I don't know about you guys, but there's actually a company near me where a couple friends work where they get paid to beta test
Sounds more like they are game testers, and its a far worse job than simply playing a Beta...at least in Beta's you can treat it somewhat as a demo instead of forcing yourself to focus entirly on bugs...

What I want to know is, when did gamers start beta testing for free? We used to get paid to beta test software and even hardware.

I recently got invited to a beta test for an upcoming game but if there's no reimbursement (payment or at least a discount when the game gets released) why am I going to go through all the frustrations. Sure I can see the idea that it's kind of like a free demo but there's a difference. Usually there are quite a few problems with the beta and you may end up spending a lot of time just trying to get the software to work.

For me, it's not worth it, I'd rather just wait for the demo or rent the game when the complete version hits. What about you?
I was beta testing 'for free' with GAME SPY years ago. I'd still do it but the download times are just becoming stupid, and I can't be bothered to pay for their membership. Yes some people PAY to beta test things.

But then again these games are usually OK anyway, hell the ones I played were better than some finished games coming out now V_V.

Way they tell it, it's a pretty kick ass job. Mostly non-mainstream games, but they have fun with it.

These supposed "Betas" that developers are allowing players to take part of, are most likely not really betas, but rather some release candidate version. The developers have real testers who get paid to beta-test the game.

However, release candidates may have minor bugs, so the developers let a select amount of players "beta-test" their release candidate, thus making the "beta-testers" feel kind of "special", which results in the players getting "attached" to the developer, and almost guaranteeing that they will buy the game upon release, so it's more of a marketing strategy than proper beta testing.

So you're saying it's when the publisher needs a bigger marketing boost than a demo.
That kind of makes sense but wouldn't they also want to release a demo eventually anyway, most of these "beta tested" games don't.

I will gladly beta test everything that Valve puts out. From the little patches, to their games, for free.

I'd prefer to play the game when it comes out. I'm not that much of a "I MUST HAVE NOW" guy.

The people in a company doing QA are different from volunteer beta testers. I thought most volunteer beta testers who don't work for the game company or are part of a testing service - I thought they played for free.

It seems to me that there are several kinds of beta tests. There's the beta test where you are testing an incomplete version of the game. There's also something called a beta test that seems more like getting into a game that's getting ready to be released - a preview or load testing. Aion seems like that. The betas for Aion feel like you are getting a preview of a game that is mostly done.

I was a volunteer beta tester for an online game that failed (several times actually, two publishers) - Uru. I was one of the first 100 to be let into the second beta test - the first test with outside players was very small, and started early in the development process - more an alpha test. in the Uru beta I was in, we tested incomplete versions of the game, but versions that had the basic game functionality. We logged bugs and we talked about what was working for us, not working, all that.

People sometimes talked about how much work it is was, also the work in being a volunteer forum moderator - I was that too, for several years. But you know, those volunteer experiences were fun, seeing the game before release and feeling like you were a part of something. People varied in how much they logged on, how or if they tested, and how many bugs they logged. I think it has to be fun - it's a volunteer thing. When you depend on volunteers, you can't make people do what they don't want to do.

Let me know when it's finished. Buggy crap bothers me enough when it's in version 1.0. I can't imagine the bugginess in version 0.4.2.Build 192342 Nightly.
