I read what Splash Damage were doing with them, and it doesn't sound bad, probably just means that the good players will stand out. Doesn't mean you can't, just not everyone can do it.

Yes, because snipers turn every game into a camp-fest. Look at the crazy camping in TF2, where people only ever play snipers! Unless snipers are gimped to the point of absurdity, it is every gamers natural instinct to use them and camp, regardless of skill or usefulness. Not only is there never a good or useful sniper, they also kill children! Snipers can never help in taking objectives by clearing them of enemies or killing the guy running off with the flag, they just camp and kill the other team, which is always completely useless! Fuck variety!
1) Never once claimed that Snipers were useless, they do have their uses
2)Not sure if you really played TF2, but every class have strengths which are countered by weaknesses. The heavy has high hp, and a powerful weapon that requires little loading, but he's also a slow lumbering behemoth that gets hit by everything. Although snipers are great long range, they're incredibly fragile, whether at range or up close. TF2's level of load out customization is also severely limited in comparison to other games, including Brink. Your choices of close range weapons are essentially a knife, a jar of piss or a shitty machine pistol. Health also doesn't regenerate like it does in these "modern" shooters, making things even more difficult when someone is fighting back. Once you think you have a sniper on the ropes, it just resets and the cycle repeats.
TF2's maps are also limited as to where one can perch as a sniper making it easy for anyone to hunt you down and kill you as all paths are essentially connected; unlike Brink which pretty much allows you to jump, run and climb wherever you want.
The thing that TF2 and Brink share most in common is the use of classes and teamplay. Every class serves their purpose to complete objectives. Judging by what we've already seen with brink, Operatives will likely be the ones using sniper rifles, and since they're the only ones who can hack, deterring them from sitting back just to get kill after kill would be preferable. Not only that, but they can mark key targets for team mates while looking down their sights. If people playing operatives just sit around and shoot, rather than do hacking, being their unique ability, then very little will get done. Snipers in Brink wont be useless, they'll just have a different role than the snipers from previous games.
Also variety? Do you really believe that playing CoD any way you want really gives the game variety? General weapon similarities aside, once people start to learn what weapons and combinations are best, generally everyone else will do the same, not necessarily because it's what they like, but because it's the best. It's human nature to do what gives them the greatest gain for the least effort. Splash Damage are actually trying something new, while everyone is just trying to copy CoD and
they are limiting variety?

Keep in mind that since nobody has had a chance to play this game yet, everything is speculation. Snipers might turn out really good, or really bad then get fixed.
Too often have I entered a game where more than half of the players are snipers, killing people at massively long range before anyone can really do anything. This is especially the case with Homefront, which actually had a decent online component. What killed it was the fact that sniper rifles killed in one shot, letting those individuals sit at their spawn, or some incredibly high point, and kill the opposing team as they spawned. This is not fun, it may be fun for the snipers, but I'm pretty sure the developers want Brink to appeal to the largest audience possible.
If you don't like it, fine, don't play. Continue to play the games that take the safe route and attempt to copy CoD.
