ummm no he can't otherwise how would he differentiate himself from any other reviewer? Yahtzee isn't just rating games anymore, he's creating a brand. And his brand is about funny reviews and ripping games a new asshole. So okay yes he could write a Positive review I guess, but he won't since it would be a bad... career move. If you know what I mean.

Well, Portal. Apparantly he thought it was flawless. He even said he couldn't think of a criticism for it.
He liked Call of Duty 4 and Saints Row 2 also.
Sometimes it's more about being funny than informative.
Exactly, this is why I cannot take him entirely seriously. I honestly think that people with very informative reviews on this forum hold more weight than Yahtzee but then they are reviewing and he is critiquing, so I guess I have a problem with critics in general.

Either way he has never affected a sale from me.

Thank you for bringing these forums another ZP thread. God knows, this forum is starved for them. I am so glad you're working to solve that problem, you know, because we all love him thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much.

As for the topic, he gave a positive review for the orange box, he gave GTA IV a good review, he gave Saints Row 2 a good review... I'm sure there are others but I'm not re-watching every ZP ever to figure it out.

Croshaw plays a character, you have to apply that measure to it, and

Zero Punctuation is about comedy more than actual reviewing. Yahtzee's trying to be funny, first and foremost -- the reviewing is just the format. It's kinda like asking why Jon Stewart isn't a legitimate news anchor, y'know?
I wholly disagree with that. ZP offers some very concrete and sophisticated insights into game design and trends. Sometimes he reaches for the humour, but his observations are always valid and true and, at worse, it turns a two minute review into a five minute one.

He can write a positive review. For instance, he descibed portal as 'Sublime' and then went on to say 'and if I say this about any other game ever, I will jam forks in my eyes'. So maybe that was his perfect game. Maybe I think about this too much. Either way, yes, he can.
Yeah, I noticed in his Prince of Persia: Sand of Time review he said it was "on the road to Portal Perfection". I think that was the rare holy-grail game.

Be interesting to see how the sequel holds up.

On the OP: I think you are confusing finding fault with a bad review. That is a fairly unsophisticated perspective. It is only one step removed from saying that ZP aren't real reviews because he doesn't give number ratings.

ZP: two stars up!

he was rather positive to fallout 3 and saints row 2 both of said reviews i agree on quite a bit, but the problem is, is that the dude seems pressured to hate as much as possible on a game and that leads to bad reviews

Depends on you're definition of "Good Review". It is physically possible for him to like something ( I don't think there's a law against it).

He just has a better eye for things that are missing or badly done, as apposed to What is there.

Besides; What use is a cynic that likes something?

He will be optimistic but will never talk about how great it is the whole time. Plus if he was nice the whole time would it be as funny? I think not.

He already made 4 positive reviews.

Portal, Saints row 2, No more Heroes and Psychonauts.
Of course he points out everything that is flawed, except in Portal because it has no flaws (honest this game is perfect), but that is his job to say what so called 'reviewers' won't say because he is payed to slaughter games like reviewers are paid to make positive reviews.

And it's fun, he can do positive reviews but it is much more fun to see a bad game slaughtered than a good game praised, because we all know a good game is good, what the catch is that there are tons of fan boys who can't see the flaws in their beloved series and that makes for hilarious flaming and seeing as most reviewers are fan boys I generally only trust my own opinion and sometimes take pointers from Yahtzee.

Yahtzee has become more of a comedian than a reviewer, and like all comedians he has a specific style. He insults things. Yes, he's a reviewer, and that means he should point out the bad parts, but he does them almost to the exclusion of everything else.
A comedian whos humour has become extremely stale in the past 4 or 5 months.

He's done plenty of positive reviews. He just has the balls to point out the flaws with a game, even ones he really likes.

I honestly don't know. I was under the impression that if a perfect game should exist, Yahtzee's sheer presence would bend the fabric of reality to insert a small yet exploitable error in the game, if not make the whole thing horrible.

Wait, does this mean the Sonic franchise would be good if someone killed Yahtzee...?

Yahtzee is a critic his job is to point out everything wrong with a game.

You forgot the option "HELL NO!."

Even he said that nobody likes him when he's being positive and the point of his review is to entertain people, not make them want to leave. He can't write a good review because then he wouldn't be doing his job.

Of course he can! He has! I could name several, but my reason for joining this site was because of the Fallout 3 review. C'mon, folks. It was as close to Branston's Pickles as he's ever got! Maybe no special chunks in HIS eyes, but I liked the game and he seemed to enjoy it himself.

Let me clarify something here, though.

Yahtzee will always put a game through the wringer, regardless of how good it was, or how squeeky-clean the company that made it is. It just happens, and it's funny as hell. Any review that he speaks of being delighted by it without a dreadful BUT followed by a diatribe of suckiness can probably be described as good, and he had those. You're not gonna find him sucking on the tits of wobbly optimism because of a game.
