Three words, Onix uses (softly weeps) bind. First gym in red, blue, yellow, is brutaful unless you have squirtle. But I stopped playing at those one's so maybe i'm totally wrong...

I was one of those guys who had my Squirtle, and tanked through everyone just with him. My other party members were pretty much HM Slaves, until I actually did serious collecting post-game. Id rather have had my Blastoise, who was like 10 or 15 levels higher than my enemies, just from being in every battle, then have to train a whole team over and over...So he's always gonna have a special place in my heart for that reason
I've seen a mlot of love for the elemental advantage against gym leader 1 and two with bulbusaur and leader 1 with squirtle But IMO Having an elementally weaker main forced me to develop my team more If I ever really get a powerhouse monster I put everything on him rest of my team be damned charmander made me a better player. that and early game his slash kicks ass and he turns into a mother loving FIRE BREATHING DRAGON and not a total pansy dragon like that cutesy stuffed toy dragonite
Squirtle! Its cute, badass and awesome. Charmander is none of them yet everyone loves him. Nobody cares about poor old Bulbasaur.
I chose Squirtle because he was the first pokemon I had as a kid. Partly because I had pokemon blue and his evolution was on the cover, but mostly because he was cute. Plus surf. But anyway, after seeing the results of the poll, I kinda wish I had chosen Bulbasaur. I didn't realise Bulbasaur wasn't liked.
Out of the original 3... I'd say Squirtle mostly because Blastoise has the best stats.
Out of all the starters... I'd say Cyndaquil. His 2nd form can learn thunderpunch making him super-effective against water-types, basically neutralizing a weakness, plus his Special Attack scales really well.

It's hard to pick one, but I feel a certain kinship with Bulbasaur. No real reason, I have nothing against Charmander or Squirtle.

I prefer Charmander. I was always able to easily mow through the elite 4 and the rival without selecting anyone else. Fire Blast and Slash had more than enough variation to deal with anything the game threw at you
