Poll: Boring games

I don't know if anyone else thinks this, but is the world full of boring games?

They seem to be everywhere, ruining my standards. For instance, Oblivion... Praised by most, hated by me. Why? Boring combat (you can't even fireball someone's head off), the game is Numbers Meets Repitition: The Game.

There are no exciting moments of dismemberment, no hint of any real necromancy magic, the story is bland and everyone sounds the same and looks like putty. Plus, no matter how many times I punch a begger in the crotch, he doesn't fallover crying. Also, guards magicaly knowing where I am is annoying.

But these games annoy me mostly because I remember real fun... Duke Nukem 3D, Ark Fatalis, Max Payne, Neverwinter Nights, Metal Gear Solid 3, Fallout and The Orange Box. In the order in which I obtained them.

You see, I find myself sitting around playing games that aren't bad... but they don't make me think "Hey, this is like sex", either. Maybe because I've never had sex, maybe because the games aren't good, I don't know.
The point is, I want to know if other gamers feel like this; and if you're bold enough, if you could make the "ultimate" (the term is subjective) game, what would it be?

To get the bold people motivated, I've brought a wig along... woops, wrong bold.

My "ultimate" game would be Arx Fatalis's combat and spell system (headshots and all) meets Neverwinter Night's depth and Oblivion's map size and graphics, with some competent enemies, loads of spells, weapons and armour and no class system, just skills. Not to mention a powerful and awe inspiring story. Oh, and hitboxes. Crotch shot!

Heh, heh.

I haven't played games alot last time, but i think mumorpgers are the worst of the 'games' out there. They aren't even games, you just do something, being pimped with equipment and all, but in the end, it feels like you have to take 'this job'. Maybe it's the same like pokemon, but that game knows how to make it generally fun.

Maybe there should be some innovation in that scene, one that will involve alot more action and is fun for all of us. But i doubt we'll see that.

Also, the point of a game is amusement, but for me it doesn't seem there. It just seems only realistic stuff= good and that's that. Maybe they(developers of whatever game should think what fun is again.

Well, I like to mix it up a bit. Realism in a fantasy setting. Arx Fatalis, for example.

People died depending on where you hit them. E.g: If I fling a fireball at goblin's head, his head comes off. And judging by the speed at which I threw that bloody thing, that's about right for a realistic death.

Fantasy, meets hitboxes, meets huge selection of spells and weapons and a good story = Good game.

But I get the feeling I'm repeating myself now, oh well.

Only good mumpuncher I can see coming along is Age of Conan, yes it's got a little bit of a grind, but once you're done, it looks as if you'll actually get something in return for your time spent. PvP action, angry people and a castle... SCORE!

A good game for me is a game that I can play long without getting bored so that's why my favourite series are The Elder Scrolls, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Fallout. Mostly because they have a LOT of content, routine kills a game for me.

Most of the game nowadays completely go off the track (missing the point...) for me. Mostly because EA took over every damn company, they release their games way too early, so the story is short, the game is buggy etc. Then they make shitloads of expansions and expect you to buy them.

Think i haven't thought of my most favorite game.

That would be one that combines platforming puzzles and good action-based combat, where you actually have to use your head, unlike mario. admittedly, mario is more about that platforming thing.

Anyway, maybe it's because of the stupid epidemic, like yahtzee mentioned. which is unfortunate, and allthough everyone has specific tastes, it seems everyone lost the sight of the fun-man. Maybe mtoo, because i'm planning on saving up for pokemon. Or maybe i just like it.

yea, i wasn't impressed with oblivion after playing morrowind... it just seemed much more blah than the previous incarnations even though it looked prettier. Bioshock was fun because of the varied methods of destroying enemies but even that got a little old at the end when you realized you can literally just walk around with a wrench and whack people to death because it really doesn't matter how many times you die since you respawn everytime, the only deterrent on that was walking back to where you were.

Some games definitely miss the point of being fun, but I'm not sure about most. The problem is that different things are fun for different people. Some people enjoy MMOs, but I find them to be the most tedious examples of slog in the industry.

On the other hand a lot of people find the repetitive nature of fighting games to be extremely boring, but I love fighting games.

To actually describe my dream game I'd have to post a design document, but that would be a little long for the forum. I will say it would be a fantasy RPG with visceral combat, free running and roaming, a stealth system on par with the Thief games, a great story, and memorable NPCs.

Games will probably never be like sex..but that's ok - nothing really is.

Ultimate game? Hmm..some combo of Tetris and Doom. Like maybe every time a line clears, it explodes in a mess of gibs and a shotgun sound plays.

I miss the games of the late 90s and early 2000s. Freespaces, Fallouts, Baldur's gates (i didn't like icewind dale), system shocks, Homeworld (and cataclysm). Is it me, have my tastes changed? or were games better back then?

Allthough, maybe i'm a hypocrite >.>

Well.....I thought I was on topic. fine I;ll say something else :p.

I see what you're saying, the games these days are getting a boring but I think it only reaches out to one genre, Shooters. It's because most game companies these days are noticing that shooting games are getting the highest sale rates so they're all making shooting games. Only problem with that is all these companies that are making shooting games are using up the little amount of ideas to use. So its getting hard for the companies to come up with new ideas to make these games interesting. They're all becoming the same. Basically every shooting games these days have slow motion which gets boring after the 100th time. And there are alot of World War 2 games coming out which are all literally the same. I mean some shooting games are different like Resident Evil 4 with the first ever shoulder view or Shadowrun using all of these cool new power ups etc but basically most shooting games are becoming the exact same just different storylines.

Is that better?

Woah woah woah, did you just use the words "cool" and "Shadowrun" in the same sentence?

Fifty lashings for you.

I think games are getting boring and I lay the blame on the shoulders of the big, stupid publishing companies. I think Bioshock is a good example. The game had the potential to rock hard. I thought the first couple of levels are great, but then it just tapers off: less scripted encounters, no new mobs, environments start to look the same, etc. Don't even get me started with the ending. If you thought the ending was good, then I don't think we can be friends. It was just unspeakably bad, the boss fight was easy, the ending video short and nonsensical, what possible redeeming qualities does it have?

I think all that could have been avoided if the game wasn't rushed to market. It was simply not finished. I would bet you anything that the decision was made to release Bioshock before Halo 3 in order to boost initial sales. Games need to be released when they are done, not when the corporate overlords demand it.

signed to boringness.. I'm currently replaying old games. The fact I enjoy sim city classic now and then more then any next gen game speaks for itself.

I agree 100% bioshock is unfinished and hell even if it was the whole focus of it is wrong, quickly made cash in titles suck I am a FPS fan and all I see now a days are poorly deved gun and run clones with watered down RPG elements for good measure

TheKittenStrangler
I like slow mo some times all of jaurez dose it right, fear dose it so so it can be a generic gimmick along with just about anythign else tossed into poorly thought out FPSs.

PurpleRain
I swear I am having nightmares of a gay themed version of chocolate rain because of your name >>

anyway not played gears in full yet goign to soon tho,I think like some trying to be different shooters it gets some things right and some things wrong.
