*I know this may seem like flame bait and if it turns out like that I would the mods to delete the thread.*

I have just had an argument with my friend that he says that being camp(if you don't know it's when a man acts feminine) is a choice. Now, I don't think it is a choice a lot of the time.

My friend strongly disagrees though and says everyone who is camp acts that way because they purposely act different than they normally do just to act camp and he claims it is weird and he is against it.

I'm just wondering the Escapists opinion on this, I am at a loss with him who I feel my friend is close minded on everything.

Sure. It's not a bad choice, either, what with personal hygiene and stuff.

When they start wearing make-up it's going a bit too far I think.

I think that sometimes it's a choice, but there's a guy I know who's been camp since he was 11, which seems to me that some people are just naturally camp. I also know someone who puts it on for whatever reason. That's why I say both.

And one that annoys me. Not due to any prejudice against gay people, but because people who talk with a forced lisp and call me 'sister' (yes, they exist) are just....annoying.
If they do it by choice I dislike them initially. It's annoying that people put on a persona like that instead of a totally badass one.

It can be both? Some people may choose so for their own reasons, and some people are 'girls trapped in guys' bodies.'

You're both right?

I'm a bit confused. Is being camp like being metrosexual? Or stepping over the boundries and starting to go towards transvestite?

I can be considered a camp (never heard that term before) and its just the way I am.

I don't want to be the big tough alpha male and I like being a bit more feminine.

Lol, I actually thought this would be about camping.
Silly me.
Actually, I really don't care one way or another as long as they don't bother me.
When they do, I rip out their hearts and send their souls screaming to hell.

What, that was all I could make up in 12 seconds.

not a choice.

my nephew grew up with his gay dad (my uncle) and now he acts ''camp'' as you call it.

and my nephew is either straight or not out of the closet yet.

If a guy ever acts more like a girl than me, I can bet hes not going to get a girlfriend real quick, but theres nothing wrong in they're choice.
It would be wrong to tell them they're "wrong," just like any of thouse other debates about politics, religion, gay marriage, ect.

This isn't really a bit feminine, think of Jack from Will & Grace and that's camp.

Read my above comparison.

That's understandable, it works backwards too, if a girl acts more like a guy than I do.

Yeah he's straight.
Are you sure? Never in my life have I met someone who acted in the manner which you speak who was not gay. I mean I know some people who are a bit more put together than others but none who act overtly feminine.

Yes, I believe it is a choice. However, this doesn't mean you consciously decide to act camp.

My example: my old college was vast-majority girls. In fact, I was the only guy in my friendship-group for a long period of time there and, as we naturally do, I picked up on some of the traits of my friends. I began to gesture with my hands excessively and use rather feminine expressions, thus I became somewhat camp. When I realised this, however, I stopped myself doing it because I realised it was giving a lot of people the false impression that I was gay.

So, it's a decision, it's just a case of whether people are willing to kick a habit. Similar to your default tone of voice; you have one you're comfortable with, but if you decided to talk in a huskier voice it would eventually become natural.
