I say Silver, 'cause I loved that generation. I have all the games except for Platinum; had Fire Red but I gave it to my girlfriend. That was the first one that i put A LOT of time into. I'd be replaying it now, but the battery in it died ='(
I voted Red, but Yellow was my second handheld game ever, and I've caught all 150 Pokemon and Mew in it. The newer ones kill the "catch 'em all" concept because not all of them are in any avalable version.
Silver Version FTW. Silver/Gold came with 3 very sweet starter pokemon espicially Cyndaquil. Plus you get to catch Lugia right away other than beating the game and getting it at 70 (I haven't played that game for so long so I don't remember). Silver/Gold's story was really good and introduced alot of new things for the Pokemon series like the breeding, dark and steel types, the clock, rematches against trainers even though there was a set amount of trainers you can refight when they are ready, and I liked having to hunt down the 3 rare dog pokemon, Raikou, Suicine and Entei, while they run across the map. It was also really sweet that you got to go back to Red/Blue's world and rechallenge some of the old gym leaders including Blue as the replacement of Giovanni. Let's not forgot the final trainer Red. I'm seriously excited about the remake which I really hope comes out soon so I don't have to find the Gamecube versions of the Pokemon games in order to get Lugia and Ho-oh.
Although I liked the ability to travel between Kanto and Johto in Gold/Silver/Crystal, I loved Saphire. I think they did something else right with it.
Also Platinum. I thought I'd hate it (Hardly any original Pokemon, new places, etc) but I loved it for some reason.
That said, my team is mostly Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon like Kadabra and Yanmega

Gold for me... The Gold/Silver/Crystal series had the coolness of the original, but with a much improved backpack, which was awesome. Also, the Shiny Pokemon were neat. Gold only slightly edged out Silver in my opinion because it had Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, and Arcanine.
