourite will be Prey. I just like it, even if most people think it's terrible.

I don't play too many FPSs though, so many seem focused on earthly wars, and I like exploring alien planets/ships (see: Unreal and Prey, lol).

... if anyone can message me some good FPS (for PC, please, I hate FPS on consoles) that fit my taste that would be nice... I miss me some FPS-ing action...

Timesplitters: Future Perfect, which is also the best multiplayer shooter imo.
Timesplitters is just dam good XD Timesplitters 2 and future perfect are a very sweet bled of all time zones in history

picture ; the mummy, halo, call of duty, the godfather, dawn of the dead, back to the future and the 80's all in one game (sounds terrible on internet paper, huh)

There is something for all in this game XD

Wow I wouldn't have guessed that Half Life 2 gets it, don't understand me wrong its a great game, but play Bioshock or Deus Ex back to back to Half life.. and you see that both are not as frantic and hectic, but more tactical and thats what I like about a game, that said Deus Ex would have taken it it, just before System shock 2, simply because Deus Ex always offers more than just one solution.

Technically yes, good point. But I mean c'mon, First vs. Third. When I first started playing ME I was annoyed I couldn't get right behind the gun, but it turns out fine, the difference is quite trivial.

Trivial, yes, but the difference is still there and that's enough to disqualify it from the list.

Which reminds me of the odd case of Fallout: NV being nominated for "best strategy game of 2010" in the BAFTAs...

Yeah, sorry, I saw no proof there, just endless complaining and ranting.

Why don't you mention dedicated servers. That seems to be irrefutable.

So, did they get zero strategy games submitted that year or something?

I presume so, because I wasn't following them - I heard it from others. Maybe the judges were just a bit unclear on genre definitions.

The other games nominated are strategy games alright.

Civilization V
FIFA Manager 11 (best game ever)
Napoleon: Total War
Plants vs. Zombies
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

Vegas is pretty much the odd one out.

Doom is fantastic, I've been unable to enjoy an FPS as much as I have Doom. I mean, I've never sat down and played the Modern Warfare or Halo 3 campaign for hours at a time. Doom is just the very essence of what FPS's are, it's nostalgic, it's action-packed, it's timeless, it's memorable (in almost every regard) etc.

Yeah, I can't really understand that. I mean... how do you classify the new Fallouts as strategy games?

Well, for starters, you control multiple units in that one... oh, wait.

It wasn't a particularly grand year for strategy games so I can kinda understand... at least it didn't win.

But, really. FIFA Manager in (which is great) and Football Manager out (which is greater)?

The problem with the BAFTA awards is that you have to actually do something to be entered into competition - that's why RDR got nothing, Rockstar refused to pay the small fee to run in the competition. Good thing, too, or another "Best Story" would've went to that average drivel.

I can only presume the same thing happened to Football Manager.

I cant be bothered to check more than the first two pages but how or why has no one mentioned Fallout3 or New Vegas? Are they not FPS? Somebody picked oblivion so I'll be damned if I cant pick FO3 or NV!
