Alright, the story so far....
The other night I happen to be over at my cousins house with him and his roommates. We ended up staying up until 2 o'clock in the morning playing modern warfare 2. We had a great time and it was a game that everyone enjoyed. The next morning, my cousin asked if he could burrow the game but I had to decline since I still play it often. I wondered why he hadn't bought it himself since him and his roommates enjoyed it so much, so I asked him why he hadn't already purchased it for himself. He told me that he was boycotting Activision and that he didn't want to buy the game if it was supporting them. It struck me as a bit odd since he enjoyed the game so much. I could understand boycotting bad video games but a whole company? I realize that some companies have a reputation for making bad games but would you refuse to buy a game from them if they did make a good game? I mean, video games are suppose to be for entertainment purposes, right? Is he thinking too hard about this or am I not thinking enough?

EA did not see a cent from me for almost 10 years, Atari no longer see a penny from me either.

I don't give a shit what games they make, until they clean up their act then I am going to protest in the only way that I can effectively... with my Wallet.

EA recently got lifted after there new take on DRM.

Ubisoft is on the shitlist for their current Online connect DRM Scheme.

Atari are on the list for their lack of standards, the Butchery of the D&D license their and poor customer support.

Creative Assembly are on their for shitting out the buggy and broken abomination that was Empire: Total War, then adding in all the fixes/missing features into Napoleon: Total War a year later using the exact same game engine only with bug fixes.

I only boycott paying full price for certain games, not necessarily by any company. For example, I didn't want to pay 30GBP for L4D2, so I waited until it dropped to around the 50% mark, which fortunately for me, it did, about 2 months after release.

Atari mostly. The last game I bought from them was one that they published.
Midway is another. Nothing but crap after crap.

THQ. They made/published 2 good titles on my primary system.

And last but not least...Rare. God...what happened to you? The last good game you made was Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise. Not even the remastered Perfect Dark will make me trust you.

I don't have any specific conflicts or boycotts in the gaming world but I do occasionally participate in a boycott in the world of cinema. For instance I was part of the Superhero Movie boycott to stop the Weinsteins from screwing with the final cut of Fanboys. It worked, I guess, but I found out later that the filmmakers really did need the help. That was arguably the most poorly edited movie that I have ever seen.

I really don't have any companies that I boycott. I do tend to veer away from Treyarch stuff until I've been able to demo a game. Generally, boycotting is ineffective. For every one person boycotting a company or product, there's one hundred who aren't. The same thing happened with the removal of dedicated server for MW2 (I think). People protested, signed (pretty much useless) online petitions and boycotted. Did that stop IW and Activision from raking in buttloads of dough? Nope.

i think it's a little hypocritical. If you're boycotting, then you really can't partake in the game AT ALL, not just not buy it.

Where is the sometimes option? If a company I dislike (Valve) releases a game I know I will like (Portal 2) I will get the game. However, Blizzard will never get a penny from me ever; no matter what game they release. It's not that I "boycott" companies, its just that I dislike some and like others, if that makes sense.

If by "boycott" you mean "torrent", then why yes, I do.

Though it takes some severe asshattery to push me to that point. The only even remotely new game I've been pissed enough to torrent is MW2.

The poll is a little bit loaded to me. I try to avoid boycotting specific companies, but instead specific games from that company if they're headed in a bad direction. ie,

DRM-Exploration Adventure? Boycott
New-Idea Warfare? Buy
Console-Portjob 2? Boycott
Listening to the Fans: Insert Subtitle? Buy

Well, that problem is solved now, isn't it?

Summoner: A Goddess Reborn is a recommendation from me, playable on your primary system as it is available for the GC.

Yeah, when Nintendo sold Rare to Microsoft I thought it was the worst decision they could possibly make. Now I know better.

The only game I've ever boycotted was LFD2: "Australian ed." I just think it's sad that Valve didn't stand-up for their game. Like how Sega did with AVP.

I don't mind people boycotting things but i don't do it.
I just don't like what some companies do.(looking at you EA)
Now i miss SSX the last game that had anything to do with sports i ever played until i find something as fun.

Also why would your cousin want the game if he doesn't like the company.
That;s the same as hating an artist and wanting to buy their music album.

I forgot about that game. My cousin still has my copy. Thanks

I gave Rare a second chance after the awful Xbox version of Conkers Bad Fur Day. I remember my older bro buying it and we went to the Multiplayer only to find out that you need Xbox Live in order to play it. And we didn't have it. Plus, they got rid of all the modes from the awesome N64 version. The game that made me stop supporting them was Perfect Dark Zero. Both Viva Pinatas were gifts so..yeah.

He wants to borrow the game because he's cheap. Don't let his reasoning fool you. Oh, wait; he didn't give any.
